Best 'last resort' meals

A slightly erratic work schedule of late has caused me to ponder the following:

Say you're away from home and because of short notice haven't had time to prepare a meal to keep with the six meals a day/healthy nutrition plan you normally follow.

In an 'emergency' what do you resort to eating that keeps you closest to eating healthy, i.e. what do you pick up on the run from a corner shop that ticks as many boxes as possible, keeps the engine ticking over and stops you worrying that you're missing vital meals?

I generally opt for nuts - I'm like a frickin' squirrel with all I have in my bag - or fruit. Wouldn't mind knowing a few other options...

i dont know how healthy it is really but my one is the freshways chicken and pasta salad. 3euro cold pasta with chicken peppers onions and olive(i think) oil they go out of date in a week so i assume there is not much preservatives and crap in them.

I'd be avoiding the pasta unless I'm after working out earlier in the day, but another one I've just thought of is the chickpea and roasted pepper (3.65) option in Nude outlets. Tasty enough and out of date within a day so hopefully not full of bad stuff...

Litre of milk, half a brown slice pan and a 140 gram tin of tuna in sun flower oil

    Drink milk
4 slices of wholemeal brown bread
Tuna drained and halved into each sandwich

of course this assumes you have somewhere to make the sandwiches

It also assumes you have no tastebuds!

Don't they sell Tuna with tomato dressing in foil packages now?

It's also a bit carby depending on the time of day and when you have worked out. This is part of the reason why I posted the thread...often in a hurry all you can ever get is a sandwich or wrap etc. but if trying to avoid carbs it leaves you short on options. Ready made salads without the nasty dressings I guess is another option...

If I am pissed in town and about to go for a kebab I will get a pack of chicken breast in a late night centra, or sometimes I have gotten an unbreaded chicken burger in mcdonalds or burgerking, throw away the bun if you are really particular.
I am very surprised at the lack of wholemeal buns or pizzas in takeaways & supermarkets. You can get wholemeal baps no problem but not burger buns, the baps are nicer anyways. Many "brown" breads are not wholemeal at all, or only have some wholemeal in them.

Some spars/centras etc have chicken fillet bits or slices in the salad bar. Some only charge by the container, or by weight at only €11-13 per kg, this is way cheaper than most supermarkets. They have it at a low price expecting you to fill up on coleslaw and crappy cold pasta.

Utter last resort cheap meal- tin of cold beans!

I think this is my biggest downfall, when I don't have time to prepare my lunch for work, the choice in the shop sucks and then that guy calls by at breakfast time with his van full of chicken fillet rolls, breakfast rolls, b*stard.

Actually no, my biggest downfall is beer, anyone know a healthy way to get pissed? :D

Could you make it the night before? I put the makings of a sambo in my lunchbox and lash it together at lunch so it doesn't go soggy.
I keep the bread in the freezer so I just take it straight out and into the box.
It's defrosted in an hour or two.
