Desperately trying to get fit...

Hey there, I'm 19, 5'9" and Weigh nearly 12 stone.

I'm thin but am really really really unfit. I used to be really active in my earlier years until about when I turned 12 when I found a computer :P.

I start college this Sept. and am gonna buy a bike. It will result in me cycling from Carrickmines (Dublin 18) to Dun Laoghaire. I dont know how far that is, but its pretty far by bike. I'm really gonna push myself to get fit as its very unhealthy with the way I am. I get out of breath going up the stairs in my house.

I dont smoke and eat healthy. I'm just not active.

If you got any other recommendations for getting fit, please tell me.

    :)

Eh just eat well, by that I mean often and and a good balance of macros with fruit/veg aswell.

And train, cycle to college, lift weights, it's hard to be more specific when all you say is "fit".

You should post up your diet in detail.

    Ah I see.

Well by fit I mean... not being out of breath, being able to run long distances with not much effort, and being generally in good shape and health because now I'm my body gets stressed when I try some exercise.

I eat lots of fruit and veg, I think that I may have to just get into the routine of working out lightly, i.e. as you mentioned, lifting weights and cycling.

Thank you for you reply too :).

That's kinda how i started out on my "road to fitness". Started running a little bit when i was about 15. Kept that up and now i can
run long distances with not much effort
I also cycle to college/work everyday (about 15k all in) and at the moment i've 2 jobs, so that's 15k seven days a week.

I also started out with the basics of a few pushups and situps and went onto a few chin ups off goalposts in the park outside my house. That gradually built up and i decided a set of dumbells were in order. They came with a little chart of different exercises to try. I added those into my "routine" and started looking better. Then i joined the gym when i started college. Kept running and cycling most of the time. I never thought about what i ate though until about a year ago when i decided to give a triathlon a shot.

I'm not great with my food, but i usually eat porridge and a protein shake for breakfast, peanut butter sandwich @ 10am, chicken with mixed veg at lunch (usually peppers or brocolli and carrot), some fruit at about 3.30 with some nuts if i've bought a bag that week, then dinner at about 7 or so (generally spag bol/chicken spuds and veg etc..) i find it hard to get that 6th meal in everyday, but sometimes i'd have another protein shake if i've been out running/cycling. Everyday, without fail, i have a kitkat with my lunch. 80c from the vending machine, and i enjoy it!!! I don't like fizzy drinks, so they're not a problem.

If i go through a phase of being consistent with the above i usually feel quite good and leaner. Then usually feck it all up with too many pints on a saturday night followed by "recovery food" from good ole' mcdonalds on a sunday in work.

Overall i've found that to be consistent i need to be mindful of what i want and plan out most of the week - e.g. have enough food to last the week, and make my lunches the night before and pack my swimming gear too. Otherwise i'll just sleep it out for work, not have enough time to make said lunch, or grab the swimming gear. It'll feck up my day, and then i'll say "ah sure, i'll get back at it next week".

So here's my advice in a nutshell is: Don't go mental on the weights/running/cycling - build it up; Eat right, but don't completely deprive yourself as you'll get p1ssed off quickly; Plan ahead and above all, try to be consistent, even if it means doing a moderate amount of work every week instead of 1 intense week followed by 3 sh1te ones.

There's plenty of people on the board who know tonnes more than I do, but i'm still quite new to this, so i thought another noob's experience might help.

Thats alot of information yah gave me there and am really thankful. You were kinda in the same position as me when you're 15 then. So I should be able to take all this in and incorporate it into my lifestyle :D.

    Thanks man.
