    Inspired by some conversation in another thread, Which do you prefer? I myself would like to get some form of British Army helmet. Although I'm still trying to figure out would it be too cumbersome/uncomfortable.

    I've got a couple of boonies, a couple of delta style protecs and a Viper k-pot but I haven't quite settled on one yet. I like the idea of a helmet so I think the hunt continues. Boonies don't do it for me.

    Boonie.

    Although I have a cap in S95 too that I sometimes wear.

    Boonie all the way

    I use one of those neoprene face masks too just to hide the skin. Offers some protection too

    well i like helmet, but be advised, they insulate your head, so if you are running you do tend to get a bit hot. i think an old vietnam style headwrap is in order...

    i have a delta, boonie hat and am looking for a mich 2002...the boonie hat is the cooler, but i keep thinking i am at some tacky seaside resort with a stick of rock wearing it...

    Ah I'm used to running in a helmet. American football is handy for that, blazing sun combined with 25 or so pounds of protective gear strapped tight to your head and torso and a few kilometres worth of running at a time. I wish I could get a camelbak to fit my armour.

    I'd like one of these though

    I love my preformed bandana :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,149 ✭✭✭✭Lemming

    I voted bandana, although not just for asthetics. It serves a practical purpose in my case in that it also keeps my hair back ;)

    That said, I'm not aversed to wearing helmets (I wear one for CQB sometimes) or boonies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 969 ✭✭✭MaxForce

    Voted helmet. With a balaclava and a face mask. Might be a bit over kill but will let you know when I finaly get a chance to skirmish.

    If its outdoors it's got to be a boonie or cap.

    Indoors it's a gas mask and overalls with a hood, i.e. the SAS anti terrorist gear.

    Got one of them myself, only problem is my goggles fog up within minutes of putting it on :(. Ah well, I'll just have to save it for the colder weather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

    Are the goggles ventilated? Mine fogged up a lot when I wore it until I realised there were side slats on them that could be snapped open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 763 ✭✭✭Dar

    They are indeed, not only that but I tore off the foam that was covering the vents to get better circulation. They're great most of the time, but with the mask on the added insulation around the face causes some serious condensation on the inside of the goggles.

    Havn't fully decided what i prefer meself yet either, either an Od green/black watch cap or a tan baseball cap or well ...neither and just good facial protection :p .
    i think an old vietnam style headwrap is in order...
    ive been wanting to try that out aswell.

    Word to the wise, don't do what I did and use a US flag bandana. Turns out it stands out a mile in foliage. Who'd would've thought it?

    Tried out (in skirmish conditions)
    * boonie + oakleys (good)
    * balaclava + oakleys (very good)
    * boonie + balaclava + oakleys (not good)
    About to try (in skirmish conditions)
    * protec + XL goggles
    * protec + oakleys
    * protec + balaclava + oakleys
    * protec + balaclava + XL goggles

    ATM the most comfortable is still boonie + oakleys ('beachwear' :D - not for CQB and don't come crying if ya get hit in face), the most practical is still balaclava + oakleys and the "best looking" goes to protec + balaclava + XL goggles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

    Oakleys do ANSI certified glasses too ambro! You can look uber-cool and still be protected in CQB situations. Of course, they cost a bit more, even than regular oakleys. Which isn't bloody cheap anyway!

    I have a problem with trusting hardware from a country who's only military achievements are civil wars and retreats.

    I know (mine are not "Oakleys" as such, but cloned and ANSI-cert'd).

    Re. CQB, my comment was that with boonie + oakleys in CQB, the only 'real protection' you get at close range is from the glasses, so accidental headshots hitting anywhere else is gonna hurt.

    Hey! My points on that dispicable place are valid (though entirely my own)!

    Go to google. Search for French Military Victories and click the "I'm feeling lucky" button. Notice there are no entries. Follow the link that says "Did you mean French Military Defeats". Read that and tell me I'm wrong!

    Also it should be noted that the French are the proud creators of the worlds fastest REVERSE gear. It's used in their APC's. For retreating.

    Back on topic -
    My mate was telling me about something called a shellmet the other day, haven't had a chance to go looking for one yet but they sounded pretty good. Like a low profile pro-tec with ear-guards

    I take it France didn't win @ Verdun then? Napoleon didn't conquer more of Europe and 'round the Med than Adolf? The GIGN didn't successfully storm that Airbus at Roissy in a textbook specops that only the SAS have bettered at the Iran embassy?

    Everyone knows teh interweb is teh truth, nothing but teh truth eh? ;)

    P.S. Coming from a Yank or a Brit, I'd understand and be quieter, but coming from an Irish, well... we may not have won, nor fought that well - but at least we fought :p

    Back on topic - that's a shellmet:
    37001_blk.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

    I didn't say it was all true! I just said I agree with it, regardless of how fudged the facts are!
    And we did fight, but in fairness, the Irish army is supposed to only have enough ammo for 2 or so minutes of firing every weapon. We're not fighting because we're saving up!

    Sir, I disregard your reality and substitute it with one of my own. One where France's roads are my private race track and Paris is the worlds greatest CQB site.

    That's a shellmet? That's the thing I was thinking of getting anyway. Nifty

    We dont fight because we're just a small country. Where the hell would we put all the POWs we'd capture ??

    That'd be against the Geneva convention article outlawing cruel and inhumane treatment. :)

    We could clean it up a bit? And by clean it up I mean "borrow" some MOAB's and Daisy Cutters from the US and do an enthusiastic Tidy Town's job on the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,121 ✭✭✭N.O.I.P.

    From a poll on headgear to dissing France to making plans to obliterate Longford with MOABs in order to create a POW camp for when Ireland goes to war.

    I love this thread :D

    e.g. "Do the French make head-mounted MOABs for the Irish army?"

    French made MOABs are all faulty. They give out nothing more than a small garlic smelling fart. Good French weapons are limited to the French Sheep Strike from Worms 2 and The Michelen Bomb which destroys any hotel below 3 stars

    For safety reasons I'm wearing a helmet while typing.

    I would move to any part of the country willing to put this game on.

    And anyway, according to NakedDex's theories about retreating, you'll never catch me! Mwahahaha!

    The French retreat a lot, but they still don't survive or win!

    And that shellmet looks pretty good in od. I'd prefer something lower profile though.

    Um,

    Twice in the last century and once in the 19th Century. Results as follows;

    Franco-Prussian war (because there was no Germany as we know it today). Siege of France, Armistice agreed by the Third Republic during the siege of Paris. 1-0 to Germany with the aid of Bismarck (who was the lying git who started the whole shebang).

    World War 1: Absurdly drawn out trench warfare, France squashed under the heel of German riding boots, enter the allies (UK & America) as substitutes: Germany loses but France is a disaster area one all draw.

    World War 2: Revenge of the Bosch: The sound of Wagner crosses the border - French army surrenders - Germans occupy France for the next few years. 1-0 Sausage suckers.

    Edit: Lovely baked goods in France though.
