howdy! well, as a 17year old teenage guy your problem certainly isn't unique - right now your metabolism is in hyper-drive and if you're the kind of person who's just naturally slim (aka an ectomorph if you want to talk nerdling-ish) you will find it more difficult than most to put on weight. But it's relatively easy to overcome - you eat. Honestly it's that simple, but you just need to be clever about WHAT you eat and WHEN you eat.

Supplements are just that - additions to your regular diet. If you look at the ingredients list in the weight-gainer you should find that it's full of sugars (anything that ends in "-ose" like sucrose, fructose, dextrose, glucose) and proteins, that is they're just food in powder form. In other words the weight gainer isn't giving you any magical ingredients, it's just providing a convenient way to get in extra calories without having to eat a huge meal. The problem with them is, if you're not working out, these calories (especially as they're sugar-based) won't go to good use and so you run the risk of it being used for fat depositis instead of lean mass gain.

You need to eat a lot, and you ned to eat often. Eating big three times a day isn't what we constitute a lot btw!! You'll need to eat 5-6 times a day and eat quality foods that are healthy and calorie dense. I'm guessing you're still living at home which does make it a little more awkward, as it means relying on your parents to help feed you, and your Mum will give you more than one sideways glance when you're eating the full contents of the fridge on a daily basis, but really, that's just what has to be done.

Don't be afraid of eating heavy, fatty foods as long as they're 'realtively' healthy, not endless Big Mac meals. Fatty foods like nuts and nut butters (peanut butter), cooking oils like olive oil, almond oil, sesame oil, and full-fat dairy by the bucket load will help give you plenty of extra protein and good fats in your diet. Basically just try and eat every two or three hours, but don't eat sweets and junk - take extra sandwiches to school/ college with you, take hard boiled eggs as snacks, sit down with a jar of peanut butter and a spoon if you want a snack in front of the tv!!

There's quite a few guys who've been in your position too and have very sucesfully put on a bit of mass so maybe they can chime in too. Are you going to a gym regularly at the moment? Alongside your diet, heavy lifting is the guaranteed way to help you get bigger (not Arnie big before you get some crazy ideas...!!).
