Just gone and ordered a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR to join my 300mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S, tha tmay soon be for sale.

Albert at kea couldn't ge tme one nor could UR Galaxy so had to go with Digital Rev.

Expect to get caught for the VAT as they are using DHL but still €1k cheaper than any store in Ireland quoted me.

A serious lens for serious money.(€4k?) Damn the expense. Enjoy. Let us know if you're stung for duty. I recently got a Canon 17-40L from Albert. Shipped by Fedex. No duty.

I bought the same lens last month. I got mine from Hong Kong Supplies on eBay . It's a fantastic lens, heavy so a monopod helps. Most of the recent zoo pics where taken with this lens are on my flickr.

Any time I've ordered from Digital Rev I've been stung for VAT. It does make a difference.

Yes you're mad. Certifiable. You're in good company though...

As I said i expect to be caught for the VAT bringing the cost up to close to €4k but I think it's worth it. My "speciality" is sports snapping and want to explore this side more.

I had ordered it from two other hong kong based ebay sites but they both came back to say it was on backorder. ( Don't understand why they would do it and then have ebay charges) and offered to repay the money immediately or wait until stock arrived. Albert at Kea was more forthcoing telling me he hadn't a chance of picking one up within the next six months at a minimum

The shops in Dublin were similar saying they'd have to order it from Nikon UK and it could be a few weeks, even months before delivery if it was available and that it would be full RRP of €4999.

stark raving. If I ever get so serious about this lark that I end up buying gear costing anywhere near that much, please lock me up.

Having said that, you seem to know what you like so good luck with it ! I hope it brings you great joy

    LOL

No the real reason is I can't let the Corkman ge tone over on me :D

had I ever the opportunity to do some paid regular sports or events shooting, I'd buy the canon equivalent without delay. Any excuse to buy it/justify it. Sadly, I think I may be without it for quite some time yet.

Hence my purchase. I do get paid, primarily as a sports reporter.

The snapping came about as I decided I could probably get better pics than the allocated snapper. They arrive at the event, take a few and are off again so quality or content of photos wasn't always the best.

For personal reasons I had to give up full time work and now only do freelance and there's more money to be made at the snapping rahte rthan the writing

Even when I was shooting with a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super II, you still couldn't get near the kind of images I capture!
No amount of f/2.8s are going to save you! :p
By the way, I can't make the Odense game. :(

Who wants to capture Rico, Jonno, Georgie? Not me

    Shame about Odense.

BTW from emails with Digital Rev it looks like they too do not have the item in stock.

That's really sly, tell them to throw an extra 100mm on the end to compensate for the inconvenience :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,272 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

Digital Rev will ship most stuff (but not everything) to Ireland. But it's highly likely you'll be stung for VAT.

Albert (albert@keaphoto.com) is well worth contacting. I've never had an issue with his supplies and never been caught for VAT.

no looking required.. get yourself a copy of the subway map. There's a stop on the green line (iirc) that's only like 2 or 3 blocks away from B&H :D

Send your friend off shopping and hop on the subway :D

Oh I know the street and everything, checked there website and then google earth. Just it might be a different story when I get there, consulting a map in your bed room is easy.

tis quite... I remember doing the same before I went over. Was staying up near the Lincoln centre so thankfully the subway line ran all the way from practically outside the apartment right down to B&H. Convenient for getting all those expensive purchases back in one piece.

your probably stark raving mad - seems to be a gear frenzy on at the moment, wonder has it anything to do with the lack of sunshine? I'm looking at something myself something good for portrait/wedding type of thing very spendy tho!! my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens will have to go to fund it.
    and

your scared of e-bay and not of trudging around New York with thousands of euros worth of stuff hanging off ya? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

trial by fire tbh... I walked around the edge of central park at midnight with a very large apple store bag hanging off my shoulder. Nothing like a bit of percieved danger to get the juices flowing :D

Have you tried Hong Kong Supplies? This is who I bought mine from and they have it shown in stock.

    Nikon 300mm f/2.8 AF-S VR

No but can't go anywhere else until Digital Rev refund my money.

Strangely! they have become very shy at answering the emails yet before I ordered had relpies within minutes". The telephone support number in the UK is an absolute waste of time and call charges.

*I am allowing for the time difference but they are a 24/7 operation according to one of the people I spoke to today on the support line.

ordered a camera on 26th june from digital rev, shipped today...must have sent about 100 emails, often waited 3/4 days for a response. Got a refund from them, got screwed over on the exchange rate during the refund then they never got my second payment until about the 5th email with the paypal details...whatever could go wrong has gone wrong, now i am just waiting to get stung for tax and for the camera not to work...i jest you not..

Popped my B&H cherry 2 weeks ago, holy gawd what a place! Got my Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 and walked out of the place in a cold sweat at having spent so much money (well, for me anyway. It's not €4k tho).

We sat across the road from it in a Subway for lunch and then I noticed that pretty much all the folk milling around the block, or walking from the block, or walking TO the block had either a camera or a B&H bag... It's more like a dollar-printing factory.

    B.

No stock confirmed and refund within three days.

(Also questioned who was going to pay the ebay listing and sales fee - Not me for sure)

I think eBay should be informed that they're listing items, which they don't have to sell. You'll get done on transaction fees, simply because of the sellers incompetence!

Didn't get charged the transaction fee but the currency exchange spread between the payment and the refund hit my pocket for €160.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭soccerc

    WooHoo

It's on it's way via Fedex from one of the sellers who originally didn't have it in stock despite listing it. They mailed to tell me lens was now back in stock.

Now all I have to worry about is VAT. Still I will be a saving of a minimum of €500 if VAT imposed on the best price I could get in ireland from a brick and mortar store. (6-8 week minimum lead time).

4 large, it must be for work right ? can't imagine dropping 4 large for just a hobby, you must be single too surely the wife would kill you. I would imagine the company makes huge money out of these things, I mean it's only a little lens and it costs near as much as a car ? they probably see ~3500 profit on each one sold
