playing live 1/2 the other night:

I crai on a draw and crack AA (as per usual)

the dealer is pushing the pot towards me and says "thankyou"

    i'm a bit taken aback/peeved/shocked

(i am winning, but this is the 1st winning hand he has dealt me - he's only been at the table 5 mins)

I collect the pot and stack them accondingly, he looks at he and says "thankyou" again

How the fk do you play that one????

I always thought that the norm was to tip the dealer when you left the table (I've never played a live cash game with dealers, sorry)

    Tip the dealer

I never wait until I have my chips stacked until I tip. In fact, I usually throw a tip in when I am mucking my cards. In this lads case it sounds like he was being a cheeky cnut, so €1 was enough for him.

Eh, he is being rude, he can fook off.

I can't stand this tipping blindly thing.

I wouldn't tip him, sounds like he is been a right cheeky little fu*ker. I can't stand that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,615 ✭✭✭Mr.Plough

    i wouldn't tip him now.

although when im involved in a pot and win it, sometimes i forget to tip, sheerly due to the fact i was concentrating on the hand. then il realise like 5 hands later and think "fook it'll look stupid if i throw him chips now", and just wait until the next pot, which could well be 2 hours away because im such a nit. will this give you a rep as a scrooge non tipper?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 375 ✭✭kebabfest

I usually give a tip, but not always. In this situation I wouldnt tip this dealer again during this session. What a w@nker. The whole point about tipping is that it is optional. Like in restaurants NEVER feel obliged to tip.

I'm going slightly off topic now (apologies in advance), but how about tippin in tournaments where the chips are only in play in the tournament, James Bond tipped the dealer a fortune but it wasn't taken out of his winnings in the end :)

    Lol, tipping in a tournament.
    Just tip if you win.

    Lol, tipping in a tournament.

That's what I do, I normally give around 5%, i.e. if I win a grand I'll give 50 yoyos over, nothing for second.

Actually had a very funny (had to be there) side bet going on at a charity tournament before, the prize fund was €5750 for first and we were betting on how much the winner would give to charity. An older gentleman (that no-one likes) ended up winning, took the money and left.

This same gentleman has taken me out of play calling my all-in when I had AK (he had 3s that stood up) and when I made a set to a flushed flop, he had the 5 and was drawing another club to win (he hit). It was late stages of the game btw and I knew he didn't have the flush (he had K 5 off)

it was in waterford (and not in blazin aces!!) - it's a real pity coz i like the place, but the owners have there heads firmly up their arses

i didn't tip of course, nor did i tip when i left with my winnings

i generally don't tip much during a game - the odd time i tip a few quid after a hand - depending on a couple of factors. I do however tip very generously imo when i finish playing (if i've got something to tip!)

it was brought to the attention of one of the owners when i cashed out - he didn't think that his dealer was in any way at fault!!!!

nobody should ever feel under any obligation to tip EVER!!

i see time and time again, muppets buying in for €100, winning a bit, tipping 30/40 quid over a couple of hours, loosing, and leaving with zero

anyways i'm looking forward to my next visit - i probably wont be tipping again, and enjoyng it too!!

    [cash games]
Most people tip when they win a (sizeable) pot. Others at the end when they leave (if tips are shared amongst the staff). Then there are those that don't tip at all. This is actually good. It keeps the dealers friendly. In the United states there is this mentality that you must tip because "its normal". I hate that. I always tip if the staff is nice and never tip if the staff is nasty and then the regular 5% tip when I leave otherwise.

A similar situation happened me. I got fed up of it after a couple of hands and despite not being in the hand in question I openly asked him to give up the hard sell on the tips - that everyone at the table knew how to do it already. Then I threw him a couple of euro. A few of the others at the table nodded and threw in a couple of quid and he shut up.

It sounds like the dealer may have been cueing Bops to tip because he doesn't. I have played with players playing for their 1st time in a casino who wouldn't think to tip unless it was somehow conveyed to them in a way. I actually think a dealer should intimate to a non-tipper that tipping is expected. Just bloody tip for God's sake, dealing is a tipping job, it's not their fault if you don't win money at the end of the night, why scew them over.

However if the dealer were doing it consistently when tipping was normal they should be told where to go.

