    Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can advise how to stay motivated when on a diet.
    I'm 5'2 and 14st
Wel the full story is: 6 years ago i moved to Ireland from Latvia, back there my father used to look after my diet and workouts, cos he is a weightlifter and wanted me to keep fit also:) Which i did, i never was skinny, i was 10st, but all toned and i loved that weight. So when i moved in here on my own, i was too lazy to cook, so it was take away all the time, to lazy to visit gym, so there the result - 4st havier:eek:
Now i have finnaly decided to change my way of leaving, but the thing is its ok during the week, but at a weekends after few drinks i feel so hungry i would empty my fridge:mad:
Any tips to stay motivated, please..??

would you be able to do without those few drinks. You've identified your achilles heel so to speak (your weak spot) so try and avoid it?

    I'll try drink less....
But its so tempting on fridays when you have a week of a hard work behind you, and you want to relax with a wine and few friends:) Surely ending up drinking a lot then eat a lot then wake up in the morning i'll be like, ah well anyway i scrued my diet last night might as well get a chinese take away lie down and wath some tv and i'll start that diet again on monday

Ok well maybe the trick would be to allow yourself your few drinks with your friends on a Friday night, but wake up Saturday morning and get right back on track with the diet, instead of it giving up the diet altogether. We all need treats from time to time and if you seriously keep to your healthy eating all week you can maybe start looking forward to your Friday treats without it ruining your diet altogether :D

Its worth a try and it might keep you motivated all week

every time you are going to be greedy or eat stuff you should not look in the mirror and ask yourself are you happy with yourself? honestly

Yeah that might work but i dont think putting yourself down is really the answer.

Practically speaking, do you keep junk in the house, if you do get rid of it. Its less likely that you'll eat it if you have to walk to the shop to get it. Also if you do a weekly shop do it on saturday morning and buy just enough for the week, if you plan it right you will have close to an empty fridge after drinks which ==less damage.

I struggle on the weekends with diet too, routine is my friend. I keep myself busy, get out for a walk, meet up with friends anything to keep me out of the fridge.

Cut it a bit short last night,

You could think about setting short, medium and long term realistic goals. Keep a journal and review your targets every Friday, when you see your reaching your goals and your hard work is paying off you may be motivated to mind your diet at the weekends.

As somebody mentioned - don't have food in the fridge except for healthy food. So if you have to raid the fridge after drinking, it'll be bananas and turkey breast instead of something worse. If you eat healthily from Monday to Friday, and if you have a decent amount of exercise, then you will be able to withstand going off the rails a bit on the weekend. Keep the weekdays very healthy, join a gym or swimming pool or something, if you haven't already, to get the exercise you need... and if you deviate a little bit on the weekends it's OK. The main goal in my opinion is not to sink back into laziness/apathy... a strict routine during the week helps this, and also the fact that you are eating better will give you more energy.

In my experience, allowing clients some small leeway, for example a few drinks on the weekend leads to a few more, then things become lax, and the cumulative effect of being undisciplined creeps in. It seems extermity is easier for people to deal with than moderation.

Cut out all alcohol. Don't go to locations where alcohol is present. If this means cutting off an aspect of your social life, do it.

Take FULL responsability for your diet. Eat clean a minimum of 90% of the time - if you need help organising and preparing your food I recomend John Bearid's precision nutrition. - Precision Nutrition

Do your workouts first thing in the morning before anythign else. No distactions no excuses. Get it done and out of the way. If you need to get up an hour earlier to do this, do it.

These small steps will give you an even better body then when you training with your father.

As for motivation - check out this brief article on Motivational technqiues on my website - http://www.isometric-training.com/weight-loss-motivation.html

    Best of luck

I am far from being an expert as i have a lot of weight to lose myself - and I have always had the same problem after drink!! I want to eat when i come home and the next day all i want is a fried breakfast!! But I found that if i pass the chip shop on the way home and have a toasted cheese and ham samdwich instead with a big glass of water then I am fine the next day - no cravings!! Don't really know why - but it works!!! :p

    Thanks for your replies guys,

i was thinking to cut out all alcohol altogether... Do i have any willpower or not for God sake!!!!!????

And probably just keep myself occupied during weekend so i wont think of food all the time.
I go to gym 3-4 times a week. I do 30 min cardio and 30 min free weights or machines.

I bought this book "Burn the Fat feed the Muscle" By Tom Venuto it comes only in e format, but meant to be very good.... So i started reading it just to get an idea of healthy eating and calorie counting, as my dad used to do it for me before, now i have to learn myself:rolleyes:

    Thnks,

    Marina

Giving up alcohol is pretty good advice. It depends on what kind of a drinker you are I suppose. If you're a binge drinker (I know Latvian blokes like their tipple almost as much as Irish blokes) then cutting it out altogether isn't a bad idea. Either that or moderate your drinking; but it's really down to your own discipline.

Some other advice I would give you:
    • Get plenty of sleep at night
    • Enjoy your food. Eat slowly and concentrate on relishing it (as gay as that sounds)
    • Count your calories
    • Set yourself goals (whether it's the amount of weight you want to life or how you want to look)

didnt read all the replies but as far as motivation goes for me grabbing the bit of fat i dont want to be there anymore works as a daily motivator and then pictures of how fit i used to look works for the long term stuff.

make it a habit before you prepare each meal at the weekend to do something that reminds you of your goal and then prepare a meal with that aim instead of just stopping the hunger
