    Hi all,

i was thinking of getting a personal trainer to try and maximise my dedication and chances of making my personal goals. Everybody knows that motivation is a key problem when trying to lose weight etc so it is something that I think would help a lot.

Has anybody got any ideas on what to do?

I have heard good things about www.focusfitness.ie in particular.

Any ideas? I am looking to lose weight and tone up to gain some deifinition.

    Cooper-Man,

I've been a personal trainer for the past 10 years so maybe I can offer some advice.

First of all, bear in mind that motivation is ultimately your responsibility. Obviously, you'll go to the gym when you've got a trainer waiting for you and you'll lose your money if you don't show up. However, the real role of the personal trainer is to help you get great results. THAT'S what really motivates you.

You need to meet your trainer halfway and be already motivated enough to put in the required work both inside the gym (exercise) and outside the gym (nutrition and sleeping). Any good personal trainer will be pissed off if you're not getting great results and will be willing to fire you if you're not doing what's required. That's what I do and it's a rather unique and very effective way to motivate them to get results. It's not what people are used to because they believe that since it's their money, they can call all the shots. Uh-Uh! The personal trainer is the "coach", the client is the "athlete" who does what the coach says.....

Unfortunately, many trainers simply take the money, chatting about what was on TV last night, while their client runs on a threadmill. That's not personal training, that's babysitting.

Regarding FocusFitness, I've heard nothing but good things about their Krav Maga courses. I'm actually going to get in touch with Aidan regarding the possibility of hosting a seminar at The Fitness Dock.

    Hope that helps.

    PAUL

I would agree with everything Paul said there. I have heard good things about that company and if it's close to you give them a shout!

You need to be partially motivated to suceed yourself....the trainer will not be with you all day!

Remember, be open and honest with your trainer about dietary slip ups and things of that nature. You might be paying for a service, but they are investing time, experience , effort and energy in helping you suceed and they deserve your honesty.

A trainers client base is the greatest advertisement they have, and if you are not doing what you should they deserve to know if they want to continue working with you.

Paul, thanks a million for the reply, at least I know I can here it from a reputable source.

With regards motivation, i find myself VERY motivated. At the moment I am visiting the gym perhaps 4-5 time per week BUT i dont know if i am doing the right things my body needs. I also have a strict diet for the last 2 weeks which involves small meals 3 times per day. I know that the less but often approach is perhaps more successfull but i need some guidance. I have cut out all snacking, fizzy drinks, sweets etc etc etc. Although I am seeing some very small weight loss, i am determined to be 'guided' in the right direction.

Dragan, thanks for the advice also. I agree completely with the honesty aspect but at the end of the day, i would only be lieing to myself which is not something worthwhile really!

Can anybody reccomend any training course/people to contact? If anyody is our there willing to come up with a package can they please contact me!

    Thanks again