Just because something is voluntary as a courtesy doesn't mean people should avoid it just because they can. If nobody tipped then rake would be bumped up across the board, it works on the honour system. I would say that virtually no competent dealer would do that job on their basic wage before tips. I'm a serial overtipper in life generally because I cannot reconcile sticking huge sums of money into a pot on a bluff and then shafting someone out of a tip of a few quid at another point.

Myabe you had to be there to appreciate the precise nature of it. I've never witnessed a dealer getting out of line in respect of tips.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭Theresalwaysone

Personally Bops, I think you were right not to tip here if you didn't. I can't believe he was cheeky enough to suggest you tip him.

I tip friendlier dealers more. I give unfriendly dealers with unhappy mugs on there faces less tips.

You are never harassed for tips in a restaurant. And to be honest I believe that work is much harder than sitting dealing for a length of time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,124 ✭✭✭NickyOD

    bops wrote:

Because dealers do a difficult and often thankless job during unsocial hours and are underpaid, Also if everyone takes your approach then dealers demand higher wages and casinos hike the rake to compensate. Then we end up like some of the casinos on the continent where cash games tables are basically giant sinks where everyone's cash circles the table eventually draining down a big hole and only idiots will play live cash games because it's impossible to beat the rake. I wouldn't tip a dealer who acted like this, but I'm assuming he acted that way with you because he's realsied you never tip and wants to get the message across.

Bops, Do you tip at restaurants?

Bops you filthy bum :) , those filthy Italians deserve no tips anyway ;)

seriously though this you dont have to tip attitude is a cop out. if a dealer is efficient and polite they deserve to be tipped. also i think its cheap when people only tip at then end of the night. id tip 1 or 2 euros for every pot i win and give whatever loose chips i have when cashing out to the dealer as well

Dealer: C'mon, throw in a buck!

    Bops: Uh-uh, I don't tip.

    Dealer: You don't tip?

Bops: Nah, I don't believe in it.

Dealer: You don't believe in tipping?

Seat 1: You know what these dealers make? They make ****.

Bops: Don't give me that. He don't make enough money then he can quit.

Dealer: I don't even know a ****ing Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you don't ever tip?

Bops: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, you're just doing your job.

Seat 1: Hey, our dealer is nice.

Bops: He's okay. He isn't anything special.

Seat 1: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?

Bops : I'd go over twelve percent for that.

I saw a dealer doin that once, she had just started, pushed a pot to a guy and said thank you and looked at him. He got pretty embarressed and started rabitting on, "i always tip, i was going to tip". He left pretty quick in a huff, no reason to tout for tips.

What sort of tip should you give in a self deal tournament?

At the risk of starting a debate that people mightn't like, I've a feeling that this issue is much worse with newer casinos outside Dublin than in the capital itself. When I started paying in the Merrion/Fitz, tipping seemed to be the norm, although I'm sure that there were a few stingy bastards. A couple of years ago I started playing in a casino in the midlands, and the rate of tipping was embarrassingly low. I remember starting a few arguments about it (at risk to my own safety!), and I think the issue really was one about not realising that tipping is the correct etiquette, in Ireland at least.

To be fair, these days it has improved considerably in this particular casino, so I think it's just a case of people copping on.

I think in general the dealer would be out of order, but its very annoying dealing well into the early hours, see someone get lucky win a massive pot and not even throw the dealer a euro. Bops sounds like one of those guys who are simply too tight to tip imho. If you were a good tipper this would never have happened, and ive no sympathy for non-tippers.
Also agreed with earlier poster there wouldnt be any dealers if they only got min wage.

Thats rubbish, i have seen many very competent dealers not get a penny, the worst i have ever seen was down in waterford where only one guy at the table was tipping, and this wasnt just one table it was most of them.

Think it was out of order for the dealer to try and get you to tip Bops, (everyone knows your a tight fisted little git anyway!!!!)

Seriously though, dealers have other ways of reminding the patrons at the table about tipping.

I tip regularly and note that if I join a table and there a new people there (some not tipping) when the dealer gets a tip he taps the chip loudly on the table, (A) thanking the player for the tip and (B) reminding every else to tip.

We have ran over this before, Just Tip for f*ck sake. Do you tip the waitress/waiter for the glass of coke or mineral or tea, well tip the dealers, or else the tournaments and cash games, will end up self deal. This "im not doing it cause im supposed to" comments just annoys the sh*t out of me.
