student diet

    I am going back to college for a year to do my hons degree so I will be low on funds, I want to still be able to train and eat healthy with the odd night out in the pub.

    Can someone please suggest a good cutting diet for a poor student?

    You can eat healthily reasonably cheaply it just requires more time and preperation. You can buy the ingredients for a homemeade Spaghetti Bolognese for about a tenner and you'd get 4 meals out of that if you froze it in individual portions. Can also be done with Currys and the like.

    What's your workload going to be like in college? From my own college experience I had far more free time.

    Protein sources and veggies/fruit will, or should, be the bulk of your grocery shopping cost.

    Cottage cheese and eggs are fairly cheap protein sources, tinned mackerel/sardines (also good fats in the fish), turkey tends to be pretty cheap for some reason also. Another one is buying a whole chicken (usually hardly more expensive than 2 breasts), roast it stick it in the fridge and just keep taking meat off it for salads.

    For veg what's in season is usually cheapest and best (www.eattheseasons.co.uk). Local fruit and veg shops usually cheaper than supermarkets, possibly with the exception of Lidl/Aldi.

    Being in college actually makes training and eat clean both easier and harder. I think its just a slightly different challenge tbh. Tinned tuna and wholemeal pitta bread are one of my (also a broke student) staples. As wasabi said eggs are also a good lean cheap source of protein. Eating well is a lot cheaper than eating canteen food in college in my experience.
    Planning though (esp around exam time and deadline time) is paramount. I would give it a shout and see how you get on, if you get stuck or whatever then reconsider your approach. Only what i would say is that what you are eating now properly works out cheaper than the average student diet!

    I'm living the student lifestyle now and tbh i'm eating cleaner then i normally would.

    My advice is buy two whole chickens a week this will give you a decent bit of meat and will only cost the same as four breasts. Learning how to cook is cheaper and easier then buying stuff.

    Normally on a sunday i make a 1kg of mince beef into either a chilli or a bolognaise and then freeze it with portions of rice in lunch boxes this sets you up nicely for the week.

    Eggs also ftw I get about 30 eggs a week for about 3yoyos so thats nice and cheap for a good quality food source.

    Can someone please suggest a good cutting diet for a poor student?

    Just to clarify - are you looking for good tips to eat healthily or are you looking for a 'cutting' diet that a body builder would use coming towards a competition ?
