She wanted sky + instead of the ordinary box but was told to wait till august 8 and get the sky +box free as there is a new offer then. I dont know if this is old news but I decided to post this for anyone thinking about same.

Not entirely new yet not old news but good news.

Yes it was featured on this thread http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055112419
but when I rang them, even though I have a copy of the offer in my hand they hadnt any information on it and told me to contact them in a week.
So now at least we know they know and they know you know and now you know we know that it starts on Aug 8th  (and finishes Aug 31st) :(
    Gracias

Ok, so lets get this straight. This offer is DEFINITELY coming out on August 8th? I can get a Sky + box for nothing (same as standard box)??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭De Bellem

I rang sky on on saturday afternoon last. My location is cork and the rep. of sky also said she was in cork. ( I presume they have a call centre there but dont know.) We told her the package we wanted and sky +. We were told that there was a new offer from Aug 8 and to wait. Our details were taken and she said she would ring back then. Considering we were signing up with the price of sky+ factored in I was delighted and took her option to wait for the offer of the free sky+ box. I dont know why she would have said this if it was not true.. .... Yet....

I rang sky customer service just now. Their rep went off , came back and said the uk was different to roi. She said she didnt know anything about this but that the older type box is being phased out and maybe they are starting with ireland and if I was offered the free sky+ box to take it.

All I can do is wait for that call back and let you all know immediately

So paddy all I can say for now is.... Definitely ..... Maybe....

    Thanks De Bellem.

I actually phoned Sky directly this morning and was told that yes - there is indeed an offer. It's an "introduce a friend" offer. So basically, i need to get a mates Sky card number or account number - then phone up and order sky, giving those details. Then i get a Sky + box for free, in place of a standard box.... sweet as a nut!!

Have phoned a local installer (as i don't really want Sky doin the install), he says he hasn't heard of this but will get back me about it.

My friend works with Abtram (sp?) at the Airport Business Park, he says Sky have a new call centre there.

Does this Sky+ offer mean they'll be won't be giving ordinary boxes any more?

I don't think so - it's an introductory offer for 1 month only, offer ending on August 31st....

As I said above I have listed the details and terms and conditions on the thread where I announced this offer the day it arrived in the post.
It is only available to Irish customers by ringing the Cork call centre.
It is only available from Sky, not independent installers.
Only thing not clear then but inferred and partially confirmed is that the referring Sky customer must be a Sky+ customer.
Refer to my post in the other thread for other details.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭De Bellem

I am glad a lot of the sky+ offer situation is clearer but with regards to wil"s last post I was never asked whether I was a sky + customer or not so I dont know if that is required. It was my sister who would get the sky+ box instead of the ordinary one and for those interested the 75 euro introduce a friend offer would still apply.

(I dont intend to keep it for myself)

Absolutely correct. I phoned up again this evening and discovered that the referring Sky customer MUST be a Sky+ customer!

Wasn't aware that it was only available from Sky and not the independent installers though... bummer!

Does this offer apply to existing Sky customers who want to upgrade to Sky+??

Sorry MickH503, don't know the answer to that but I do have 2 more questions:
My sister has a Sky+ so I might see if I can avail of this free Sky+, invite a friend offer.

    1. What is the €75 introduce a friend offer about? Do you get credit, cash or what?
    2. Is there an initial installation/equipment charge for signing up? If so, what is it? How does it compare to getting a local installer?

    Thanks,
    Brian

    /Edit - 3. Do I need a phone line for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭wil

OK I'll repeat it again on this thread.

"Introduce a friend to SkyTv and give them a free Sky+ box."

Offer for new customers extended to 31 Aug - save 149 and first month free

    T&Cs (paraphrased)
new 12 month sub (€22 to €68) (September prices)
    Standard installation €45
    New household
    Phoneline
Existing (referring) customer must remain customer throughout same period.

Available from Sky Ireland only 0818 716015
Not available if you purchase Sky from retailer.

Other details not on offer card
    commences 8th Aug
referrer must be Sky+ customer (you could try getting away with this as it is not mentioned on the card)

I doubt it also includes the €75 back (also not mentioned on the card) to the referrer as this is a separate offer and it does say not with any other offer, but again its worth a try, why should the referrer lose out.

