i have 8 i instances of svchost.exe running in processes, checked it out on google and according to one website i visited it could be a trojan or a downloader but is also essential to the running of windows, just wondering is it normal to have 8 instances of it running?
    thanks

    Eight? Sounds dodgy.

Wouldn't be so sure of it running too many times. Grab a copy of Process Explorer and make sure the svchost.exe is located in C:\Windows\System32\, it will show you the full path.

I've also seen a few instances of svchost.exe running simultaneously on a few machines as well. The machines seem to be clean also. Wouldn't worry too much about it.

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging
