For anyone who interested the public are able to join this gym but the numbers are limited, offer is closing soon as I was told. The cost works out at 365 for the year plus a joining fee of 50. I just joined myself, looks pretty impressive. They also run alot of classes at reasonable prices anyway heres a link.

shhhhh, it's crowed enough as it is and will only get worse when the students come back. THis year they are going to have free membership. I predict a nighmare in October :-(

I assume you go there after work hours hunnymonster?

Its pretty dead anytime I go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

sangre I practically live there. I go at different times. 5-8 is pretty busy and there is usually a wait for a weight! Pool can be over busy at lunchtime too.

There's a pool in it now?!? Wow... when I used to use it it was just like some machines in a big room. That's impressive. Glad to see students are getting free membership, though I guess all those that paid the levy have left.

I presume people who have paid the levy down the years and graduated can still get membership in future even if/when this sells out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,211 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Its not free, its just included in registration next year for everyone at a reduced rate.

I try to finish before lunch so I can avoid that rush as well. Although even when I went once after 6 the weights weren't that bad. Had to wait few minutes for a bench at one point but that was it.

You in trinity hunnymonster? Im postgrad at moment.

I also predict a nightmare in October. But I hope it will ease off when some newbies realise that there is actually hard work associated with this whole fitness thing. I'll just avoid Monday mornings when people are feeling guilty about their weekends indulgence and early evening when lectures are over. After Christmas will also be a crowded time for obvious reasons.
I think that the people responsible for the gym have messed up though by opening it to the public because this is largely based, I'd say on how many use the gym during the summer. They probably think 'ah sure we can squeeze a few more bodies in and make a few quid at the same time'. If it wasn't for the new leg press I'd consider joining UCD's gym.
Ah well I'm off soon to break my own 'don't go to the gym in the early evening rule'. :)

UCD gym isnt great tbh, free weights section is usually a state, the weights are v difficult to discern what they are and it gets pretty packed in the evening time tbh.

yeah for the moment I'm on the payrole. Curently job hunting a bit further south though.

I go there regularly enough. Sangre if you need some one to spot you and you're going in the evenings, drop me a Pm.

I don't really predict it getting bad, maybe for a week or two, then back to normal. However, a lot of stuff already seems to be out of order.

New gym in TCD is terrible in my opinion. There is not enough of anything. I hate it. Its so cramped. And hot and full of broken things. The rowing machines never even get the batteries replaced.

And you should not have to pay to go there. For years all students paid a levy waaayyyyy before the registration fee ever came in based on the proviso that when it was built eveyone could join free. Plus a chunk of the current reg fee goes to paying for it. So everyone having to pay to go to the gym as a student now (i heard that is the case but am not sure) is just paying for the gym twice. Which makes no sense to me.

iv grad membership and dont think i'll be renewing it come october, even though iv used tcd gym for a few years now. for an extra €200 you could join somewhere that might actually be open over the xmas hols (last xmas the gym closed down for 2 weeks), and somewhere where the equipment gets fixed occasionally. the leg press was broken for aaages. and yeah, the heat can be unbearable sometimes :( it's disappointing tbh because with all the money they invested they could have done a really good job :(

Thats amazing mate, as the new gym wasn't finished last christmas and opening horus have significantly improved.

sorry i obviously meant the old gym closed down over xmas, but i imagine the same could happen this year, even with the new gym? i doubt theyl be open on december 27th...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Well this is about the new gym, not the old. I can't imagine to mainy place open on december 27th, let alone gyms.

I wonder where the pec deck went. I kicked that machines ass. A decent gym should have the proper equipment.

Does anyone know if there are locks on the lockers in trinity gym or do we have to bring our own?

Ya can buy them at the desk, they were a tenner back when I got mine. A lot of people don't bother and just stash their stuff in the changing room. Wouldn't recommend that though!
