    Yup, was reading that earlier.

    Must.contain.excitement.

    :D

Not that Im buying of course. Just purchased my gadget for the year. But i know there will be a new one *appearing* on the desk at home for me to play with! woooohoooooo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,163 ✭✭✭ZENER

I thought the whole gadget thing was a male infliction . . you know . . . mine's bigger than yours etc.

So come on . . . do tell, what was waiting for you when you got home then ???? Er . . . I mean gadget of course :o ! On second thoughts maybe I don't wanna know . . . ;)

Based on the keyboard thread here I'm not over keen on the metallic design at all. Forgive me but it would be too masculine IMO - the whole metal thing. The appeal of the original white was it's 'soft' appeal which had a friendly feel about it making it appeal to family rather than just the male. I'm not sure the brushed metal will have the same AHHHH effect.

    My 2c . . .

    ZEN

You sound like me ZENER, so i know what you are thinking
When something new comes out you do not like the look of it, but as time passes by you end up liking it and looking back at the old thing and hating it.
We all know thats what will happen in the end. To everyone.

Example --- ( away from mac) --- when wwe changed the logo and music of monday night RAW a few months ago the very first thought that came into my mind was ' i hate that logo and i hate that music'. Weeks past. Now i love the new logo and the new music and i saw the old logo and heard the old music the other day and i hate the old music and the old logo now.
    Life is funny.

lol! I phrased that badly. What I meant was after forking out to upgrade my MBP i wont be buying a new iMac but there will be a new one at home when they come out! So I'll still get to play.

Filthy mind Zen. I like it :D hehe. And... I can't cope without regular gadget fixes!!

I HATE brushed metal so I don't like the idea of a metallic imac either. Design wise I really think the current ones are almost perfect. Anyway my imac isn't even a year old yet so I won't be buying another desktop anytime soon. I may get a macbook though as my ibook is starting to show it's age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

im buying the new iMac the second its released... i've been living it up here on my macbook while the rest of my family suffer with some old dell piece of §hit!!!

i think the metallic look of the new keyboard is savage!

Must keep an eye out for news of iMac stock shortages/long delivery delays; those almost always indicate a new model in the pipeline...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Im not sure im gone on the brushed metal for an iMac either. hmmm

Yeah - I get the feeling this new iMac range is change for the sake of change (although I'll probably think differently once it's announced).

The current iMacs are the sex and a few revisions would be all that's needed - but they can't have a big hoo-hah about slight hardware revisions, can they?

    Dear Steve,
New Mac Mini 2GHz Core 2 Duo. 1 GB Ram, 80Gb HD. €509.

    Yours in expectation,

    A Fan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Reuters news a few hours ago appear to be suggesting that Steve will show up at Cupertino to unveil and not just announce the new iMac and that the machine will be released for sale "shortly after".

    Funny quote as well:
Unlike other events where the company offers cleverly disguised hints in the form of catchy phrases or graphics, this briefing announcement came only with the information that Apple would be discussing something Mac related.

    lmao

    Dear Steve,
iMac graphics card option that doesn't suck ass. plz k thx!

    This is a new iMac.
Rumours were for a slim iMac with a metal finish, and slim keyboard.

I don't see why anybody has a problem with metal.
We're not talking a fake OS look, we're talking Powerbook/MBP finish.

For looks, it's Macbook vs Macbok Pro = current iMac vs new iMac.

I hate the cheap tacky white plastic look.
Good time to see it gone.
    Welcome, new sexy iMac.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

But its not going to be the same look as the Macbbok Pro. Its a brushed metal look - a la Safari. And when the rumour came out first im sure I remember a chat where you said you didnt think you liked the look either. Fair enough its grown on you, but maybe its just going to take longer for it to grow on others.

Im not gone on the white either. I think if the casing was the same as the Pro machines Id be very happy. But the rumours suggest that it will be a brushed steel look, as Apple keep the "titanium" look exclusively for the Mac Pro and Macbook Pro (and Powerbook obv) range. Pay for our high end machine and get something that looks impressive... Apple do not regard the iMac as high end.

Hopefully Steve will surprise us and prove all the rumours to be wrong.

Oh, I'm sorry, I take it you have seen one then?
I don't see brushed metal on the new iMac keyboard...

Jesus, with all this bickering about whether it's brushed metal or not, I'm now praying that Steve Jobs unveils a wood-finish iMac next week just to completely stupify and silence the entire mac fanbase.

For what it's worth I think the current iMacs are beautiful but the white glossed plastic look is so mimicked now it makes sense for Apple to move on; at the very least to ensure they're beaten to the next sexy look by Sony or someone.

That said I hope for and expect major improvements to the machine's design which go above and beyond a change of casing materials - not to mention the additional power they'll need to put under the hood to make it a worthwhile upgrade.

But maybe we'll have another case of Jobs' classic reality distortion field where he convinces us that the new iMac is better than the old iMac because it's enclosed in metal rather than plastic. Kind of like the way he convinced us that the launch of a two buttoned mouse in 2005 was somehow revolutionary.

