Trying to Get Fit

    Hi all,

I recently joined Northwood gym and have been a couple of times but I dont really know what I should be doing to get the maximum out of my sessions. My aims are to get fit and to tone up - if I lose a few lbs in the process I'll be more than happy. Some stats:

    Age: 27
    Weight: 9 stone
    Height: 5"2
    Lifestyle: Sedentary

So far I've been doing the following:

20 mins on bike at difficulty 5
40 mins on treadmill on 6% incline between 4.5 and 7 kph
5 mins on croass-trainer ( i think this is an ancient torture device!)

I burn approx 300 kcals during this timeframe.

I know I'm not doing any weights but I dont know where to start and I'm a bit intimidated by all the equipment.

So my questions for you guys - what should I be changing/introducing to my work out to get the maximum benefit. This is pretty much all the exercise I get as I sit at a desk all day at least 5 days a week.

Also, my diet is pretty good - I dont really snack on crisps and things although I am partial to a bit of chocolate. Does anyone have a sample days menu as to what I should be eating to keep my body in shape?

This joining the gym has been prompted by me putting on just over half a stone in the last six months. For the previous 4 - 5 years I maintained a steady 8.5 stone weight. My lifestyle hasnt changed in the last six months but the weight is creeping up and I know have a bit of a belly which I'd like to banish before it becomes a lot of a belly!

    Thanks in advance,

    Nicki

Oh all I can say is welcome to your late 20s when everything you put in your mouth shows up somewhere on you....

Think some of us women are genetically pre-disposed to this.....

Not a very encouraging comment there...

Nicki - have you talked to any of the trainers at the gym? One of them should be more than happy to spent 30 to 40 mins with you to show you the basics with weights.

agreed. although I am not the biggest fan of the instructors up there they should be at least able to start you in the right direction.

If for what ever reason you don't want to do this I train up there as well so I could probably go through some of the basics with you aswell, however it would be a proper weights workout something similar to this http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055142394 as oppsoe to something centered around what most women think they should lift
