excercise junkie...

i have recently been unofficially classed as an active junkie, which i have to agree is a very relevant statement about me.

Im a canoeist, and when in training eat, drink and sleep canoeing, but i recently injured my back and have been out of training for a month (last summer i broke my ankle.... was out for two) but i cant stand it.

here's my question, i can't run, the pain is too bad. But i went for a cycle today, and my avg heart rate was 170, which im happy with, the cycle was 24k, but i need to be able to paddle that by august, and i cant train for at least another two weeks, would participation in any excercise where i can keep my heart rate at that allow for me to be fit enough for the event in august, even if the strength isnt there?

I still want to race, but dont want to embarass myself, so how good are things like cycling and swimming for keeping up a general fitness? can be doing alot of swimming over the next two weeks but am worried that when i get in the kayak my bod wont know what hit it!! any advice???
