Broadband Providers Poll [Aug-Nov 07]

Alright, it's been more than taking the piss but I've finally got around to doing this. The old poll from September - December 2006 is here for those interested in it.

As always:

Only vote for providers you have current personal experience of using, so it gives as fair a snapshot as is possible of the current state of services.

There's a bunch of new providers in this poll, but if I've missed any post a reply mentioning them and I'll add them to the bottom of the list.

Sorted now. I've added one or two more providers to the list comapred to the previous one I put up last night. Unfortunately vbulletin doesn't handle editing polls very well, so a new one was required with each new addition of providers.

This should be the final one unless I've missed anyone blindingly obvious (which I don't think I have )

I had to say no ... to NTL ... as their service has been up and down since before christmas .. before that I was very happy with the service ...

I said yes to IBB in Maynooth and no to 3 in County Offaly (Mucklagh side of Tullamore).

I'm actually surprised so far that BT are doing so well, considering the many complaints here about their billing, though I suppose many threads relate to problems, as opposed to how great service is.

Voted yes to Eircom. Haven't had a problem with them in the 2 or so years we've been using them.

Net1 got my unhappy vote I'm afraid. Im on 2Mb Broadband and get an average Download speed of a whopping 10kbps.

They ignor all emails and calls asking them why my service is so bad.

My vote went to Nova networks in Cork. When I speed test usually get 2megs up and down. Contention is usually not a problem, blueface work great, no down load cap, and helpful if you have a problem. They are relativity small compared to larger players but I am happier with their service. With all wireless providers you can get interference or other problems but have found nova will always do there best to sort you out.:D

Never had a problem with Irish Broadband in Cork 24/7 internet access for 20 quid how bad.

Amocom in Co. Cork gets my happy vote :-). In eight months about 1 hour of downtime and consistantly higher d/l (by approx. 50 %) speeds than the 1 down/1/2 up advertised.

before we actually got broadband i would have been skeptical about eircom, but i've had it for months and i've only noticed it being down about twice in the last 3 months.

Currently with BT 2MB, paying 30 a month, service is grand had a few small speed issues but all fine now again,

Thinking of moving to UTV 3mb as you can get a static IP address for 3.50 I persume this is a once off payment

Has anyone got UTV internet ?? if so are you happy with it, whats the service like

How long was it down, as it was off once for 5-6hr, but found out that a digger had cut thru cable about 50k away, its been down 3times in the past 2-3mths & some dont connect straight-away

Hopefully none too soon to come yet!

I had all the IBB services. I found the Breeze brilliant and they don't shape traffic or block ports.

So my advice to anyone in the carlow area to avoid Digiweb metro!!! This is an ongoing problem which I cannot get sorted. They say that it's "contention", First it was my wireless connection. Then I had to plug in to the modem direct. And they could see the speed I was getting. "There isn't anything wrong with that" They said. I can't believe the appalling attitude of the tech support staff, and the customer support staff. If you complain then you are a pain in the ass. That's the impression I get! I said if the problem isn't sorted soon that I would cancel. The smart git in tech support even said "That's fine", and the number for sales is ......." This company is a complete joke! AVOID DIGIWEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NTL seem to have gotten their act together again recently, 3 people in the house are using the connection constantly without any issues... I just wish they would increase the download/upload allowance...

I Have Ripwave in Galway and its ok. Speed isnt great but its reliable and I can torrent all day, usuualy have to to get anything anyway. Browsing is slow but I'm used to it now, forget about streaming media or realtime online gameing, but for the student who rents and cannot commit to a longterm contract, its fine. I generaly get about 12 to 20 Kbps in Utorrent, and sometines up to 45 / 50 Kbps if im lucky.

I have Casey Cablesurf and am happy

I've got BT 2MB BB and I get 512kb download speeds. I live in Kells, Meath and I was getting 1,7MB stable speeds until 2 months ago, now it's gone downhill. I get 1,7 MB speed at 8 in the morning maybe for a few hours. You can see my speedtest result below. I am thinking to get UTV or Digiweb. Any suggestions?

FWI, Fast Wireless Internet (fwi.ie) don't seem to be on the list but have several hundred customers in the Tip/Clare areas. They're very good. I'm generally quite pleased after 18 months with them. I'd recommend them to anybody living in this area.

said no to clearwire in carlow as recently speed is wildly unstable and unreliable and tech people not really bothered.

Shame about Youtube and Google videos being REALLY slow in the evenings. It seems like they are throttling them sites. All other sites are fine.

I would have thought that it's google throttling the bandwidth there. No point in them delivering a full video if you're not gonna look at the whole thing.

What about latency/gaming/connection stability?

Not everyone uses their connection to download the latest rip of Hollyoaks.

I've been on Netsource (512/128), IOL(512/128 -> 2M/128), NTL (3M/300 -> 6M/???) and IBB fixed wireless (2M/2M).
Every single one of them were spikey connections which made playing games painful.
The packetloss and latency generally originated from hops within the ISP's network in each case.

Does any ISP offer RRDTool/MRTG/Cacti/real-time accurate traffic graphs to their customers?

even for games or large downloads. and im very much yet to be capped. *shh


i lose net access about one night per month. for at least a few hours

but ill survive. its usually pretty fast and reliable.

eircom last few years and havent decided if im happy!

get disconnected then immediately reconnected about 10 times a night. might be a dodgy cat5 or lan card though.

I'm with Cablewatch and it works fine, but it doesn't seem to be on your poll. I have IBB, Digiweb and Eircom in the past, the two former were completely worthless but Eircom were ok, aside from the crappy CS.

Have Smart at home and am very happy - great speeds, good customer service - it just plain works and then some...

Use 3 on the phone - complete opposite - crap service, bad support and just doesn't do what it says on the tin
