Best Gym near Dundrum or Town to lose Weight?

I'm 5'7 and in the last couple of years have put quite a bit of weight, I used to be about 11 stone which is probably a bit too much, but am now about 13.I don't think it's my diet and I don't really eat very much but I do drink an enormous amount of sugary drinks.
If I wanted to lose weight I would cut down on sugary drinks (would 500ml Lucozade a day still be ok?), join a gym and get a trainer. Would just running on a treadmill be enough? I live in Dundrum, but Town would be just as good. Where would be the best place to go?

Just a quick point if you are only planning on only using the threadmill would running in the great outdoors not be a better option rather than spend money on a gym.

Total Fitness is in dundrum its a good gym. you wont loose weight unless you have them do a programme of exercise and a healthy diet for you!

Quoted for truth. It will also be a bit more interesting and will save you time going to/from the Gym etc.

Its all relative... I'll recommend giving fizzy drinks up completely but if not then you can still get away with it if you make other changes. Similarly, running on a treadmill might be enough, if your diet is good, but in theory that means cutting out the fizzy drinks.

If you go to the gym (sorry I can't recommend one, I don't live in Dublin) and get a trainer, first thing he's going to say is: improve your diet (note - not eating a lot doesn't meant you're eating the right foods), cut out the fizzy drinks (at least while you are trying to lose weight), and in addition to running on the treadmill, he'll also give you a weights routine. My advice is, while you're doing it you might as well do it right - do what your trainer says for 3 months. You'll lose the weight easily and will see lots of other positive changes that you wouldn't see if you were only cutting down on fizzy drinks and doing a bit on the treadmill. But as I said, it is all relative... any change for the better is a start.

"I don't think its my diet"

Give me a break!!!! You have put on over 2stone and it has nothing to do with what you put in your mouth. Come on mate take a reality check. Yes hit the gym, get going and post up your current diet while you are at it.

    Finally, trainer says NO!

    to soft drinks that is.

If you work in town you could always cycle, I cycled from ballinteer to town every day for 6 years and my weight never went above 11 Stone, I'm 5'11.
And I ate a huge amount of food.
I'm currently a member of Total fitness in Sandyford, it's a good gym, but I don't find the staff the most helpfull, a lot of them seem to have friends or regular gym users who the have long chats with and it is hard to ask them questions.

TF is not bad overall, it's large, has a lot of equipment, and if you pick you're times there are days when it's very quiet.

i'll agree with Noelie however about the staff, i'm about to renew my membership for a 3rd year, mainly due to the location, and even though i know the staff know me and recognise me ( im there usually 3 to 4 times a week ) they never stop to ask or talk to me.

dont be put off by this however, there are plenty of us up there who can help you out with training if you want to join.

might start a thread on tis actually ..

Im in TF sandyford aswell and id also have to agree with you guys, good gym and has everything you need but the staff there are fairly bad except for maybe one guy who always asks if he can help.

Your diet cant be that good if your after putting on waight, cut out all the fizzy drinks and read the stickies. Im 24, 5 9" started nearly 3mts ago and am dowm to just under 15st now. I was drinking at least 2 bottels of lucazade a day and am every bit as happy now with my bottles of water. And with the price of gym's it would be fairly pointless to join just to us the treadmill when theres plenty of places to go for a run outdoors.

@The guys in TF already, have any of you used the guys from Icon Fitness?? If so, did you find them any good?? Thanks. (sorry for jacking the tread!!)
