    Howdy,

Just wondering if anybody is familiar with either of these gyms and what different services/facilities they provide.

I get discounts through work for the two of them and they're both very near the office so i'm thinking of joining up now that I've moved back to Dublin.

    The prices for me are:

Jackie Skelly Fitness: €66 per month plus €75 joining fee
Fitness Dock: €475 per year with no joining fee

Now, obviously the Fitness Dock works out much cheaper so it's a definite bonus and, well, a gym is a gym basically, but would the Jackie Skelly gym be a whole lot better?

To be honest, for €800 a year, I'd probably want them to do the exercise for me!

Had a look around fitness dock there a few weeks ago, didn't think it was great, their free weights section wasn't great at all. Pinnacle is around the corner from fitness dock and the weights in there are amazing.

i'd def recommend pinnacle if you are interested in lifting its a savage gym. works out cheaper than jackie skellys and similar to fitness dock. You should drop by for a visit!

What kind of exercise do you intend to be doing?

I haven't a bad word to say about the fitness dock. The free weights section is going to be more than adequate for 90% of people and there is a lot of cardio equipment. The only problem is that it gets very crowded in the evenings but thats to be expected with a city centre gym.

    Excellent staff aswell.

jackie skelly's on clarendon st is not great. I'm a member and to be honest the only reason i am is the location.

there are not many free weights, and the machines are ok but it is a very small section.

the cardio machines are ok, lots of treadmills but most of the tv's with them don't work.

It isn't the cleanest place in the world but it has improved slightly lately

I'd be doing cardio/core work/free weights, so the free weights are fairly important, but then I'm not exactlygoing to be lifting 2 ton weights - all I need is reasonably heavy weights and good, free benches.

I'd be more worried about it being crowded tbh - what are the opening hours? Might start going in the mornings.

None of the Jackie Skellys have a squat rack AFAIK and their selection of barbells is generally limited - things to consider if you plan to do free weights there. I used to train in one and it got very limiting very fast (and not because I'm some sort of a behemoth, I'm far from it).

The only plus of the place is probably the fact that it has a pool.

    Hi everyone,

I work as Membership Consultant at The Fitness Dock so would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about our gym.

I would say that the biggest plus our gym has is the staff. Not only are they friendly and enthusiastic, they are very highly qualified and are continually updating their qualifications. Also, they are treated very well by the management, which means they are highly motivated to give their absolute best. Each instructor is given a variety of opportunities to develop (personal training, paid classes etc) so they are keen to stick with the gym. As a result, the turnover here is minimal.

This means that you'll see the same faces and the gym becomes a friendly and familiar place for you to train. In many gyms, you do an assessment and by the time it comes round to your re-assessment, the original instructor who took for it and was meant to look after you, has packed his/her bags and joined another gym. That doesn't happen at our gym.

I highly recommend that anyone interested come down to The Fitness Dock anytime for a FREE workout to see what it's like. Ask for me and I'd be more than happy to show you around.

It opens at half 6 on weekdays. I prefer going to the gym in the mornings so I went for off peak membership which worked out a good bit cheaper.

Stay well away from Jackie Skelly. They are a bunch of thieves in my opinion. They falsify documents/contracts. Continue taking money from your account without permission, are vastly overcrowded and do not do the free training they say they do.

I was a member of Jackie Skelly and even though I left nearly 2 years ago (to join somewhere else), they still occasionally spam my phone

I left clarendon street some time ago as the facilities were poor, its always busy and its not always the cleanest imo. Its a small gym considering the volume of members. If ballsbridge is closer its far better. However there are better gyms out there.

Make sure you read your T&C's in full before joinin.

    I agree about the staff.

But.... carpet in the changing rooms??? When are the carpets going to be removed and burned and replaced with (hygenic) tiles?
