    Hi,

My girlfriend is thinking of getting a personal trainer as she is not really the gym type and needs to be motivated.

Can anyone provide some basic info on personal trainers.
How much do they cost? How many sessions per week are required etc?

She was looking at these two in particular

All advice and input is greatly appreciated!

Generally 50-60 euro an hour and i would say at least 2 times a week-check if there up to standard as there is some poor personal trainers out there-like any profession i suppose! diet is the key so make sure the trainer has knowledge in this.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

if the gym isn't her thing why doesn't she try something else

It's not so much a gym thing. It's more a personal motivation thing.

I have a weird theory on this but here me out - as a Personal Trainer I don't actually consider it part of my job description to motivate someone. Fundamentally if they aren't motivated in the first place then I won't waste my time dragging them kicking and screaming through a workout, when there are hundreds of highly motivated people who want results but need advice, direction and someone with the knowledge to guide them through it. That's the way I look at it.

If she isn't already motivated to get in great shape just for the health benefits, eg reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, osteoperosis etc, or even sheer vanity then there is nothing I can say or do to motivate that person - they won't enjoy it, they won't work hard and ultimately they will quit.

I'd say she is better off enjoying her life the way she wants to. Sure she may pile on a few pounds, and her health may decrease but when that switch goes off in her head that tells her she doens't like living like that any more - she'll do anything to make those changes, then she'll be ready to get into the gym and training personal trainer or not. As it stands now I'd say it's a waste of the trainers time and her money.

Hi Boru. Thanks for the input and I can see where you're coming from with that.
I think however in this case the switch has gone off in her head!
She is shy and I think its partly the fear of the gym - the public space etc thats putting her off.

I would envisage that a personal trainer is the path to confidence and in turn the gym! (if that makes any sense)

which is why I suggested that she should try something else. The gym isn't the only place where one can lose weight. She could try dance classes. swimming, cycling, that boot camp thing in bushy park, basketball, tennis, walking, climbing etc etc etc

There is a whole world of things that people can do to lose weight, but as already said diet is probably the easiest and then use some activity that you enjoy to help the weight loss
