If it's under warranty, take it back to O2 and don't let them fob you off(and they will try)

I'd also advise you to have a look in the consumer issues forum for more helpful info

ok thanks, probably the best idea, i'm not entitled to a replacement tho am I ? just a repair?

Id probably go directly to Apple. I mean ring the customer care line. You will be put on hold and end up talking to someone in India but you might get more joy outta them then what could be a summer-part-timer in O2 who probably won't be all too interested in your complaint. At the end of the day, you're looking at a repair, which will go directly to Apple in Cork anyway, so I'd say cut out the middle man and ring the customer care line, with your serial number handy.

Personally I would go to Typetec ... (if you are close by) they are an authorized service centre

I had a staining issue with my macbook and they sorted it out uber fast .. even pre-ordered the part (under warranty) so I had no downtime .. absolute gents and they service in-house.

The downtime is the killer if things get sent away (if you go to O2)

apple dont do any repairs in ireland directly, Typetec and Mactivate are the main service providers in Dublin, apple will generally refer you to either of these, have used both in the past, but Typetec have definitely been more efficient with turn around times.

Surely you will have to pay Typetec or Mactivate though? They are hardly going to fix the machine for free if you just walk in when you didnt buy it from them (assuming they do retail also, I dont know these places). Whereas if you go to Apple directly, or back to 02 you have a better chance of the repair being covered under your warranty. Surely!

Surprisingly no! As authorized service centres I assume that they bill Apple directly for warranty jobs.

I wouldnt assume that. Perhaps they will, but perhaps they will bill the customer and leave it to them to deal with Apple, as some other companies do.

When I brought Macbook Pro into Typetec, the person before me was told that he would be charged as his imac was out of warranty. They asked me for the date of purchase and serial number and no mention of charges.

Well thats the way it should be. Just doesnt always hold unfortunately. I havent had dealings with either of these companies because I live outside the Pale, but hopefully they are as decent as they sound from what you say!! :)

Yeah this is right. I was in a place in Liberty Lane in Dublin with a mac a couple of years ago which was an authorised service centre, and the guy logs on with some kind of special service centre number and he's on this non public apple site where he put in my s/n which told him every detail of the mac ie where and where it was bought, and how long of a warranty or extended warranty there was. If it tells him it is covered under warranty or under a special repair programme you don't pay anything to the service centre. Couldn't get much more at this stage cos I was like some long necked goose tryin to see over his shoulder!

Yeah, like I said, it is supposed to work that way, but it doesnt always hold. Some Apple store's don't even honour the Apple warranty on certain products if you have not bought in an Apple store e.g. if you buy an iPod in some random store and you happen to bring it to for example the London Flagship they will politely tell you to f off without a receipt. Even though they can check the serial number and see the purchase date to check the warranty. If you cannot prove to them you bought directly from Apple they won't help. That is of course until you ask for the manager and start quoting the T&C from the Apple site. Then they start to play ball :D

Im not saying it shouldnt work like you guys say, just that it doesnt always work out like it should :(

Well so far no bills but if that changes I'll be sure to mention it here :) I bought directly from Apple btw, so maybe as you said that makes a difference..

Your best bet is to bring it to an Apple authorised repair centre. That way they can diagnose the problem and order the part, so you'll only need to bring it in to have the screen replaced, and won't have any downtime!

I know for a fact that any in warranty product (apart from ipods) will be serviced by Mactivate or Typetec with out charge.

In case it's of any use, I'm very reliably informed that the average turnaround time for Galmac in Galway is somewhere around the week mark (depending on parts, sometimes less)...

(TBH, in the interests of full disclosure, I'm in the fortunate position not to have to depend on this, but I have friends "on the inside", which has worked to my advantage... and no, I certainly don't work for them, and never have)
