Enjoyed it because it was simply 2-3 classic episodes recycled into a feature length story (Scorpio, Homer has visions and Bigger Brothers)

Isn't there already about 13 or so threads started for this exact purpose?

Not for this exact purpose. Theres a preview thread and a review thread. This looks like a general thread. A pointless one all the same. It's a decent film. Some good laughs. It's worth the money but I agree it's just recycled episodes. Spider Pig is the only really great thing out of it. Walking down the street yesterday I heard a little girl singing 'spider pig, spider pig' :D It was very cute.

I've seen it and it is funnier than anything they have done for several years!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

    So is a dead cat.

But yeah, just recycled episodes. Especially the whole thing about Bart joining the Flanderseseseses.

    By the way, the whole
    "Bart's penis"
    thing was unexpected.

Just back from it now. Definitely the best stuff from the simpsons i've seen in years:D

By the way, the whole Spoiler:

    I thought
him knocking back a bottle of whiskey was stranger

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Oh god yeah, I completely forgot about that! That was much stranger. I mean
we've seen Bart drunk in the series before but this was much more serious in tone.

It wouldn't have been hard though in fairness but all the same i thought it was great! i think becuase the standard of the tv episodes had gone down hill was why i found it so good! i thought it put some recent episodes to shame!!!

haven't bothered with the last batch of episodes, since the show has gone to high hell. i will go see the movie though... a friend of mine went to it last night and said he was disappointed though, which is unfortunate. all they needed to do was get back some of their old writers and churn out a classic, then kill the series on a high note.

I found it ok. As someone said, it was a few episodes rehashed into 80 mins. What was most disappointing however was the lack of input from other Simpsons characters, and that a lot of the action is away from Springfield. My favourite character Mr Burns gets about 2 lines in it.

did this really happen is there a cinema in Springfield Ireland?

Funniest bits were the in-jokes such as
The ambulance crashed into the tree at the top of Springfield Gorge when Homer and Bart are jumping over it on the motorbike. I chuckled on my own in a cinema full of 8 year olds.

yeah it was on the gerry ryan show. some politician wanted to do it.....

It was alright. I certainly wont be rushing to buy it on dvd.

It had a few laughs, but to be honest the glory days of the simpsons is over, the new episodes just dont cut it anymore, well not for the lasy 4 or 5 years for me anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,739 ✭✭✭Jello

I enjoyed it - some pretty funny moments but I certainly wasn't wetting myself with laughter at any stage.

    The animation was excellent though.

    7.5/10

the spoiler that bigkev mentioned was my favourite bit of the film.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,026 ✭✭✭Killaqueen!!!

Spider-pig was the best bit and I had already by accident seen it before going in! :( Still funny though.
The weird boob lady was hilarious too

    Classic simpsons.

Was expecting it to be funnier though :(

Was it just me that thought that the animation was very late 90's ??? I watched the entire 18th season recently and that was a lot better in every respect.

The mixture of 2d and 3d animation was awful in places and really spoiled the movie for me.

I thought the 3d stuff was very poor aswell. I don't know if it just doesn't translate to the big screen well, but it looked really shoddy compared to the stuff you'd see on TV (say futurama for example).

I thought the movie was good on the whole. It wasn't a return to form. It was definitely front loaded, and the waned towards the end. But it had enough laughs in it to satisfy me.

I have never been a big fan of The Simpsons and after watching a few of the recent episodes my expectations were as low as they could go. Have to admit that I was pleasently surprised, while not a great film it had a few decant gags which carried it.Shame the focus was almost entirely on the Simpsons, the truely funny characters got about a dozen lines between them.

How it took 12 writers over a hundred rewrites is beyond me.

Just back from it, enjoyed it. The animation was a bit patchy alright but excellent most of the way through I thought. Lots of bits from some of the older episodes.

Watched this tonight and thought it was abominable.
What were the writers thinking ?
The Simpsons used to be the best show on tv now its an embarrassment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

I used to love The Simpsons.. but like most of you haven't watched really it for the last 6 or 7 years.

The movie was very average - it felt far too slap-sticky and not particularly clever slapstick.

    Unfortunate really! :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 969 ✭✭✭sunzz

Watched it liked it.. 7/10 least it was a SLIGHT return to form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭purplegeko

I just saw it last night. It was ok very funny in parts, slightly funny in parts and distinctly average in other parts. I got bored 40mins in, maybe thats my threshold for the simpsons. I would give it 7/10 but would tell my friends to wait for the dvd.

