Okay so I guess nowhere in Galway is recommended.

Maybe the best thing would be to make an appointment at Brazilia or Urban Wax for some weekend I am in Dublin?

I've tried a few places in Galway
be a diva - awful, was in pain for a week afterwards
the place out in clarinbridge - really crap wax
marriot absolute spa - really useless wax as well

they're all really provincal and faff about with paper knickers etc. which means that its really just an extended bikini wax and not a particularly good one at that, I mean in fairness having got over my embarresment of brazilians at urban wax in Dublin where they're uber professional I don't need it re-introduced in Galway. You don't get a decent wax a-la urban wax. I've just given up looking and try and make it to urban wax each time I'm in Dublin

If anyone knows of a decent urban wax equivalent in Galway then please post here.

    ah sh***...

cuz i love my waxing too, but always found that galway is lacking good bikini waxing specialists

I've gone to Koztellos a good few times for specialised waxing. No paper knickers problems. I've gone to other places in Galway too, and I've never felt like the waxers were shying away from the job at hand or in any way inept. I've gone to different girls in Koztellos and they all seem well able to do their job. Most of my friends have a particular place that they go for waxing and I' ve never heard of any of them say they'd any major problems.

    where is this koztellos place???

Koztellos have two beauticians in the city, the one I use is in the Galway Shopping centre. But they have one on Foster st. too I think, and in Knocknacarra. They've a good few hairdressers around the city too, as well as Athlone.

Koztellos, didn't go there but someone else did and they said IT WAS CRAP and the normal faffing around with the paper knickers.

best place to go is this tiny little beauticians in woodquay, its really old but the woman does the best bikini line wax ever for just 20euro and shes a sweetheart

Is Bellissimo still open? Any good?

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 206 ✭✭Creachadóir

Well, I went knickerless in Koztellos a few times and it was all as pain-free as the process can be. I thought they were very professional in there. I suppose it depends which beautician you go to, and I've gone to a few of them in there, so I guess you were just unlucky. I've been to that woman in woodquay too for an eyebrow shape and she was great for that, haven't tried her for anything else, but I'll agree she's lovely.

as I said, I didn't actually go there, it was someone else.

However very interesting you obviously got different people as she said
"Had a wax done at Koztellos.

    Urban Wax it is not!!

Really bad, nothing much more than an extended normal wax and they HAD THE PAPER KNICKERS"

Who were the people that looked after you? Do you have their names? When did you last go there? Just wondering if the people that treated you are no longer working there.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 206 ✭✭Creachadóir

I actually don't know the names of the girls, but I went to a few of them last year. However, I haven't been there since Christmas so I can't even check the names. I'm sure that they're still there, they couldn't all have left. I never stuck with the same waxer, not cos they were bad, but because I never had any problem, and I never felt like returning bottomless to the same person. Maybe the process is different in Urban Wax, but all I can say is that it worked well for me and I was knickerless and not in pain and hairfree in a very quick manner. It was the Koztellos in the Galway shopping centre. Maybe times have changed!

If you use the search function on this you'll see that there have been a few threads on this topic before both in this forum and in the Ladies lounge with some good recommendations for specialist waxing places in Galway.

Shelley's on Abbeygate street. I've been to loads of places. They are the best i have tried. Kostello's are crap to mediocre and Bellisimo is only slightly better.

I found the most AMAZING place in Galway. Believe it or not its in the Quality Hotel in Galway. Theres a woman called Angela who has her own salon there and she has to be the best specialised waxer I have yet to meet. When I moved down from Dublin I found it impossible to get anyone that didnt try to kill me. Check her out I cant compliment her enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭Cadiz

When I'm in Galway I go to Fiona in Elizabeth C on Abbeygate St.

It is literally painless - I don't know how she does it, but it is.

I went to Laura in The Powder Room in Knocknacarra on the recommendation of someone on this thread (apologies, can't remember the name:o) and she was AMAZING. I got a hollywood done for me 'olidays and she did a great job. I would highly recommend her and will definitely go back to her.

