Just saw on examinations.ie that the marking schemes will be up from the 27th of August.

I'm so happy, I could develop a new neurosis and spend the rest of my days vividly imagining my exam scripts while reading the schemes to see how I should have been graded....

Gee, you're too nice. But seriously though, I thought my paper 1 was a load of bollox on the day. Paper 2 did go better, but this summer when I was doing estimates on my points and stuff, I always assumed that I was getting an A2 in it.

    Emailed Examanations.ie, got this reply.
We expect to have the Marking schemes online by tomorrow. They will be uploaded, at the very latest, by Thursday to make them available for the viewing of the scripts (Friday, Saturday).

    ;)

English will be out in a second, crucial for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,195 ✭✭✭Corruptedmorals

    Come on English..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

If it is the essay which screwed me over in my English i will be drawing to this point.
Candidates may refer formally to the text to which the composition is linked or they
may complete the composition assignment with reference to their own store of
    knowledge/reference/experience

thus this heading can clearly be interpreted in whichever way i interpret it.
Write a magazine article (serious or light-hearted) entitled: “The Modern Shopping
    Centre”.
Reward a clearly established and sustained register. A personal or impersonal approach is
    acceptable.

I am angered that i got a D2 in my English, after reading this marking scheme and looking back at my paper from memory i would have expected a C2 at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭Aoibheann

It's really weird looking at all the marking schemes.. I can barely remember answering any of the papers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭ZorbaTehZ

Pretty much everything is up now, except for a few specific levels like in Business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,195 ✭✭✭Corruptedmorals

I think I know what swung me the A1 in English.

Short story- candiates may refer to the image(s) only implicitly.

Unseen poetry- Is basically a reading test. Do not expect lengthy answers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭D. Coughlan

Oh, i really regret looking at the Geog Higher marking scheme. On Q11 C, I described two urban problems in huge detail and thought I would get close to 80 in that question. Now, i look at the marking scheme and you needed to discuss one problem and one opportunity. It was in the question all right, not very clearly thought, I just saw problems and rambled on with what I had learned. it says I can only get 5 SRP's max. Fcuk it, it probaly cost me a grade and five points, and i missed my course by 10, fcuk, fcuk can't do anything about it now though. now i know how i only got a B3.

PS would they ever just put up higher Business

Ah, I actually did a lot better in App Maths than I thought, having looked at that marking scheme. My A2 was justified it seems. Question 2 let me down. I think I was fairly close to getting 1(b)(ii) - I thought I was miles off.

Papers will be interesting to see on Saturday..

EDIT: Ha! Physics Q3 - what was all that bs about having to have the line cutting the X and Y axises about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭ZorbaTehZ

I thought that they were extremely fair with Physics tbh, if you look at the graph on question 3 and 4 they accepted a lot of things that I thought they wouldn't, and look at that question that everyone was kicking a fuss up about on question 2 where they did the same. Another question they were very fair on was the Charges question (think it was Q7?).

Tech Drawing - PII question 1 didn't get heavily adjusted as I thought. The roads question, they were very fair with too.

Haven't really looked at any others yet except maths, which was ok I thought.

It's that 1/f = the point where it cuts the axis.

Yup, but the marking scheme says you can jst get the average value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭carlowboy

Yeah, probably because the SEC only checked the syllabus after sending out the exam!

There are usually alternate answers which are quite acceptable.

    I'll set the first question:

Find the value of the square root of 2 using a MacLaurin series.

yea, pretty nerdy, believe it or not, i know the answer to 9 decimal places off by heart, but no way of proving it here

(I'm putting my money on sd123 mwahaha )

is that my reward for saying that YOU were the best at maths:) :)

off i go to try to remember how to do maclaurin seres. answer to come soon hopefully:rolleyes:

Ok, if anyone remotely cares, i went as far as (x^12)/12! and got 1.420916804.

    v--2 = 1.414213562 on a calculator

No, not accurate enough I'm afraid.

(lol, the only reason I asked that was because root2 is something like 150 digits long :p )

It's irrational, it goes on forever

*Cough* Root 2 is irrational so it cannot be written down*cough*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

hmmm... where did I hear it was 150 digits then?

    meh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭genericgoon

I assume they were looking for an approximate value in the question.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,597 ✭✭✭dan719

You can prove that it's irrational using the method of infinite descent.(a particular case of proof by contradiction)
Assume root two can be written as a fraction
    E.g p/q
But this must be divisible by two (because p/q all to be squared is equal to two)
Therefore root two is equal to p/2x and this can be repeated ad infinitum. But we cannot simplify fractions for ever- therefore this is a contradiction, therefore root two can't be written as a fraction and is irrational.
p.S I don't know if it was Fermat who proved the irrationality of root two but it was he who turned the method of infinite descent into such a powerful tool.
