Has to be Police Squad ;)

I remember RTE used to show it, they should give it a rerun for old times sake :)

Classic! I've been watching the Naked Gun movies again lately

It would have to be 'The Wire' by a thousand country miles, for me. I really can't watch any other cop show in the same way anymore. They just seem so unrealistic in comparison. I'm constantly pointing out flaws and such so I'm very annoying to be around when something like CSI is on.

Could 'Dexter' be classified as a cop show? That's pretty damn good, too.

The Wire, no other show even comes close. I also like The Bill.

    The Shield wins hands down.

The Shield is a great show no doubt, but The Wire is in a class of its own.

Seeing as discontinued shows are being accepted for nomination.. I nominate Hill Street Blues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 355 ✭✭purplegeko

Law and Order SVU or my guilty pleasure Cagney and Lacey.

    In that case.....

    Homicide: Life on the street.
    Miami Vice(1st two seasons, anyway)
    NYPD Blue

I was a pretty big fan of those, too.

    CSI - all of them.

Inspector Morse - but don't miss the beginning of the programme or you are wasting your time !!

'The Wire' of course. Anyone who hasn't voted for it mustn't have seen it and sat down for a few episodes.

Honourable mentions to 'The Shield', 'Homicide: Life on the Street', and 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent'. But really it's 'The Wire'.

Probably Law and Order:SVU. I'm gonna have to check out the wire now!

    Homicide: Life on the street.

Excellent show as well - isn't some of the same writing team on Homicide and the Wire? I've never seen the Wire - must try and remedy that.

While we're at it - Garda Patrol. :p

Not exactly a cop show but Standoff is great :) Its an FBI thing

To be pedantic it wasnt a cop show seeing as the main character was a criminal psychologist who worked with the police, but how has nobody mentioned Cracker? Brilliant drama with plenty of comedy thrown in, Coltrane ****ing killed it. His drinking, his scenes with the wife, the female cop and the Irish lad, it was violent gripping drama met with rib hurting comedy, nearly all on Coltranes part. The episodes with the always brilliant Robert Carlysle giving a typically outstanding performance as a mentally unbalanced Liverpool fan on a killing spree whos eventual intention was to detonate a bomb in the home section of Old Trafford.

I know its wrong, but a little part of the dark far corner of my brain must have been shouting "Blow the cockney glory hunting cnuts back to Essex Rob" :D Im joking, im joking.

Not a cop show. It's essentially about Delta Force - no cops or investigations in sight.

You'll change your vote when you do :)

Hill Street Blues, The Bill(the first 3-4 years before it turned into a soap), NYPD Blue and CSI(Las Vegas).

In a lighter vein, an honourable mention for Police Squad and Sledgehammer.

Yeah, The Wire is pretty much Homicide's spiritual successor. Same writing team, same city, same police force and a lot of the minor actors on the show are the same, too. Obviously, as it's on HBO they don't hold back on the foul language and nudity like they had to on Homicide.

Which is why I consider "Homicide: LotS" to be the second best cop show. Its inception can be found in a book by a former ex-Baltimore cop, David Simon. David Simon then took a creative lead when he went on to create "The Wire", so they've both got their roots in the same guy. He wrote a big chunk of episodes for both series.

Ed Burns, co-writer on "The Wire", didn't write for "Homicide: LotS" and so adds a different flavour but there's the same almost despondent air on both shows - the bad guys sometimes get away, good things do not necessarily happen to good people, yet the force keep on fighting the good fight.

I believe Tom Fontana who created Oz was also heavily involved with Homicide.
    Class act!

You'd believe correctly. Simon and Fontana have created three top-notch series between them. Four if you count Simon's miniseries "The Corner".

Am totally gob smacked by all the answers and yet no one has named the all time number one - CHiPs.

Officer Francis ('Frank') "Ponch" Poncherello and Officer Jon Baker, role models to a generation of Gards!!!

    CHiPs_S1.jpg
Out now for the first time on DVD!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,683 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

The best cop show can only be The Wire.
That scene late on in season one when
    Greggs was shot
was so visceral that it felt like it happened to a real person and that's because of how "real" and believable all involved make the show. All other cops shows scream "fake" after you watch it.
    P.S.
The follow-on scene in the hospital where Rawls tells McNulty that he's a gaping asshole but it's not his fault that Greggs got shot is also pretty damn good.

I can't be doing with any of that American stuff, so I have to say The Bill (pre-2000). It was a great show before they cunted the whole thing up by turning the entire cast into rapists, rape victims, serial shaggers, gays, lesbians, arsonists or corpses.

Series 6 is excellent. I saw it a few months ago, I don't think I'm allowed to tell you where or how to get it on the forums but you can probably figure that out yourself. Tv3 always mess it up by cancelling it for weeks whenever that I'm an celebrity ****e comes on.

NYPD blue a few years ago was great.

I love the Shield now and a fan of The Bill too.

But The Shield wins hands down.

The Shield. easily. season 5 was probably the best of all the seasons, and 6 is damn good aswell.

The Wire is pretty good, but a tad too inconsistent.

I got all excited when TV3 announced that The Shield was returning to our screens. I thought that they were going to show season 6 but instead they're showing a re-run of season 5. It was a bit too good to be true I guess. Can't wait for season 6 this 'fall' (autumn)

    The Shield numba 1!
And it's been renewed for Season 7 the last one they again say this time!
    I don't like the CSI's they're too polished. Initially I did.
I have to say also Profiler was great.
    I like Medium too.

    Starsky and Hutch!
    The Streets of San Francisco.
    What about Columbo!
Ah TJ Hooker now that was a laugh!
I kept hoping that Shatner's wig would fall, blow off or be shot off!:D

Does the wire have a slow start? I've watched the first 3-4 episodes now, while it's defintly not bad, it hasn't pulled me in, and it's weeks since I've watched an episode.
