Whats the best breakfast cereal to eat.....

I know that a lot of people recommended Alpen or Museli...this is ok but you get fed up with it day in day out.

I'm currently eating Rice Crispies with some honey and super milk.....would this be considered as healthy?????

Trying to get in shape to run an 8 mile race.

    Thanks

    porridge.
let it sit in cold milk for 10 mins and then eat/drink. Much nicer than hot porridge.

Standard Alpen is also laden with sugar and salt. You could try a salt/sugar free variety and add some fresh fruit (apple, blueberries, banana) to make it more interesting.

I'm having home made muesli made from porridge, walnuts, almonds and sunflower seeds, with raisins and blackberries and milk.

Not too sure about the blackberries though, too bitter. I had better luck with raspberries and the mango I had last week was great. :p

If you get fed up with museli and don't fancy porridge (we just don't seem able to convince some people) then why not try something else for breakfast. Scrambled eggs and homemade brown bread takes less than 5 minutes to make.

What is the 8 mile race?

    Healthy cereals? Let's see...

    Ingredients of Alpen:
Oat Flakes, Whole Wheat, Raisins (may be coated with hydrogenated vegetable oil), Barley, Brown Sugar, Roasted Hazelnuts, Skim Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Sliced Almonds, Barley Malt Extract.
22g carbs per 30g serving, of which 6g is sugars, 110 cals, 1.5g fat, 0g trans fat.

Ingredients of No Added Sugar/ Salt Alpen:
Oat Flakes, Whole Wheat, Raisins (may be coated with hydrogenated vegetable oil), Barley, Roasted Hazelnuts, Skim Milk Powder, Whey Powder, Sliced Almonds, Barley Malt Extract.
Exactly the same, just no sugar. 21g carbs per 30g serving, of which 3g are sugars, 110 cals, 1.5g fat, 0g trans fat.

    Ingredients of Country Store:
Oats, Maize, Wholewheat, Brown Sugar, Sultanas (8.5%), Milk Whey Powder, Sugar, Wheat Bran, Hazelnuts (1.5%), Dried Apple (1%), Salt, Barley Malt Flavouring, Honey, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.
so that's four sources of sugars and added salt!! 20.4g carbs per 30g, of which 7g sugars, 106 cals, 1.5g fat.

Ingredients of traditional oatmeal/ porridge (not supermarket bought instant oats):
    Oats
    20g carbs per 30g, 0g of which sugars, 117 cals, 2g fat.

So this is where the whole calorie counting/ sugar content issue comes into it. On teh surface, all these mueslis have the same calorie content but vary in the amount of sugar they have. High sugar content means a likelihood of lot sof simple sugars that are nutritionally void and wreak havok with your insulin.

Then if you look at some of the popular cereals on the market:

    Rice crispies:
RICE, SUGAR, SALT, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, MALT FLAVORING,
28g carbs per 30g, of which 3g sugars, 118 calories, 0g fat. It has lots of added vitamins and minerals, but it's still very high GI and won't fill you up like a cereal made of wholegrains will.

    Special K:
Rice, Wheat (Wholewheat, Wheat Flour), Sugar, Wheat Gluten, Defatted Wheatgerm, Dried Skimmed Milk, Salt, Barley Malt Flavouring, Vitamin C, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.
Again, in the "low-fat" cereal, sugar is the third main ingredient. 'Defatted' wheatgerm means it will have been stripped and processed - not good. 23g carbs per 30g of which 5g sugars, 112 cals, 0.5g fat.

Really, the best cereals are made from nutritious complex carbs, with simple ingredients that fill you up and give you long-lasting energy. Oats are pretty much the best out there, and as has been said you can liven up the flavour with your own ingredients - fresh or dried fruits and berries, seeds and nuts, yoghurts or just the traditional dash of salt. Or even make a morning smoothie with them - chuck the oats into a blender with milk, yoghurt and your fruit of choice, give it a very quick whirr and drink!!

Or, like hm said - scrambled eggs in the morning are YUM!! A 2:1 white:whole ratio, almond/ sesame oil in them for healthy fats and add a little bit of grated cheese for flavour.

I'm a big fan of mixing 2 scoops of oats, fresh fruit, glenisk yoghurt and whey all together in a bowl and chowing down on that.

    Funking yum.

I have you all beat the best thing first thing in the morning is pancakes
1-2 eggs plus 2 white's , (really the eggs are just what you would have scrambled)
half a cup un-cooked oats (or just the amount the you would of used to make your porridge)
    1-2 heaped tea spoon splenda
    cinnamon to taste

whack it all in a blender and cook on a Teflon pan

I played around (dropped some egg whites ) with it to keep the mix thick (it all depends on your needs) , also you can add low fat cottage cheese to it 1/2 -1 cup

How is this high in sugar? Is it because i add a dash of honey to it?

i take flahavan's hi 8, weetabix, oatabix or homemade smoothie - obviously on diff days
usually such a mix stop me getting bored.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,208 ✭✭✭loismustdie

weetabix could be bad as it's estimated that half the population haven't got the enzymes to break down wheat due to overeating of it in general so oatabix would be better maybe.
is it not true that alkaline and acids shouldn't be mixed for digestive reasons , ie - fruit and yoghurts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

    Weetabix is high GI.

It does nothing for me - an hour after eating a bowl, I'm starving again.

takes longer to digest that food as the two different stomach acids that are required for them can sometimes cancel each other out or counter-affect each other

best to only each fruit on any empty stomach and by itself

    How many are you having?

Have you tried adding fruit to it like a banana or chopping up an apple in it?

Bump, throw in some nuts and you have the perfect breakfast

Oat Bran porridge is the nicest and softest and is 15% protein and 15% fibre.

I like porridge and weetabix - and try to stick to those only! I also have some protien with my breakfast - like some cheese or an egg. Slows down the release of energy from the carbs apparently.
Actually - if anyone knows can they confirm that - what is the purpose of eating protien with your breakfast - as this is a fairly new concept to me so i want to be sure it is sound!