So to mick NO. You might be able to figure a way but it means a new sub at a new address whatever you do.
Dr P - 1 dont know what denomination the 75 comes as, perhaps Dow Jones shares but it is an existing offer to an existing customer who refers a new customer, and somehow Sky will make that person €75 better off for it.
2 Standard install €45, non standard - who knows, installer? - ask around, you know your locality better than us. Maybe some of the installers on line here might give you some guidelines.
3 Phoneline required in the T&Cs. Unplug after install and worry about it only if becomes a problem (discussed on other threads, also alternative phone systems and no phone possibilities)

Thanks Wil, I guess I'll wait 'til the 8th August and see what I can get outta them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

Good info wil. Will I be able to avail of this offer by applying online or will I need to ring that number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭wil

That phone number only according to the card.
You need to quote "Introduce a friend offer"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

I cant find any info about it on the Sky website yet...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

    Success!
I just rang them and set up my account using the new introduce a friend offer
    - Free Sky+ box
    - €45 installation fee
    - 1st month subscription free - ALL channels & mixes
    - €21.50 per month after that with basic package incl 2 'mixes'
    - Phone line required
    - NO €75 for introducer - She said the Sky+ box was normally €149 so that is the main freebie in the offer!
    - Not sure if the introducer has to have a Sky+ box. She didn't ask.
    - Installation within 7-10 working days (you can specify weekday or weekend)

    Thanks for the advice,
    Brian

anyone know if Sky install a quad LNB as standard, and if they will install an extra point if you're not planning to get multiroom? (just thinking I might get another box for the FTA channels in the future).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,188 ✭✭✭wil

Thanks for that confirmation DrP and delighted to hear it all worked out well.
Did they ask you for the introducers Sky number or phone number? Is this a Plus customer?
Slightly surprised they didnt mention anything about a Sky+ customer, but now that there is no extra sub for Plus it is probably a T&C they are not too fussy about
I dont think this offer is likely to appear on the website as it will be over by the time they update the site, and I suspect it was intended to be a limited offer maybe their marketing guys testing the water, limited in that it was only advertised to some existing Sky+ customers. (I havent heard of anyone else who received the offer card)

Sky normally install a quad lnb for Sky+ (little difference in price to a twin)
Unless you are getting multiroom they will only bring 2 cables from the lnb to the Plus box.
If you want the extra cable you will have to pay something extra on top of the €45. Ask them politely with cup of tea in hand;) and they may make it worth your while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

She asked for the introducer's phone number. Then when she found the customer, she asked me to confirm their address and my sister's D.O.B funnily enough! My sister is a Sky+ customer alright but that never came up. I guess the girl I was dealing with probably would've seen that she is a Sky+ customer but I wasn't asked so can't tell you if it's a necessity for the offer.

My sister didn't receive any info about that offer so it must have just been sent to a random sample as you suggested wil.

    Thanks again

Thanks for the info guys. Its a bit strange asking for the DOB though isnt it. My friend is out of the country atm so I wonder would that affect things. I want to order asap so I can get to wathc the football :D

My sister was asked the same and asked the operator what was the purpose / relevance. She said she was uncomfortable with giving that information and the operator said she had to ask and carried on without getting any answer. I dont know BFassassin what is that all about but it should not be an important issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭De Bellem

Just on my last post. My sister did give her date of birth. She was told it was for security reasons But she was asked also for her maritial status and that is where she refused. Sorry BFassassin for the last post I hope that this makes it clearer

I've also now taken advantage of this offer - rang Sky yesterday, install next week, no complications.

3 things that had been putting me off prior to this - cost of Sky+ box, €15 Sky+ subscription, lack of Channel 4. These are now all solved, and it'll cost me less than I am currently paying to NTL with 100% extra functionality. Everyone's a winner (except for NTL who really need to pull their finger out getting their PVR to the market).

Good stuff.... i phoned up on Tues night last just to make sure that the offer was real - it was! Wil actually emailed me on the brochure as well (thanks wil).

Anyways, my brother in law is coming to run some Co-Ax cable for me on Saturday - i currently only have one point where my main TV is (used for NTL at the moment). For Sky + i need to cables going into the box from the dish, so he's gonna run 4 cables and a phone line for me.

Problem is, as i have hollow-core in my house, we're gonna have to run this externally in a ducting up to the attic. Going to distribute the Sky signal to my other TV's in the house by using Dist. Amplifier in the attic and magic eye's on the TV's.

Once the cables are run, i'm gonna call Sky and order it.

You say they're coming out to you next week? Is that a definite i wonder? Thing is, i need to cancel my NTL subscription, and have to give 30 days notice. As far as i know once i cancel it, they'll switch it off the same day, so i don't wanna be without TV while waiting for Sky to come and install......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,373 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

install on Wednesday - the guy seemed fairly certain. I take it they can't use the standard co-ax that NTL are currently using?

