Alternative Healthy Snacks

    Hi,

I am trying ot get fit and healthy...started back at the gym 3/4 times a week doing cardio and weight training after a couple of years break. My diet is fairly good, the problem is I sit at a computer all day in work and tend to snack.

Problem is, I tend not to like traditional healthy snacks - I dont like fruit, (I can only stomach a smoothie) and Im not a big fan of nuts either. (A few cashew nuts I could handle)

Does anyone have any other suggestions for healthy snacks I can nibble on during the day??

I recently started eating olives and I love them...but no idea how bad they are for you..same goes for pickled onions - I could easily eat a jar of one of those two during the day at work...

    Cheers !

Hard to make suggestions without knowing more, and also you may be snacking because your main meals are inadequate. How about you tell us what you do eat in the course of a day and at what time and we'll see what we can come up with to tweak it?

Also your current weight, your gender, when you train and how often (and what you're doing in the gym roughly), and what your goals are in terms of fat to be lost/muscle to be gained would help.

Im male, 26, 5'11'', 154lbs, in gym 3/4 times a week, 40 mins various cardio, then about 8 different weight excercises - all low weights with 3-4 sets of 12-15 reps.

Im trying to lose fat and tone up a bit. Im not toned and a also have a decent sized beer gut.

Breakfast would be a couple bowls of Special K and also juice. Lunch would be a chicken wrap or soup and brown bread etc.

Dinner varies but could go from just having more cereal, to cold chicken or meat with cheese, (and a glass of red wine) to a nice 3 course dinner in a good Indian or THai restaurant..

I dont eat many fast foods, greasy pizzas, take aways etc.

Also have a few beers at the weekend, nothing crazy though.

    Thanks for the help !

Firstly cut out the Special K its full of sugar, try making porridge instead.

You dont seem to have any vegetables included at all , you gotta try and fit some in aswell as fruit.

Your meals do not seem planned at all, i know it can be hard to find time but making the effort will result in more enjoyable meals and less tendency to snack.

Read the stickies!!! You will get all the info you need.

If you like pickled onions (delish) try pickles or beetroot (messy). Maybe try some fruit&nut mix - takes away dryness nuts alone can cause.

Your diet is probably fine for normal time, but there are some aspects to it that won't help you when you are trying to lose weight. As the guy above me says, Special K is not great. You might not like porridge, but Kelkin muesli is decent. I love cheese and Indian and Thai, but they can be quite fattening. Cheese is generally very high in saturated fat. Be careful at the Indian - dishes like korma are very creamy and not conducive to weight loss. Some things, like tandoori chicken, are grand though. Thai food can be very high in salt, with lots of peanuts and coconut milk which are not advisable when you are trying to cut down.

Having said that, at 11 stone you can't have much to lose so you don't need to hear this. As regards healthy snacks... a tin of tuna? :)

this site says the ideal weight for men of your height should be 164 pounds. this would mean that you are underweight?

i personally think that 11 stone for a man of 5'11 is to little.

I agree with the above - you are under weight and need to hit the weights much harder and cut back on the excessive carbs