Hey guys, I know this post is old but I have been living in galway for 8 years and could never find anywhere that did good waxing and by that I mean clean and both front and back hair taken off. But there is a salon in Barrys hairdressers on shop street its called the Beauty Rooms. The girl that does the waxing is so nice and explans exactly what she is goin do and what exactly you want off. paper knickers are optional and she can cover you with a towel if you like. the wax they use is for super sensitive skin and wasnt sore at all well as not sore as waxing can be. She does the back as well and you can go on all fours or just lie on your belly. It was good price to, I had a few things done with them there brazillian, half leg, underarm, eyebrows and tinting all for 60 euro and she painted my nails while the tint was on. :D:D:D:D

I wouldn't touch the beauty rooms (place behind Barry's hair studio) anymore. The girl that worked there was very good, but the owner/manager is useless, totally unprofessional & so rude!! I'd say she's only been at it a few months & doesn't have a clue! It might have been ok before, I think it was re-opened under new management recently. Anyway I'd steer clear, she destroys nails & to be honest wouldn't trust her with waxing. If you're waxed wrong they can take the skin too!! ouch!! Happened to my mother's friend...not pretty.
Elysium was good for a brazillian, they give you disposable underwear and cover you up so you don't feel uncomfortable. It hurt but I think waxing has to, otherwise they don't get the root & it doesn't last as long. Only thing is it's a bit outside Galway. I just decided to get laser treatment in the end....so no more waxing :D

wow there's an awful lot of new members on this thread with only 1post to recommend the best wax in Galway...all for different places and all rave reviews:rolleyes:

I'm very "shy" about waxing and tried DIY at home (disaster!)
went for first bikini wax bout 2yrs ago before my hols. Always got hair done in Koztellos Galway SC so said I'd try their salon cos it was nearby before my hair app...don't know the girls name but she couldn't have made me feel more comfortable and at ease.

She was so chatty and friendly and I can't tell you how much that meant to a bikini wax virgin!!!

Went there few times then once to Elizabeth Cs as I was working and getting it done during lunch, felt very uncomfortable girl was very young and seemed so disinterested

For me the person doing the wax is most important and was very happy with Kozzies...must try lady in Woodquay sometime too

First timer here, new to Galway and have wanted to get "down there" waxed for a long time but always chicken out. Does anyone have any up to date recommendations as this thread goes back quite a while. I'm living in Nnocknacarra, but anywhere around the general city area would do. And being a student I'm all for bargains too :) appreciate any help!

I'd disregard anyone as a first poster, it's only themselves! I swim a lot and my aunt recommended Elysium, unreal. I love it. But it is really expensive!

I've used Sea Breeze in Oranmore for my waxing, and they are brilliant. I always go to a woman call Marcia, she is totally unphased, quick and fun. I recommend them if you're fussy or do I mean fuzzy!!??

Hi, not sure about anyone else who has gone there, but my experience wasn't anything as described above. There was a nice girl there (blonde and smiley) she was very professional and did a very good job - and quick too. I went back a second time to get the same girl. The manager did my shellacs as that girl was no longer there. She had a bit of an attitude and my shellacs only lasted 3 days instead of the 3 weeks I had paid for. She also grew very short when answering the questions I had about after care. I don't think i'll be going back again!!

can't get over the amount of people that have felt compelled to sign up just to give their recommendation for a salon.

Had no idea people were so passionate about waxing:eek::D

Sorry, yes I'm guilty of that. I had googled waxing in Galway and this thread popped up. I registered and then posted, and now know I should have posted in the introductions thread first.
Apologies if I peed anyone off.

Got a fantastic hollywood wax (all off). Was so fast and very professional, knickerless with a towel discreetly placed, does front and back so had to go on all fours for that but was very quick.

    Mod Edited for clarification.

excuse my ignorance, but what's the story with all fours? When I got a brazilian , I didn't go on all fours. My presumption was always that hollywood is all hair taken off & brazilian is everything off except for the "landing strip" at the front! :D
I found the brazilian didn't quite get everything underneath, but I was given disposable undies. Did I ask for the wrong treatment??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

It should have gotten everything off.

All fours is (from my experience) when they make sure your bum is waxed properly.