    Yes, quad is standard.
Yes, the installer will generally run an extra wire for you to a spare room to use with an FTA box. Well mine did yesterday when he installed Sky+ after I moved house and I asked him nicely if he wouldn't mind doing it so I could use my old standard box asa FTA receiver. He did a good neat job so i threw him a few quid for doing it for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,373 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

how much is a few quid (i'm not being tight, I just never know how much to tip people)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

Thanks Ludo. Very useful information for me because the exact same situation exists in my folks house where an installation is being done Monday week. They also have an old Sky box which could be used with a FreeView card.

loyatemu, not sure but I suppose it would depend on things like
    - how long the installer spends doing the extra work
    - how much hassle you deem he/she has doing it
    - how willing and co-operative he/she is
    - how neat and effective a job is done
I'd imagine anywhere between 20 and 50 would be sufficient although I could be way off ;)

Exactly DrPepper. They did a very good job for me after spending a while sorting things out. Even set up the fta box and tuned in the english channels which I didnt really care about doing as I was going to do it myself later (although he didnt seem to realise how to get the english EPG which I did myself). I threw them 40 euro. Never sure myself how much to give to be honest.

Will depend on the installer though if they do it. Get a grumpy fecker and you are in trouble. Can't say I have ever met one of those though. Any installer I have dealt with has always been very helpful.

So what about existing customers?? I have the basic sky instalation with 4 mixes. My sister has sky+, so I was thinking, I could get my girlfriend (we live together) to ring up sky and order the "sign up a friend" offer. Will sky come out and install sky+, even though we have sky installed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

Not sure exactly but I know when I rang up for my parents and tried to apply under my mother's name, they found our address on their system from an account my father had set up a couple of years ago.

Turned out we were still eligible though for the 'introduce a friend'. The account my father had set up was never used. At the time, they gave us 3 separate install dates and never showed up for any of them! Not sure if that was a Sky or an independent installer but hopefully we can avoid the same hassle this time around.

Ring them and ask what they can do for you. They are quite good and accommodating on the phone!

Nope - just press number 3 after ringing, then you get straight through to someone who is there to sign you up. I was 20 mins on the phone in total!

I'm really interested in getting SKY in, however am currently hooked up to NTL's digital and broadband service so am not sure if I am hooked in or not. Perhaps someone could advise?

Was set up with NTL broadband last February, so I'm not sure if I can get out and switch across to SKY?

Anyone know if this is possible - would NTL try to impose some sort of penalty?

Would appreciate feedback as I'm fed up with the quality of NTL's signal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

Without knowing anything specific about the legalities, I would suggest that if the signal and service in general is poor (which my parents NTL certainly is), then they have not kept their side of the contract, therefore you should not be penalised for trying to get out of it.

Well I finally got around to ordering it this evening and I had to mention the offer to the operator. I went through all of the details etc and he then said that the next available install date would be Tues 25th which I thought would be around 2 weeks away but I have just checked the calender and thats in September. Could it really take that long???
Edit: I also got charge the €45 installation charge. I thought that was free if you have a phoneline already installed. Maybe im wrong.

The €45 is the standard install charge now for Sky and Sky+. An additional charge of €37.50 applies for a No Phone Line install.

Can't believe the install date is that far out? I phoned on Friday last, and my install is due to take place on Monday 20th August (this day next week).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭BFassassin

Well I live in Monaghan but if anything I would think that would quicken things up seeing as there wouldnt be as many subscribers as a big city. Do they send out written confirmation in a few days or should I ring them up again to double check.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,813 ✭✭✭Mr Velo

I assume the date will appear with your T & C's which will arrive with the viewing card. Just in case - i would phone them up again to check.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

Give them a ring mate. Could they have said 'Thursday', 23rd (August)? Or maybe the meant to say Thursday. The girl I spoke to seemed to suggest that it was policy to do all installations within around 10 days..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 829 ✭✭✭standbyme

    Hi there,

I want to ask: all i need is the viewing card from the person who is going to 'introduce me', as they'll probably be pissed off if i get a free sky+ & they get nothing for their trouble!

So probably better off not telling them unless sky are gonna ring them to confirm with them

So any info would be handy before the offer runs out soon.

    Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

They don't ask for the viewing card number in my experience. They will either ask for their Sky customer number or their name and address and get you to verify some of their details (phone number, DOB).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,265 ✭✭✭RangeR

My mother wants to dump NTL [Dublin 9] as the service is atrocious. She saw a friends Sky+ and really liked it.

However, after reading this thread and checking out the sky website, I see no mention of getting the Sky+ box for free. Is this something you have to ring up and push for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭Dr Pepper

It doesn't seem to be advertised on their website. Just ring them and say you want to avail of the 'introduce a friend' offer. The Sky+ box is free, the installation is €45 and the monthly charge is from €21.50 up depending on what channels package you go for (see website). You need a phone line. Easy as that!
