    Hey all

Thinking of kitting out the place with some gym equipment. I found a place in Waterford http://www.hfhomefitnesscentre.com and they seem to have the best selection (of Irish stores online anyway). Has anyone had any dealings with these guys? Or recommend anyone else?

Looking for a treadmill, an elliptical and a stair climber - I cannot find these anywhere!!!! The only stair climbers I've seen are in the UK and I'd prefer to try it out myself. Anybody any idea where I can get one? Budget's about €2,500 to €3,000 for the three (if possible) ... I'd use the elliptical and stair climber more than the treadmill so am willing to cut back a bit on that.

    Thanks :)

iNothing for upper body? Stepper is useless as far as im concerned and elliptical trainer can do what it does. I'd get a rowing machine as well as elliptical and threamill but try running outdoors if you have green area nearby.

    Good equipment is expensive.

    Try these

what exactly do you think having all those different types of cardio machines is going to do that just one wouldn't?

Well my other half tends to use the treadmill and I tend to use the elliptical which is why I'd get both ... I'm not really pushed on treadmill, he's not pushed on elliptical!

As for the stairclimber, I found that to be quite good in the gym I go to as well as the elliptical so ...

Regarding getting equipment for the upper body, he's gonna be getting all that stuff, I'm just taking care of the cardio side of things :)

Save yourself some money and dont bother with any of that junk.
After the first month im sure they'll all be gethering dust in the garage.

Its next to impossible to stay motivated on a treadmill looking at the same 4 walls. Treadmills are boring at the best of times in a gym when there are things about to distract you slightly but in the same room every day?
Thats no reflection on you or anything. Its just what ive found and a lot of friends i know.

Just get a good pair of runners and go for a run outside. Its much better for you than being pulled along by a treadmill.

Then buy or make a medicine ball, get some DumBells from argos with a good selection of plates, use a stool instead of a stairs climber, buy the chinup bar in argos

Do lunges, bulgarians, pistols, step ups, some of those pilates exercises like birddogs &fire hydrants (i think they're called that) for legs

Do standing DB press, curls, tricep kickback, dips, shrugs, 1 arm row, DB snatch, floor press for upper, chinups (palms in and out)

Do Med ball throws, leg raises, situps etc for core.

Dont be fooled into the idea that spending lots of money will help you get fit or more toned. That part is all up to you and your motivation. If you really want it then you will make do with what you have. a lot of times these expensive machines can be obstacles.

You can get very strong, toned/muscular (whatever you want to call it), and lean by just doing the above and watching your diet and it wont cost you more than €100

i was in the exact same boat as you when i was about to start training a few years ago. I had an excuse though to not train and it mainly was - "I'll start training seriously when i buy x,y or z". Eventually when i did buy whatever it was, i made up other excuses and eventually i didnt train at all and went back into my old lazy ways.

It took me a while to realise that i had to motivate myself, and that was the most important thing. You can train and get fit to a very high level with virtually no equipment if you want it enough

    Good luck anyway.

btw. mickk here on the site sells equipment afaik from dublin. maybe give him a pm?

Yes, 3,000 is a huge amount for what it will allow you to do. If you insist then just get one to start out with. My entire weights cost about €200-250, decent bike (10miles a day) was 600, runners 130.

Under 1000 for equipment that gives a decent overall workout, and good quality equipment too. I cycle to work so the whole lot paid for itself in money saved on the bus/car in about 1 year.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the helpful replies :)

I realise now that I was a bit of an idiot thinking I could even afford all that in one go! So I will just stick with the one thing for now (elliptical or the bike), unless the other half wants to get himself a rower, he can buy that then.

About being bored, am never bored at the gym as they all have tvs in front of cardio eq so at least your brain is somewhat occupied while working out - this would be the plan for the room where we have the gym equipment, have a tv and a few mirrors n such :)
