Well I get tuppence a week and jam every other day. Always jam yesterday and tomorrow, never today.

What do you mean, "how much do boards.ie moderators make"? Fun and all as it would be to have people post made-up figures, you weren't actually under the illusion that anybody got paid, were you?

/me runs off into the distance waiting for my head to fall off with the laughter and the cackling and the giggles and...

As Kaimera has just pointed out, its 45K a year for every Mod on boards.ie.

Except for Spankeh, he just gets a free subscription and a packet of jellybeans each month. Probably because he mods all the crappy forums.

I didn't make my ban quota (anyone up for a banning..please I have mortgage to pay and the loan sharks are after me) this week and got docked a days pay because I didn't login yesterday as I was a few minutes late*. Them admins can be tough sometimes but it is making me stronger!
I still haven't used my 'complimentary' sitebans.

    *big bunch of fibs..maybe

To answer the OP there are a lot of factors in determining mod pay.
It would break a number of rules to detail the exact amounts but I will tell you the factors.
In no particular order, here they are:

    Number of forums moderated
There's a basic salary and then a supplimentary bonus per additional forum.

    Seniority
    Calculation is -
number of years as a member + 2(number of years as a mod) = X
X multiplied by Y (this is the bonus amount) = annual seniority bonus

    Mod type
For each mod level you get your basic forum salary multiplied by 1.5, so if a normal mod earns X, a Cmod earns X(1.5) = Y, and a Smod would earn y(1.5).

    Number of posts
This is a minor one; only a few cent per post.

    Work load bonus
This was introduced after complaints by a few mods, such as those looking after PI and AH. Certain forums provide grants to moderators due to the additional workload.

    Ban bonus
There's a set amount per ban, depending on the type of ban handed out. Although it should be noted that these are randomly reviewed by Admins to ensure no-one is just banning for the sake of the bonus.
(legitimate site bans are worth twice as much as cat bans and four times as much as individual forum bans; length of ban tends not to matter.)

    Hours
Certain mods with responsibility for numerous fora, whole categories or the entire site can claim expenses for the amount of hours they put in - this is based on their "real" job wage as it is assumed that they're taking time from their real jobs to work on boards.ie.
Low ranking mods such as myself can't claim this but are given an annual flat rate fee to cover loss of earnings.

I got the accounts once. I was all like "Hey regi, 'show me da fukin' money" and he just wips out this bar mate and lashes down a seven digit number and on 01 prefix. Now some say that this is the amounth of revenue, some say regi slipped me his number, and some say i made this story up, the important thing is to be true to yourself.

45 posts in and I'm going to spoil everyone's fun.

OP, since this is feedback, you deserve at least one serious answer to your question (and shame, SHAAAAAAAAME on the rest of you).

The moderators on boards.ie do not get paid for the work they do. There are over 300 mods on the site, some of whom have a harder job than others because they moderate busier forums. Other moderators have responsibility - both sole and joint - for more than one forum.

Mods are usually offered a modship by the administrators for a number of reasons including consistent, proven good behaviour as users, regular contribution to the forums, an interest in the subject, often expressed by clocking up a LOT of hours online and - allegedly - some indication of a minimum level of cop-on.

There are a number of standing jokes regarding moderator payment, including that they are paid in beer, coke & hookers and sexual favours from the administrators. The fact is, the whole sorry lot of them do it for the LOVE OF THE FORUMS.

It works for the same reasons that voluntary charities, neighbourhood watch schemes and vigilantism work. People do the work because they want to.

It is worth noting that the level of abuse towards moderators has grown with the number of users on the forums, and the perceived unhelpfulness of the moderators themselves (I'm looking at this very thread for SHAAAAAAAAME the lot of you) could well be because it is unpaid labour and they're sick of getting shat upon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

i know a few people who like being shat on.

every day is steak and blowjob day for boards moderators.

What you guys get coke and hookers ?

There must have been a spelling mistake on my contract, I get unlimited Hoki (fish) and access to cookers :(
