Starting a new job-questions

I was not sure if this was more suited to the job section, but it's trivial so perhaps it should go here.

Wel I'm starting work tommorow, but I have a problem what the hell can I talk to my co-workers about? It's a small shop, so I will probably be working with one or two others. God do I hate conversing with people who don't share a common interest.

Please give me some tips of what to do. I'm not the type for idol chat.

Glance at news.google.ie or RTE.ie .. if it's not your thing, then don't try to be something you're not... *sigh*

I knew someone would bring that up. I remember I brought it up in my first year in secondary school, retards didnt have a clue what I was taking about. I think people hated me from that day. It was in relgion class, you know where you talk about everything other than relgion.

I knew someone would bring that up.

Well I'm sure he was just the quickest to react because that was exactly what I (and I'd guess at least a dozen others) was going to say. Seriously, don't mention him.

:D I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you don't believe that.

Depending on how small a shop it is, if you want to converse with your co-workers you may want to bring along this :D

Wear your "Down with Gun Control" t-shirt, and lobby for terrorists to be called freedom fighters. Discuss the latest mass murder and how the guy was "misunderstood".

    You'll get on grand.

OP, don't bother talking about anything! I freelance in radio so I'm regularly in offices with new people (who I will definitely see again by the way) and I just put my head down and do my work. If they think I'm stuck up - tough sh*t. It's a lot easier than forcing myself to be all chatty. After a short while, the conversation starts to flow and I always get on great. Just be natural - screw what they think of you. I guarantee they will think highly of you then.

You'll be asking us what to have for breakfast next.

Just find out whatever your workmates are interested in and if they somewhat align with your interests you can start a light conversation.

Don't take too big a stance one way or another at first. You don't want to scare them off before they get to see the soft friendly side of you. well maybe you do, i dunno :p

I guess by the time you read this you'll already have had your first day. Hope it went well for you.

this is how I feel when I go to the hairdressers

    2 hours of awkward silences

so I bring my mother and I find 3 people chatting takes a lot of the pressure off

try including the customer in it maybe?
or just ask general questions about the place until you strike up a convo

Talk about the underpants gnomes. Its a subject that concerns us all, and few are brave enough to broach the subject.

QFT! My advice would be to keep this odd obsession to yourself. ;)

He returns..... The job went good, I sware the Indian people own. The manager is a no personality worthless hack but he pays me, so as the kids say..it's all good. I verbally attacked a 16 year old scumbag for attempting to buy drink, which was the moment of the day.

He started a thread in the military forum about joining the army, maybe he's off to the curragh camp and has no internet access.

    Hey --nice start Dude.

I predict a long and happy career for you in that august establishment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

So do I Flutter, so do I. I hope the manager either goes or dies, if he was gone, then it would be great. His first words were 'ill give you 3 days and if your not able at the end, then I will have to look elsewhere' My reply was 'na, il be fine-in a heartless and stubborn voice.
