Wow, thanks for that deal. When I add my extras on it though it comes to €916.98. Also it does not give the option for Microsoft office home and student (I don't use Outlook and need Powerpoint). Tempted to avoid office all together and save €168.19.

Have you considered the free OpenOffice.org suite? It includes a Powerpoint substitute.

Here's some Wikipedia info on it: [Linky]

It's €470.69 with 15" TrueLife display thats supposed to be much better than the standard screen. You have to go EPP to get the €458.59 price, (reduce hardware support to 1yr Next Business Day, nice :) .) By the way, what's a Vostro?

No, but i might use it for some non-academic activity, much the same way a company car is meant for work related travel, but may be used to nip to the shops every now and then. Although, smart-arse, college projects are increasingly becoming shared on p2p networks to cut back on hosting costs.

    Hi,
Just spoke to a friend in the States. The same pc, with a similiar specs is €325 with rebates. Anyone going that direction will save some money, or can get a much higher spec machine for the Irish price.

Still the Irish price is great value, now for an excuse to buy another laptop.....and then convience the wife I've had it for years.........

Apart from the slight price difference, how would the Vostro 1000 Laptop compare (hardware and value wise) with Inspiron 1501 Laptop

    any more deals on laptops

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

That depends what kinda laptop ja want??

The laptop this thread is about is the best deal I can see now at Dell. It comes in at just under €507 with the TrueLife screen and upgraded 9-cell battery, including 1 Yr. Next Business Day Hardware Support and 24 month McAfee Security Centre software.

Don't underestimate the importance of the battery, Dells basic notebooks might give you an hour or two at most with a standard battery, with an upgraded battery you probably get 3 hours.

Just €12 extra for a TrueLife display is unheard of, and it's 15.4" widescreen to boot.

Also the Next Day Business Support means they come to you to fix any problems on-site, completely different service to CAR (Collect and Return) that's where a courier picks up your laptop, Dell fix it and return it to you. Only problem is, you're without your laptop while they're fixing it. I stand to be corrected, but I've never seen a Dell laptop at this price with 1 yr. Next Day Business Support, it's standard on their expensive business laptops, never on basic consumer models. It's a good service to get at this price, reassuring to have for the year.

when the incompatibility window opens click cancel or 'X' to close it
    add to basket
close alert once more and voila!
    I did this in Firefox

maybe it's just the exception, but I priced one of the other vostro desktops using the epp thingy and it came up as €250 more, than compared to just going straight through the normal way?

Hopefully a deal like this will present itself then

I think that might be the price excluding VAT & Shipping. Because Vostro's are business laptops they display the ex-VAT & Shipping price by default, but not if you go through EPP. There's a free shipping offer on this particular model now, but that's reflected in the price already.

    It's €578.38 for me :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 677 ✭✭✭David Michael

Im lost.. did you down grade to one years support?

    I ordered one today.
    My Spec was...
    Vostro 1000
    Vista Business
    AMD TK53 1700 2C
    15.4 LCD With True Life
    9 Cell battery
    No McFee stuff

    1 Year NBD warranty.

Final price after I rang Dell 579.59. (Was 615.89 pre negotiations with my Dell buddy :D )
(Final price pre Vista upgrade was 549.59 btw)

Thats a good spec and price for a note book for general surfing..bit of poker and some Office2007 stuff.

I checked against a lot of sites yesterday and there is nothing even close to that spec/price unless you include celerons with 512 RAM.

    Bargain!

If anyone wants my Dell contacts number fell free to PM.

I don't want to be picky beacuse i know that is a great offer but BluePaddy do you know any deal on a laptop with some smaller screen?
It just that i have 15.4 now and it's a hugh monster (far from being really mobile).
    thx in advance!

    True :D

Tav tbh the 14 in is not going to make that much of a difference size/mobility wise compared to a 15.4. The 17 & 19 are fairly huge though!

If you are on the go a lot and want proper mobiliy you will have to pay for it :( Sony SZ or Dell Lat X1 etc 12' or less under 2kg

http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=529 is your best bet for queries.

According to this site:http://shopping.msn.com/specs/shp/?itemId=802160294 it's 7.9lbs which maybe doesn't look heavy but when you add the power adaptor, my arm is killing me after few minutes (even without power cord) :/

I have freedom of having it everywhere around house but not it isn't really suitable for travel that's why i said it's a monster

Anyway thx for link and reply...maybe i will be lucky and they will make some deal on smaller laptops :P

BTW, just a heads-up on this one .. if anyone is planning on using any CardBus based cards with this, they won't work! It's fitted with the latest and greatest ExpressCard slot which although physically the same size as a Type II PCMCIA/CardBus slot, existing CardBus cards wont work in it. You'll have to wait until you can get ExpressCard equivalents of whatever you're using.

I only just noticed it myself, after I ordered it :(