Just got back from it and must say I actually very much enjoyed it. Sure the jokes were hit and miss, but there was some absolute stunners in there that had be in bits:
the nudity gag being the funniest thing Ive seen in ages, the Tom Hanks bit was excellent (especially the end credits bit), the toying with beloved gags (steady...steady, the gorge jump etc...) clever
    .

Along with maybe Ocean's Thirteen, it was the most fun Ive had at the cinema this summer - one full of disapointments. Sure, it is easy to criticise - weaker second half, minor characters only getting minimal lines (but how did you expect them to fit the plethora of characters into a >90 minute film?). I may not be as big a fan of the Simpsons now as I once was (although I still count the peak seasons as the best animation TV has ever produced outside of Futurama) but I was not disapointed. Great fun, and tbh that's what I expected
    8/10

I watched it on Sunday night. It was ok, some great lines and funny scenes. But there was something missing. The first half was the best and I would have prefered if
Mr Burns had a decent role in the movie instead of that government agent and McBain should have been president , not Arnie

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 423 ✭✭Petey2006

Disappointing at best. All the best bits were in the trailer. Thoughts are in my website in my sig.

To come back to this .. Im just listening to the Ian Dempsey podcast and
they are reviewing the Simpsons movie .. this guy LOVES the film .. LOVES it !!!

I mean .. he must be being paid by FOX or the irish cinema network...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    or he loved it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

I always think those strangely positive radio reviews happen because the host feels he needs something to say and it's easier to think of chatter when you're being positive (basically you just run through anything funny in the film and then laugh). Radio sucks enough without that crap.

God, I thought it was terrible.

I went in there expecting complete drivel because of the last 8-9 years or so of the show and was pleasantly surprised. I thought there was some good gags in there, although it did just feel like a few episodes rolled into 1 extra long one. I mean nearly everything in the film, is something we've seen already on the show.
I think it would have been better if we saw a bit more of Ralph, Chief Wiggum, Moe, Barney, Professor Frink, Apu, Mr. Burns, Krusty, etc. I mean honestly, they must have only gotten about one line each. Don't think Skinner had a single line, which I thought was extremely weird.
I think I was most dissapointed that they didn't make better use of the show's background characters. I know it's called 'The Simpsons', but there was far too much focus on the family itself.
Hopefully if they feel the need to make another film it will be "The Simpsons presents A Ralph Wiggum Story" and I also hope that the series will end so. It has been done to death at this stage.
Overall I'll give the film a 5/10, because it was funny, but honestly not good enough to be charging us money for it.

Saw it the other night and was a bit let down. A lot of the best bits were on the ads and despite a strong start it quickly became dull with the odd good joke breaking the tone. One review I read had the statistics of so many redrafts, so many writers, two years to write alone and this was the best they could come up with.

As was said, they should have used more of the already established characters more instead of focussing on the family completely. And
I was annoyed Spiderpig, easily the highlight of the film, vanished for the second half. But I read he'll be in the new season!

Does anybody remember what happened to Spider Pig in the movie? I woke up in the middle of the night about 1 week after watching the Simpsons movie and I could not remember what happened to Spider Pig. Methinks that he dissappeared out of the movie without any explanation

After they try to escape the mob and Spider Pig pushes the plank letting them fall he vanishes. But as was said in my other post he'll be back in the new season of the simpsons so maybe they'll address what happened to him.

Yep, I agree, this was good but I've seen better episodes. Maybe they'll realise it in time for a sequel?

Matt Groening on the future of the Simpsons:
    "No end in sight".

Suffice to say, I'm not very enthusiastic.

I though most of the funniest parts were in the trailers/ad's....having said that i haven't been a big Simpson's fan for the last few years so i may be a bit bias

    The trailer was funnier.

worth going to see, raised a good few chuckles, but was nothing compared to the likes of 'blades of glory' 'anchorman' 'zoolander' etc.
The first time ive laughed at a simpsons joke since series 9-thats a sad reflection on how bad the tv show has become

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

And even then, all those jokes were seen in the trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,112 ✭✭✭Dacelonid

Saw this recently and all I could think throughout the whole film was "meh". I mean it was alright, but nowhere near as good as some of the earlier episodes. It was like a new episode drawn out into 90 minutes or whatever.
I blame sky though. If the Simpsons wasn't on for about 4 hours every day, then maybe it would have been fresher and seemed funnier somehow.
I guess overall it was a worthwhile way to pass 90 minutes or so, but I wouldn't be bothered seeing it again.

    I thought it was okayish.

It was quite scandalous for a PG movie though. Suicide, bestality, full frontal nudity, pre-teen drinking, child strangling, like wtf

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

Ya I was also supried it got a PG cert.
If it had not been an animated movie I think there would be a good chance it would get an 18 cert in this country.
