What sort of mouse do you use?

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for a mouse?

Do you prefer cordless mice, instead of corded mice?

Do cordless mice plug into a pc port and charge up from there, or are they plugged straight into the mains?

    Thanks!

Logitech MX1000. Brilliant mouse, still not quite big enough for my hands though. The original MS Intellimouse was brilliant, though not as big as I remember it being when I tried it again recently. Having used wired for years, wireless is deffo the way to go. I'll never use a wired mouse again.

    microsoft intellimouse 1.1 SE

don't do mice that don't allow left handed use.
don't do mice that have like 20 million buttons on it.
don't do mice that are cordless.
don't do mice that feel like they are a sack of potatoes to move.

    Why's that?

Can cordless mice be charged by plugging their base station into a pc port? Or does the base station have to be plugged directly into the mains?

i just don't like them, they are more expensive, still feel laggy to me, you have to charge them yadda yadda i could go on.

the only benefit they have is no cord but loop the cord and get some selotape and hey presto you have a cordless feeling corded mouse.

    Is that this one?

As it's a "laser" mouse, does that mean it doesn't have the rolling ball?

    Yes.

That's right, it's very fast at tracking, and you can both speed up and slow down the tracking on the mouse itself without software. It also glows blue at night, which looks very cool next to my Logitech G15 blue backlight keyboard, and my Logitech Z5400 blue backlight 5.1 amp :)

Logitech G5, great mouse... a little pricey but seeing as you upgrade your mouse maybe every 4 years or more, its worth it.

I used to have a Logitech MX1000, then I got myself a Logitech MX Revolution which was a lovely mouse, then I sold my PC and use the touchpad on my laptop which is taking alot of getting used to.

OP the MX Revolution* is still Logitech's premo mouse, it's very very nice. Have a look at it here:

under the specification tab it says it's cordless, although you could almost tell because of the price of the monster.

    MX1000 for home desktop.
    MX518 for laptop.

Love them both, but I really like the size, weight and cordless nature of the MX1000.

I use the Logitech M-UV55a optical mouse for the desktop.
Good mouse, and the latency is fine for FPS games.
As said before, wireless mice suck for gaming and have high latency+ batteries etc.

    What's a track ball?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,275 ✭✭✭SeanW

For maximum durability, you need a Laser mouse. All the opticals I've ever bought fell to crap in a couple of weeks. Tops. Some people have had better luck with them, but really I think messing with opticals is like a lottery game.

Traditional roller-ball mice are obsolete - you may be able to find some around from time to time, but todays (non trackball) mice mainly have no moving parts.

    I'd recommend the Logitech G5.

I have the older version of this, doesn't look as nice, has one less button, but in all the ways that matter it's the same.

my G5 has been, by a mile, the most sturdy mouse I have ever used, in the last few years I've been punishing my mice with a variety of mousepad surfaces, dirt, acidic skin sweat and heavy usage for several hours a day including intense gaming sessions.

Only the G5 has held out so well for so long (well over a year and half now) and shows no signs of any deterioration, giving perfectly accurate movement, consistently despite almost no maintenace.

    Best €65 I ever spent.

Bull. Been using wireless mice for a few years now and have never had any issues. UT, CS and BF series among others.

I have to agree , Ive built lots of systems for gamers , all using cordless mice ,( these days you would have to be some salesman to push a wired mouse on someone ) not one of them has ever complained about the "latency" in the mouse , a myth if ever I heard one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,564 ✭✭✭Naikon

Ok, I havent used a wireless mouse in quite some time so I may be a little "out of touch" with current mice, especially the laser models.
I might try out some of the newer models.

I've a wireless laser mouse. Batteries are always going because the laser lights are always on, so it's annoying.

    No such thing...

Wireless is fine for average gamers however, for very serious gamers (and pros) losing 1ms anywhere (like LCD latency for example) is unacceptable. That's why they stick to wire mice...

I use an MX500, about four years old. Great mouse. I never use wireless since I lost one - there's often children about and having the mouse "tethered" is vital!

I second this. I can always feel the difference in a wired mouse. the reactions are better, and you dont get any interfearance from phones or microwaves.

yeh i know, but the person i quoted said it was a myth that there was no latency. 1ms is a latency even though it's small it's still a latency :D.

i wasn't saying that wireless isn't fine for casual gaming, just saying that it's no myth but fact that there are latencies involved in all wireless technologies.

Same actually. Works grand for me, and all I do is play games. I think this whole gamers mouse thing is an joke, I'm still better then a lot of the people I play with with this mouse and never have any problems. I bought a 'gaming' Laser mouse there awhile back and I just hated it and put it in my box of spares, total waste of 60 euro.

I also used to use a wireless mouse back in the days of SOF2 and I was a pretty good player, didn't really notice any problem except obviously when it started to run low on batteries!

The guys here that use wireless laser mice, do you find having to constantly charge the batteries a hassle?

How long does it take to charge to mouse batteries?

How much use do you get from a charge?

Do you have the charger going beside you all the time and then when you're not using it for a few minutes set it in the docking station (so it's always being topped up), or do you charge it fully at one time such as charging it overnight?

that's another thing that would get on my tits, is another plug for the charger, i have enough plugs plugged in at once that if i added anymore i'd need a power station out the back garden.

i got mx518, (amazing when i first bought it made such a difference). I'd have to favour wired mice just cos i dont want to change batteries all the time hilarious hearing some of my clan going "oh **** where the battery gone eeeerr FFS where is it!" im thinking of getting the new G5 07 edition with the weights. But 2 things, does anyone who has 2 gaming mice feel the difference when switch between them cos they'll be on different comps and i'll just use the ones thats free, even thou i might ahve been on other one before that (prob not much of a difference)
and.. do weights in mice make a differnece in ur oppinon? Yeah i see the point of them but tbh i never bother using the quick switch sensitivty change on my mx518 when using for sniper or for pistol/machine gun.. so why will i be bothered to change the weights?

Logitech MX 1000 here too - laser wireless with charging station (so no changing of batteries just remember to put mouse back into recharging base) - and love it! Best mouse I've ever had.

Yes indeed there is a latency , But the myth is not the fact of the latency , but rather whether this latency is actually longer or adds significantly to most peoples reaction times , i.e. is it really a noticable impact in an FPS. It would certainly have to be longer than a millisecond for this !

Does the charging station plug into the mains in order to work, or does it plug into a pc port and able to recharge the mouse that way rather than having to be plugged into the mains?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭morgana

yeah the charger sits next to the mouse pad and usually I put the mouse back at night when I switch the computer off. During the day it usually sits just on the mouse pad. But a charge seems to last for a few days anyway - I've forgotten to return it to its house a few times and it was working away great the next day. The MX 1000 has a battery status indicator as well and it usually up all the dots.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 198 ✭✭zoe

Thanks morgana. So it charges fully overnight.

I've noticed that many of the mice mentioned in this thread are Logitech. I wonder why that is? Very few other brands have been mentioned...

I use an mx518 for everyday regular use, nice and comfy. Fair amount of buttons. I find it way too bulky for games though, so I use my old trusty mx300 which is the undeniable king of mice when it comes to gaming, beating off the likes of the 1.1se! I had a Razer Copperhead but it was one of the worst mice I've ever used. Skip city. Really terrible performance and it just felt horrible to hold too. On a wired vs wireless note, wireless mice are not in the same league as wired mice when it comes to first person shooters. I'm sure technology will eventually catch up just like tfts have (to a large degree anyway), but right now it's a big no no.

What is this trackball which I found on eBay?

Do you just move the ball on the top in order to move the cursor, rather than moving around the actual mouse?
