    :) Hi guys,

well this is my 1st post here so hope im posting in the proper place.

Im seriously overweight. About a year ago i wasnt as bad, i was loosing weight myself and had nearly 2stone of.I went on holiday and just stopped when I got home here. I've just really let myself go over the past year, just been lazy, eating crap etc. It's even got to the stage where I actually feel depressed, hate going ouside for fear of what the neighbours are thinking of me etc etc.

Ok i know some of ye are thinking now im a nut but im not i just cant help feeling this way. Im quite young. Live with my child(2yo) and fiance who is very supportive in anything i do, but will always say oh u look lovely,un not fat etc etc BUT I KNOW I AM.

Im thinking about joining unislim/ww or something similar, and just wondering if anyone here goes 2either? If so which is better?

I dont want to be like this anymore, i dont want to be the fat mummy leaving my daughter at school.

Im posting this here as I have tryed to speak to himself about this but I just start bawling and i forget about it. He is by no mean's overweight and sometimes i just font think he gets how i feel iykwim!!

    sorry about the long/rant post.

    thanks,fluffytulip. :)

can't tell you anything about ww or unislim (never heard of it, but assume it is similar) but from what I've seen there are better (read healthier) ways to lose weight/get in shape.

You mentioned that you were already moving towards your goals before your holidays so (as long as you were not starving yourself or eating special k and soup all day) you know how to do it. From a health/nutrition point of view I have little respect for ww, if you eat right (read the stickies) and get some exercise in you will lose weight in a healthy fashion.

but, for what it's worth, ww (and I suppose unislim) can give people a form of support that some people need (and you sound like that is something that you would like if your fiance is not supportive - not raggin' on him btw, he is probably perfectly happy with how you look, either way you're better off doing this for yourself anyway).

    Best of luck!

    Hi Fluffytulip

I think WW would be perfect for you. It's a great support system and a very easy to understand programme. You sound like your in turmoil at the moments so don't delay get to a meeting asap and you will feel better about yourself immediately! It can also help motivate you if you buy some slimming magazines and see how much others have lost and how much healthier and active they are. Low fat cookbooks are great as the hardest thing is the monotony some people fall into when trying to lose weight. Try to walk at least 3 times a week for now.
A really good book to read for motivation is by AJ Rochester it's called The Lazy Girls Guide.....
    I wish you luck!

Problem with WW is the they focus on calorie counting and ignore healthy eating habits.

That's if you attempt to do it on your own. The support given in the group sessions includes advice on proper eating habits. Any literature also focusses strongly on a mixed diet, warning against just eating the same things every day.

The big problem people have in WW and unislim is that they go a few times, think they have the system down, and then go off and attempt to continue it on their own. So they end up doing pure calorie counting, then feeling crap eventually, and they "fall off the wagon".

For the OP, you'll probably find it much tougher without the support of those around you. Unless your fiancé is an olympic athlete, he probably wouldn't mind losing a few pounds himself. You don't have to convince him to go to WW/Unislim with you, but if you can convince him to eat healthier along with you, then it makes the process easier for you - you don't have to make separate meals for yourself, and you don't have to "avoid" the biscuits in the press - you just don't buy the biscuits in the first place.

    Agreed -

I lost 21 lbs on WW about 3 years ago but by the end of it I had no energy, was always tired, my skin was in bits and the second i stopped counting points I was putting weight back on like no one's business.

(as well as being broke! €9 a week is very expensive for getting someone to weigh you, you could join a gym for that amount or spend the money buying healthy food!!!)

Although now they have a new plan - there's no counting and you are only allowed to eat fresh and unprocessed foods. So no Tropicana - it can only be fresh squeezed juice etc That's pretty healthy but I think there's a happy medium to be found.

    Hope this helps :p

    Simply not true...

The problem with both is that they follow a 'diet' mentality i.e. keep getting people to think about what they have to give up, how many points foods contain etc

Yes it works wonders for sooooo many people but all in all the info here is a million times better and will produce quicker results, period

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replys. I have looked on the unislim & ww websites and think I will join one of them next week. I know its expensive but otherwise I wouldn't bother trying to loose any weight during the week.

Like if I knew I had to loose it I'd stand a better chance.!!

Food is my major problem..easy saying just stop eating my problem is I dont know when to stop. I could eat for all of ireland!

Heres a typical day, no breakfast ever. Lunch Usually ham, cheese, sandwich with packet of crisps and glass a coke.

dinner, potatos, veg and sum kind of meet chicken/beef etc. Have two takeaway at the weekend fri/sat nyt. sunday usually in mums for dinner so is big roast.

Then its the evenings it gets worse i just munch on s**** while watching tv all evening. crisps chocolate, If i opened a tin of pringles i could eat half the packet.

This time last yr i could walk for over a hour at a fast pace and now i get out of breath running up the stairs.

dubsgirl i will get that book at the weekend. orlee i dont think i have the confidence to join a gym actually ive never even step foot inside a gym. I have a treadmill at home Hasnt been used in 2yrs.

Thanks again for the replys everyone

That's just not right. There is now a separate program in WW called Core which focuses on foods that you are allowed to eat. There's a big list including all vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs and rice/pasta/potatoes. You have 21 points for the week to spend on other stuff: bread, butter, cheese, biscuits, alcohol. You only need to count the points from the higher fat stuff. You eat 3 regular meals until you are full every day and you're allowed unlimited snacks of fruit or veg. It works very well and really encourages eating freshly cooked food. I lost 3 stone 2 years ago doing this program.

I know one of the leaders of WW and she's very passionate about it, and I've spoken to her at length about how she conducts classes.

I can see the benefits, particularly for those who need a support group, so I would advise you to start it. If you don't like it, what have you lost. You're still where you started.

You also need to look at the other side of the equation, energy expenditure. For this it's best to start an exercise program.

www.crossfit.ie is what I do (the site went up this morning, by this evening I'll have information on it!)

Whatever you do, start something. Once you get into a sustainable diet/exercise regime you can always continually tweak or improve it. Just don't wait to find the perfect thing to start with. Even today, walk up and down the stairs ten times, or pick your two year old up from the ground a couple of extra times. Eat one more piece of fruit or a few less spuds.

The little things, done consistently will help.

If you've any questions, feel free post here or mail me info at crossfit dot ie
