If you are thinking of upgrading your CPU and already have a decent screen, this month you have the option of de-selecting the screen.

Base unit and keyboard (no mouse;) ) works out at just €210.04 inc. VAT & delivery. Great value IMO.

    Hi Do-more,

if you use this link http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/topics/epp/epp?c=ie&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ieepp1 and enter the value code and deselect monitor and mouse and [edit]hardware support and then click through cancel when it asks you to fix incompatibility, that'll get you the base unit for €199.54 !

My order just placed so if it all goes through I'll let this board know.

It's great value for a base unit.

Under the monitor details click the first button that says "No 19" Monitor [subtract € 121.00]"

    €415 with Home Premium, 19" and AMDx2 4400.

Only problem is the graphics. Would the psu stand up to having a better gfx card?

305-D07C12 put in the two boxes under 'Dell E-value' down the left of page.

I got my IR number but will confirm when I can track order.

    To others:
You deselect the following to get the sub-€200 price for the base unit.

    Monitor
    Hardware Support
    Mouse

Click cancel when the pop-up asks to fix compatibility problem, you may have to do that more than once and there it is in your basket ready for processing.

It is v good if you already have a decent monitor and/or want to use it attached to TV (like me)

If you put a much better graphics card into the base, would the Psu be ok or would it need a changing....e.g something like a 7900gtx or higher....

Edit:Oops! Seen above someone already asked the question!

I had a great offer last week d06e11a but can't seem to repeat it, was an AMD dual core 4400, 2 gig ram, 256 Card, 19" wide flat, 1 year etc for 420 all in. Damn it anyways. Only thing is I am presume the wide 19" aren't as big as normal 19" due to the diagonal measurements.

No..they unit only takes half height cards, plus the psu wouldn't be up to much anyway.

There are two boxes - one for the '305' bit and the other for the rest of the code.
Juts make sure you have no spaces after both sets of numbers.

I'm really thinking of buying the 521 with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3600+. I have a 19" Ultrasharp and a decent keyboard already.

I don't really know much about this processor...what is like compared to core duo 2?

I have an order placed for one of these and having rang a guy in the sales dept. he told me that the PC was more than capable of playing any of the most modern games out there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,492 ✭✭✭Sir Oxman

Order gone through this morning - on or before next Monday delivery.

The integrated graphics aren't a gamers dream - nvidia geforce 6150LE - for instance it'll give a score of 3.0 for both gaming graphics and aero in Vista. It is perfect for day-to-day PC use.
Make sure to update nvidia drivers with modded inf file @ http://www.laptopvideo2go.com which has drivers for both dwsktop and laptop nvidia cards.

The other threads about this deal on here have posts detailing (it seems) the one graphics card that you can replace the integrated one with - an ATI.

I'm not a big gamer btw.

For some of the deals (like with the 24" WS) the PC+Monitor is cheaper than the PC.

For the 20" the cost of the PC+Monitor is about €160 more than the monitor alone, and you should be able to shift the PC for more than that.

And you believed him ? I hope you are being sarchastic. What do you expect a sales guy to say ? He is in sales. They are are not clued in...they think if a card has 256megs ram it must be good. The fact is I have used a no. of these systems and the video card is rubbish, the onboard even worse. Sure...you can play modern games, but Quake4 for instance at low res (1024) with AA turned off still gives poor framerates. Even more up to date games like Oblivion would choke this system. Don't be under any illusions. If you want a system for gaming, get a system with a video card suitable. This system benches about 700 in 3dmark06. That should say enough. Unfortunately you can't upgrade the card as the case only takes half height cards which are rare, and my point earlier was even if it did take full height cards, the psu is around the 250w mark and just would not cope. The Dimension E521 would be a better bet in this regard.

However the C521 as an internet, or general use PC it's great. I ordered one too. But for gaming it sucks 100%. The ati card itself is worth about 30euro and is geared as an entry level graphics card. In fact is ATI's cheapest card and has been superseeded by the ati 2400xt which has almost equal suckage. It is slower then an Nvidia 6600gt and that's saying something. Which puts it at performance levels 3 generations ago. To play all the latest games "fine" at a resolution of say 1280 which is about the most common res, you would need something worth 200 euro plus easily. To play something like Crysis due out soon you would need an Nvidia G80 or ATI 2900XT, probably worth as much as this PC.

but what would be like for Vista?

