Chickpea confusion etc....

Been reading some of Berardi's stuff and am confused by two things he says:

    1. "Don't bother counting calories." Eh? I know most people here do and advocate it as a first step to getting in shape.

    2. "Chickpeas are a low-carb food suitable for outside of the workout window" (i.e. the 2-3 hour window after a workout). I always thought chickpeas were high in carbs, even if the protein content is good? I like the little beggars as well...

Is Berardi wrong on both counts?

I don't count calories religiously. I periodically figure out what my needs are and adjust my food habits from there. After putting in the initial effort to find out how many calories all my favourite meals are I just do mental calculations - I try and get roughly 350 cals at each of my 6 meals a day.

cavanmaniac, I'd like to introduce you to Google and fitday.com... ;)

Chickpeas: 17g carbs and 120 cals per 100g, GI of 33. Kock yourself out with them anytime of the day. Personally I consider them medium carb and would eat them instead of bread with salad.

I did the google thing, got something like 27% carb on thecaloriecounter.com?

I probably just mucked it up...

don't stress about it, honestly. Chickpeas are great yokes altogether. Also called garbanzo beans, they're high in molybdenum (needed to make an important digestive enzyme), manganese and folate (help to lower cholesterol), tryptophan, protein and fibre so they'll help stabilise your blood sugars after eating them. Eat in moderation and enjoy ;)

There's no point counting calories if you're still eating crap is what I think he was gettting at.

Chickpeas are everywhere - salad bars up and down the country are stuffed with them, people get them in their sandwiches/rolls  They are the main ingredient of hummus - which is their true purpose.

My father in law (an Iranian) treats them in the same way my grandparents treat spuds, if you don't eat huge quantities, multiple times a day, seven days a week, theres something wrong with you!

Be careful looking at values on tinned foods, and dried, chickpeas come mainly dried and tinned. Some nutritional info is for drained weight, some for dry, some cooked, some includes the water. So dried chickpeas could appear to have far more calories than ones measured including the water.

Onion bhajis are made with chickpea flour/gram flour, I used to make low fat verions, onions chopped and mixed into a gram pancake and put on a nonstick pan.

Does he recommend any forms of portion control? weighing is just another form of "calorie counting"- it is just all about portion control which is very important.