Given that practically all the rumours I've been reading (not to mention this entire thread) have been dedicated to the type of casing that'll be used I'm not going to rule that out for a second.

Had this discussion following the WDC remember?? Im not claiming to know what it is going to be, im just merely stating what the rumours are suggesting. No need to be so sarky about it.

Personally I would have preferred black. But I can do metal.

The sad thing is, my next computer will probably be one of the current imacs. Ahh well.

My bro is planning on getting one of the new imacs ASAP, so Im chuffed about that. Dying to check it out.

Those words shouldn't go together. As much as I love Apple products, I'll never buy a first gen product again. Style - great, QA - ****e.
I when I bought a MBP, I was horrified to hear that they didn't have 52x CD burners. For that money, a decent CD drive should be included.
    I have a love-hate relationship with Apple.
These new iMacs, I'm still waiting to feel the love...

Perhaps you would have preferred a beige PC?
The modern PC world didn't know what to do when Apple started making white computers. But beige?!
Dell started the black computer thing... that's hopefully going to die a death soon too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,849 ✭✭✭condra

Ooh youre the real mister opinionated aren't you Oriel. :p

To reply to your first point, I dont have any problem with first gen Apple products. My first gen macbook has never had any problems. If my brother gets a first gen new model imac, and it turns out to have problems, you're welcome to take the p1ss if and when that happens.
Perhaps you would have preferred a beige PC?
No, I like black. I dont care if Dell do black. I would like to see an imac that would look good in a kitchen, bedroom or living room, and that's part of the reason why I dont like the white.

At the end of the day, horses for courses etc. We're all entitled to our opinions. Apple are never going to please everyone, but I have a good feeling about the new imacs.

yeah its a pitty there too damn expensive :( my funding means im relegated to iMac teritory

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,823 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

There's nothing wrong with black per se; you just need to do what the Macbook & DS Lite do -- outside is shiny black (aka expensive-looking!), inside is a lovely "brushed" matt black (aka functionally reassuring).

You know what I'd really like to see though?
A return to colours. Red, orange, green, navy-blue... this whole clinical, sci-fi industrial design is too cold IMHO.
Or curves; the only thing I like about the PS3 design (lovely design, better than the functionally small but plain Wii, and the bulbous & BIG 360). Gimme some curves, nature intended them to be beautiful! ;)

nahh i reckon if we get brushed metal imacs there going to look exactley like the 20" cinema display with the addition of isight, microphone, and optical drive in the side,

id like to see colours back though, my g3 imac collection is looking mighty colourful :P

btw - i require orange, green, strawberry to finish my collection

So anyone want to make some daring predictions for tomorrow? It will give you gloating rights if you are proven correct. :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 438 ✭✭StephenC_IRL

my iMac prediction as above, iPhone in Europe info (possibly release date, operator(s) ) , the future of the mac mini, my personal bet is discontinued and replaced by something smaller (mac nano perhaps), New cinema displays with the isight built in (23" discontinued and moved up to a 24" to coencide with the imacs sizes,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,849 ✭✭✭condra

I predict, and hope to see, a flurry of competitively priced second hand current-gen imacs for sale in the coming weeks and months :D

new imac pics leaked onto the internet. looks just like the Apple Cinema Displays, quite nice actually.

I think you'll find there were black Macs (Performas?) in the mid nineties. I think the PCs followed that one quite quickly, Apple then had a problem sourcing the black and changed back to beige.

    from a live blog

Built from aluminum and glass, the new all-in-one desktops feature a complete redesign and will come in two sizes: 20-inch and 24-inch.

    new imac
    dsc_1309.jpg

    dsc_1310.jpg

    dsc_1323.jpg

"New iMac. Also, new keyboard. You might have seen this on the web. Two USB ports. 0.33", full complement of keys, including dedicated keys for screen dimmer and brighter, expose, media controls, volume controls, eject for optical drive. This is the new iMac with the new keyboard and mouse. Wireless? New wireless keyboard, beautiful, very compact. People love to hold them in their lap. Bluetooth 2.0, all these dedicated keys as well."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭spidermonkey

****ing hell, check out the specs

"Up to 2.4GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, up to 4GB of memory. ATI Radeon HD graphics card, up to 1TB of hard drive storage. 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0 built-in. What models will we have? Up until now, 17-inch, 20-inch, and 24-inch. Well, today we're replacing the 24-inch, lowering price by $200, 20-inch at same $1499. replacing 17-inch with $1199 model."

looks like a viable power mac

People on Gizmodo saying the thing must feature a multi-touch userface - that's what the black around the screen is for and why they chose glass etc.

I think they're getting a bit carried away, but you never know!

I'm still not impressed but its grown on me - waiting to see the Euro prices but if I'm honest I'd buy one if I had the cash. But I don't!

Should rephrase my last post - commenters on Gizmodo are talking about multi-touch, not the actual site's staff or any one in the know etc.!
