Anyone ever used the power plate and what do you make of them? Are they any good? My local gym has one - tried it earlier and am curious as to its effectiveness!

Yep they're awesome - then again I would say that I was the first instructor qualified in Power Plate here in Ireland and helped introduce them to the Irish Market. If you inerested pm your email addy and I can send you over the scientific studies on their effectiveness and a few program ideas if you'd like to try it properly.

What is this? Some sort of giant vibrator?

Finally, a use for my washing machine.

Boru, care to offer some insight?

AFAIK it's a machine that you stand on and it emits vibrations on different levels. Think of a kango hammer or a washing machine except a lot more powerful. You perform different types of exercises though I wouldn't know any of them.

Ha ha, certainly would be a different use to it! I've read so many different things about these machines and the posters next to the machine don't really show how to use it properly. Is there a book or an online site anyone knows of which explains it?

Does anyone know if there are classes in power plates or do you have to join a gym that has one? I'm in Dublin, south west to be more specific. Thanks

There's one in Westwood (leopardstown) but you have to be a member, don't think they have a class on it though.

i think 1escape in the city centre has one (http://www.oneescape.ie/itonic.html), not sure if it is member only or you can do a course as an individual. they should be able to tell you

why in the world would you want to do a class on it anyway?

Its fine for a few mins after a workout but seriously people believe its going to get them in shape and drop fat?? Come on. If you want a class then do spinning or boot camp or ashtanga yoga

I'd like to see the scientific research I always thought the whole concept was a bit rubbishy.

All the studies I've seen have been on un-trained individuals and the results have been so so, the only study I seen mentioned involving elite athletes found a negative training result

In fairness they do a nice job of massaging you hams and calfs after a workout, although probably not good as an actual massage.
