    Deep Stack Tournament
    Blinds 75:150 Average Stack 8500
I have 10000 and Villian (SB) has 15000.
I am in the cut-off and have been very quite so far and have played 2 or 3 hands only while SB and BB are in most pots and both have more or less doubled their starting stacks.
I get 10h8h and raise to 450 - button folds and both of the Blinds call.

    Flop comes 10 - 8 - 3 rainbow
    Check - Check - I bet 1000
SB who has a reputation as quite an agressive player raises to 2750 and BB folds - I go into the bank for about 2 minutes and then call.

Turn 3 putting 2 spades on the board
SB asks how much I have behind, I say about 7k and he announces ALL IN

    I......

what range of hands do you think you are against, and against this range why is a raise all in on the flop better than calling? What are you worried about on the turn?

I had to post this hand hector i just thought it was the most interesting I've played for a while

No problem at all! It was quite interesting. Ill give my thoughts later.

well, if i was in his shoes, knowing that u have been very quite for a while and you raise. i'd put you on a strong Ace. therefore the bet on the flop was a continuation bet. therefore, if he had A3, or even 79 J9, and reraises you here, he would think that you would fold?

the fact that you floped top 2 pair, you have to think what has he got - if he has an open end draw - do you want to take the chance on the turn if say a Q or 6 or if an A comes.

there is also the possibility that he has he same has as you, as any other hand he would have reraised you pre flop, accordingly to ur read on him. i.e A10. therefore unless its a total bluff he's not that far behind you. but as you are aware, there's no subsitute to being in the position of sitting there with him.

as for the turn card, being a spade, he could possible have 97 /J9 of spades, and unless imo you have a big hand you probably wouldn't call, especially after the board paired.

a rock raises pf and fires the flop, and you dont put an overpair in his range?

yea but u can get a feel for it, if your sitting there, and obv the SB didn't put him on an overpair.

Ive just noticed that the action is slightly wrong, the original raiser (me!) was two off the button. The button called as did the sb. On the flop the sb checked, and I bet 1k into the 1500 pot. The button then raised to 2750, and the sb folded.

So the first real question is (remember I have T8 on a T82 board), do I push now, or flat call.

The second question is given the flat call on the flop, is it an auto call when on the turn a 3 comes, I check and the button pushes.

The information I had on the button was that he is quite tight and aggressive. He had raised my utg raise with 99 (I had QQ and won a smallish pot). But he had also made a bad call down on several streets in a multiway pot where it was kind of clear he was beaten, each call was only for a very small bet though. A raise at any stage would of won the hand for him. He had doubled up by getting all in preflop with QQ. He was against a loose guy and his action against any other player at the table would of been overplaying his hand, but not against that guy (he had 77). Im not sure if he knew the guy was loose or was just lucky. Probably the former, but I cant be sure.

    EDIT - T83 board, not T82!, turn 3 for board of T833

why did you check when the 3 came on the turn???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,951 ✭✭✭✭Ace2007

i just dont' really get, whey you bet 1K into a 1.5K pot, flat called the rerasied and then checked the turn...

A-10, k-10, J-J, J-9, 9-7, 10-8, 10-3,8-8,10-10( obviouusly lessened by the fact you have a ten and an eight) ,3-3, A-3s all fairly reasonable holdings for him to have here if he is as aggressive as you say.

Thinking over it again, I would more than likely fold. I can't really see him checking raising top/bottom pair on the flop. i.e 10-3

I can't see him checking A10, k-10 either. this is a dream flop for A10. I'd imagine he'd bet out.

j-j seems likely enough. Although if he is as aggressive as you say would he not have re-raised preflop.

May have flopped a set. May explain the check raise on the flop although would he play the turned house or quads so strongly? Maybe after you called his check raise? I don't know?

a-3 suited? may have check raised the flop expecting a continuation bet from you having paired his 3 and thinking you have missed altogether.

yeah I don't see much your beating now that I go back over it?
This is quite an interesting hand.

    What happened?

    Just to confirm the flop was 10 - 8 - 3

Hectorjelly was the one with the 10-8 of hearts and I was the villian - I told the story from his point of view because it was more interesting that way.

In the OP both Blinds call, and your in the cut off OP?

both Blinds check and then you bet 1000? and the SB re-raises you to 2750?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 485 ✭✭HeeHawsCantona

I'm almost certain that I was SB in this hand and Aussie guy in the full tilt hat was BB.
I called with A3 suited and check-raised the flop as I thought that a continuation bet would have to fold - when Hector flat called me I put him on an overpair - When I hit the miracle 3 I had to push - Hector called.

yah!!... the continuation bet was what i said.... and if he has of pushed on the flop with 10 8, you would have folded....

It makes no difference really to the action but Im sure you werent in the blinds Cantona. Preflop when considering my action I noticed I was two off the button, you were 1 space away from me to my left. And the SB, the full tilt guy, was the guy I wanted to call my raise. I also remember checking on the turn.

what do you expect to see that beats you? do you think he raises that much on the flop (if at all) on a rainbow board with a set? and then pushes for the pot with a full house with another street of action to go? Do you think he slow plays a higher pair preflop?

vs an unknown live irish tourney player, AT/KT/QT/JTs/A8s/99/77/etc enough to make a call profitable.

well no maybe you are right. On the flop I flat call so as to not give him a chance to fold AT KT, and also to allow him to continue bluffing if thats what he is doing. But possibly my flat call on the flop shows so much strength he has the sense to not continue with either of those two possibilities. In which case I would of been much better just pushing the flop.

but if u think he has AT or KT, and a A or K comes on the turn and u check and he pushes - then wat... pushin all in on the flop, puts the pressure on him...

Any A,K,Q,6 or 3 on the turn and u gotta think ur in trouble, thats around 17 outs(assuming that he may have a A/K/3) in which case pushin on flop is the best option imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

that 3 is a poor card but i'd still call. i don't think he ever has an op, or a house, he could have a draw or a tp hand.

I really really hate those totally useless phrases. I dont want to put him to the test, or put the pressure on him or anything like that. I have 2 pair, im not bluffing, I want him to give me all his chips. If he has a ten he has 3 outs, theres 45 cards left. Im happy to take that risk.
