Training Recommendations

    Hi Folks,

I was just wondering if anyone here plays 5-aside soccer? I started playing with work and I might aswell be a statue on the pitch. I am nowhere near the required fitness level for the game and I want to get better. Can anyone recommend certain exercises etc? I think suicides would be quite appropriate but then I could be wrong.

Also if anyone plays is there a particular type of ball for astro-turf pitces like a training ball etc or is a regular leather ball ok?

Can you tell me what they are?

I'm no expert but maybe try a routine that basketball players use (not the throwing part obviously.)
Basketball involves a lot of footwork and stop/sprint actions so I'd imagine it'd be pretty similar to 5 a side football.

I've trained a few football teams and have used the following.

    Interval Sprints.

Sprint from one end of the pitch to the other,
Walk back to the starting line (this serves as your rest).
    Repeat 10 times.

Many soccer players jog long distances, attempting to get fit. This is perfect for marathon running but football is very stop-start. All out effort followed by sub-maximal effort.

    Interval Rowing

I'd also highly recommend training on a Concept 2 rower in a gym. Rugby League players (who are VERY fit) do 45 minute interval rowing sessions. It hits upper and lower body in a way that no other exercise does. Just look at the Olympic rowers at the end of their races - they're dying!

What's your fitness program like at the moment (if any)? Many people take up football to get fit and then find out you need to be fit to play it in the first place!

    Hi Guys,

    Cheers for the feedback,

@PAUL/FITNESS DOCK I have no fitness programme at the moment at all, Ive put on about a stone or more in the past year from driving to work and not getting any real exercise. Next week I will be switching to getting the train which is about 4miles walk every day, that should slim me down a bit over time but I'd want to increase my cardio fitness level via 5-a-side soccer.
