I asked a question about running shoes a while back. I got (and followed) some excellent advice. Click here for the thread.

Amphibian King (www.amphibianking.ie) are well worth a visit out in Bray.

Proper professional gait analysis at no extra cost to find the right shoe/support for your running style. Got my last pair there and will get the next pair there also.

I really think I should be on the payroll in amphibian king. I've sent sooooo many people out there. Including my brother who has just taken up running. I forgot to tell him that I knew Damien (from the shop) from a message board and since he has visited he hasn't stoped calling me hunnymonster, the freak.

Yep recommended. Expect to pay €90-150, think mine were 130

If you're just looking to buy something in Lifestyle or whatever, I have a pair of Asics and they're great.

Depends on what you're looking for tech.

If you're a serious heavy-duty runner and compete and stuff, I guess amphibian king is the place to go.

If you're just an occasional treadmiller like me, just get a pair with a thick heel that only bends at the base of the toe area on the shoe when you push back on the toe of the runner. Also make sure there's good heel support, i.e. that the heel area is rock solid most of the way up, and laterally, when you apply pressure.

But sure you probably knew that already...

In fairness I think the whole point of gait analysis is that impact points and requisite support varies in relation to your running style, build, weight.

As such it is well worth getting this checked - rather than buying a pair of shoes that your friend reckons are great. Amphibian King aren't making you a custom shoe, but they stock a good range and will help you pick the proper shoe for your running style.

This site should actually have banner ad's for that particular shop.
Fair enough it's good for people with abnormal spine/leg shapes but overall asics in any regular sport shops which are regularily on sale are perfect.

What you need to concentrate on are:
socks - to prevent blisters, look after your feet
    breathing - most important thing
heart rate - giving your body a chance to learn to run, building stamina without killing yourself.

Not going to help a suponator who wears shoes designed for a protonator much, especially then the shin splints kick in.

Tech - check out this link from the Runner's World website

    http://www.runnersworld.com/topic/0,7122,s6-240-319-0-0,00.html

It gives lots of great tips regarding running shoes. It should give you a good base if knowledge so that you can make an educated choice when you go to buy a pair of running shoes.

I think it's generally accepted that Asics and New Balance are excellent brands when it comes to Running Shoes. Personally, I have a pair of Asics Kayano and think they're great. I used to have terrible trouble with Shin Splints and since getting a pair of the Asics I've been fine.

I wouldn't mind checking out Amphibian King when the time comes to get a new pair. I suppose it could do no harm to get my running style assessed (more Phoebe from Friends than Linford Christie) by professionals.

    That really made me laugh.

Other good brands are mizuno, brooks, saucony and I'm sure there are others I've forgotten. I hear that nike are improving the quality of some of their shoes. I'm in asics at the moment (arnotts sale). My going-into-retirement pair at the moment are mizunos and I should look at getting back out to Bray before I move at the end of the month.

Was just looking for information on this, i think i'll head out to Bray and talk to those folks. I'm having terrible "shin splint" pain when running on a flat surface or down hill (uphill it's fine, im finding myself running uphill by choice which is never a good sign :p ) and am starting to think its the shoes.

    Thanks for info!

(you need to make an appointment with these guys or just walk in?)

Would you mind getting mine while you are there, saves me the trip ;)

Would they do astro type shoes as well for football? Ah sure i'll head down to him/them on saturday and see what the story is.

Asics are a decent brand. But there are asics for suponator/protonator and ones in between. Problem is most people selling them do not have a clue about what they sell, they sell fashion shoes. You will not see many brands in amphibian king, since they do not stock fashion shoes. The guy in the shop was asking me if I minded what colour they were, and had a sigh of relief when I said no ;)
He went off and got about 6 pairs saying they would suit me, got to have a jog around the carpark in 2 or 3 pairs.

The guy in champion sports was probably squirting ketchup on whoppers the week before, and no way they are going to let you jog down grafton street!

If you are unsure what style you are you can go for "in between" asics, find out online which models are which. It is sort of like buying a hybrid bike rather than a racer or mountain bike. But going into most sport shops the people will not know which is which, so if you get the wrong runners it is similar to trying to do the tour de france on a full suspension mountain bike, except the wrong shoes could injure you.

I imagine you could make an appointment, I just asked what time was quiet, I went on a saturday or sunday morning, around 11 I think. You could just email them. If you walk in you might have to wait, but they might say come back in 20mins, think they spend 10-30mins with each customer.

although there is possibly some value in getting this done and undoubtedly it beats the champions etc, one should be aware that correcting gait with orthotics (whether they be built in ala kayanos or custom made), the cause of the poor gait may be going untreated.

eg. the foot maybe over pronating to compensate for a hip/back problem etc.

just something to keep in mind - would be no harm getting a full gait analysis done by a good physio if it is severe pronation/supination. These scans only look at the ankle, nothing above it.

Runners are as personal as your undies!!;)

Do you need a stability shoe? Do you pronate? Do you supinate? Are your heavy or light?

Dunno what stores are good here as I've only been here 3 weeks, but I wear Asics Gel Kayano's Have for 5 years now. Just update every season. Not cheap, but what price your feet?!

My podiatrists recommends either Asics, New Balance or Saucony.

Mine aren't cheap, but I can get em $50 off if I pay cash. Worth every cent, especially now I am running on hard surfaces here in Dublin, back home it was soft river trails.

Whoops, I should have read all the posts before I posted!! Yeah, what they said. Looks like a good shop down there at Bray!

there is not one best all round running shoe out there, everyones foot varies from flat footed to high arched, someone who wears asics nimbus with comfort would suffer terribly in a pair of kyanos as would someone suited to a pair of nike pegasus, my advice have the shop assistant to try your foot out for the best shoe, they will know what to do, if they dont have a clue go elsewere as the wrong shoes WILL lead to injury

Thats an incredibly useful first post, congratulations. It is, however, quite possible that the OP has passed away at this stage!