I'd a feeling that was the case, she bent my legs back while I was lying down, so she got most of it, but not quite all of it, but I was a bit too shy to ask "eh should I be on all fours for this?!"!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,390 ✭✭✭Stench Blossoms

I think it's the preference of the beautician as well. The first time i was told to get on all fours I thought I was going to die of embaressment.

Went to Elysium in Moycullen and as a waxing virgin I was terrified! It was brilliant and as painless as can be! Lady was really kind and well used to removing hair without fuss. Used hot wax and out in 45 mins, defo would go back again :D

I just had my first ever wax in Uptown Girl above the Cellar and I cannot recommend it enough. Amanda is lovely and really puts you at ease and I can honestly say it didn't hurt a bit. A regular bikini wax was only €15, I will definitely be back!

I've referred to this post a few times for advice so feel only fair to give my feed back. I tried Wish Beauty Salon in Knocknacarra on basis of above recommendations, had my first ever Brazilian there. However I had nothing to compare with. I took two panadol before hand (can't recommend this highly enough), of course if you could also take two glasses of wine should feel nothing. It went well, embarrassing, not my finest hour but then which of us has our finest hour during this process. Over the next 3 months, returned two more times, different girls each time. My feedback, 2 very good, 1 alright.

However having heard so much about Brazilia felt I had to give it a try, see what we were missing, so went to Sandymount branch one day I was in Dublin. Wax was excellent but girl was soooo cold, there was a TV on to save her having to talk to you. I had no idea daytime TV was so bad and I was getting mad at some stupid discussion on TV and left wound up, alot poorer, little change out of €100 for full leg, Brazilian and underarm but very smooth and not a mark.

Next appointment, I was back in Galway, I was going to go to Wishes again but traffic now with road repairs in Westside is a disaster and I decided to check out Elysium in Moycullen as I am on that side of city. I was lying on bed when I realised I had forgotten to take my panadol, disaster! But all good, some pain but quite efficient, no marks and not too expensive €69 for full leg, Brazilian and underarm. I think I might try them again.

Still dreaming of some place that makes it a half pleasureable experience but I dont think that exists.

I had to look for a new beauticians after my usual waxing place closed down. Went to look for a new one and it was so difficult, as most of the reviews online were outdated. So, instead, I opted for the traditional route and asked around at different beauticians. I had one requirement: they had to have hard wax; the one that goes onto the skin, wait for it to dry and rip it off. The wax pulled off with paper strips method was something I was in no way willing to try for the duration of a hollywood waxing as I'd heard it was much more painful.

Fortunately, I went to Uptown Girl and Amanda (the owner) explained to me the wax she uses for the bikini area. This is when I learnt that the hot wax beauticians had been using on me for the past 4 years was not the proper wax for down there.

At first I was a little apprehensive of using any other type of wax, especially one that involved a strip to remove the wax. Amanda explained that she uses a warm wax specific to waxing the bikini area and assured me that it's better than the hard wax. So I made an appointment and this lady is very in demand, so make sure you book it in advance.

I arrived for my appointment and I prepared myself for pain, mostly because I had left it so late since my last waxing; it was always the worst when I left it too long with the hard wax. But with the wax used at Uptown girl she said it wasn't a problem. And she was right.

The wax used is a lavender coloured warm wax and the strips are excellent quality, as they're made of a soft material. All in all, it was less painful than the hard wax; the least painful wax I have ever experienced. I couldn't believe how quick it was, I was finished in 15 minutes rather than the usual 30mins and my hair is pretty strong. Better still, the finish was excellent, as I got up to get changed I expected to be removing those lumps and strings of hard wax that remain after my normal wax. However, with the wax at Uptown Girl there was NO waxing residue, it was so clean. Also the hairs were gone; I ALWAYS ask for a hollywood, I ask for all the hair gone and I never get it. Usually there's bits of hair that beauticians miss or that the hard wax just cannot get at. It's been well over a month since I got my last wax and I've made another appointment for next week.

In summary, Uptown Girl is the best waxing place to go in Galway. The beautician Amanda is efficient and super friendly; she's fabulous and a great distraction against the little pain that existed.

I hope this helps those in search of a good waxing place in Galway.