I don't really bother with games apart from Football Manager :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Yes, it's fine for Vista. One review mentioned that you need to tone down the aero effects but I had no issue with it. It's a pity it only takes half height cards as this limits upgrade potential, but if it's a pc you want for downloads, internet browsing, office work, pretty much anything except 3d, then it's fine.

Unfortunately you're going to be seriously disappointed, it's not only crap for new games, it even struggles with older titles like Battlefield 2 on anything above low-med on low resolution. If it's a gaming machine you want, even a budget one, the C521 is a terrible choice - the half height restriction means even the absolute best card you can get it still fairly crap for modern gaming (X1600 low profile, which even at that is barely better then the old 9800XT's and X700s from 2 and even 3 generations ago). The X1300 is about 16 or 17 months old at this stage and even when it was brand new it was only mediocre to poor for games at the time, you can only imagine how it fares now with the latest games.

At least he told you that, you can ring them back up and explain to them that it's not playing games at all despite the 'advice' given, throw a hissy fit, whatever.

After reading a couple of the posts here earlier I sent an email of to the guy who I had dealt with when ordering. I asked him to confirm in writing what he told me over the phone. That was only a few hours ago so in fairness I wouldnt expect a reply until tomorrow.

I followed that up with a phone call to the sales dept. and was told that the PC has now been shipped and is due for delivery tomorrow. This guy then tells me the same - that it is a great system with great graphics but he wasn't as determined as the first chap. He assured me that it would be OK but proceeded to transfer me to their tech. support people so I could discuss the matter with them. He also applied €30 to the account which is nice to get but you have to ask why. Waited 10 mins or more on the techies but had to hang up as I was busy at work.

I dont know what to do now - whether to return it without opening the boxes and setting it up (they will then claim I never tried it so therefore the PC is fine) or to go ahead and get it up and running and see how its performing.

Its for the young lads here and while they wont be playing online games they do have a couple of fairly big games - Medieval 2 total war, Titan Quest, Prey, Age of Empires etc

Yeah the 7900gs which is a great video card for gaming works perfectly with your pc....my advice sell the x1300pro on ebay or something and get the 7900gs available on ebuyer for €130...its a bargain imo

The games you have mentioned especially Prey would need a 7900gs (which is the most powerful card your power supply can take) the below chart compares both cards...(over 30 is what you want to see in most games)

Many thanks for that. Is the 7900gs half height the same as the X1300.

I had initially went through the online chat with Dell and the guy there said that i would need to be careful with upgrading any card as it could invalidate the warranty

Its slightly bigger but fits in perfectly....the only thing you will have to get is a Y splitter (to connect to the power supply)...you can find one in any pc store for a few quid....

    http://www.supernotebook.com/atx%20accessorie%20images/ysplitter-master-350x350.jpg

With regard to the Dell warranty...dont worry Dell used to give an upgrade option to the 7900gs a few months ago with the E520,which is the same pc as yours...so it shouldnt affect the warranty at all...

type in dimension E521 7900gs into the search bar in the dell community forums and you will get much more info on it...all good :)

    N07643 - €603.29

I looked at all the laptop codes you mentioned vjoc and definetely going to buy one. Here are the latest prices through http://www.dell.ie/epp. It's cheaper that going through the deals website
Enter the relevant code in the "Dell E-Value" section. Remove the XP bit if you want Vista

    Inspiron 1501 Laptop:
    E305-N07151(XP) - €430.22
    E305-N07152(XP) - €462.29

    E305-N07642(XP) - €508.99
    E305-N07643(XP) - €565.26

Thinking of getting E305-N07643 for €565.26
    Main specs are:
    Base - Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core T2130 Processor (1.86GHz,533MHz,1MB L2 cache)
Operating System - Genuine Windows Vista™ Business - English
    LCD - 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display

Hard Drive - 160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
Video Card - Intel® Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 256MB shared graphics memory
CD/DVD Drives - Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive including software
    Primary Battery - 6 cell Lithium-Ion Battery (53 Whr)
    Modem - 56.6k V.92 Capable Internal Modem & Adapter - Ireland/Spain
    Wireless Local Area Networking - Dell™ Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini-PCI Card (for Dual-Core Processors)
Hardware Support - 1 Year Base Warranty - Collect & Return

That's the dearest of all the deals but it's mighty value and better to have a good spec laptop as hard to upgrade.

I've one question though. Is it better to go with the reliable XP OS or head the Vista route.
