Generally How long after sending away vetting do you get medical and how long does the vetting take?

Just wondering so have an idea when to fly back home etc I cant imagine mine would take long since I'm young and havent done much apart from go to school

I sent my vetting forms in for 14 January and I have just got my medical date for this month. I dont know if that helps.

Whenever I was doing a work placement with the PSNI in Enniskillen I was told by a Constable there that you can practice the role play scenarios in Derry and in Belfast with a private company! Does anyone know anything about this? If so this would be really great!

    I have just gone blind!!!!!!

Dont know anything about that, I think there are some websites that offer teaching but dont know about actual centres that teach you how to do it.

Yea just trying to maximise my potential replies! Im not sure how popular this place is so ill just ring the station and ask her for more information on that im sure she wont mind. I know the initial selection test shouldn't be a problem but I will have to practice my role-plays but that is obviously only if i make it that far in campaign 13. After looking at the role-plays I may be presented with some seem quite tricky such as the one below:

You are a car thief and are looking for a nice car to either take for a spin or to steal any valuables from in the car park. You’ve been looking through car windows and trying door handles to see if any are unlocked. Police will approach and speak to you.

    Deny any involvement.
State you have only just arrived.
Make up a story to explain why you are there e.g. waiting for a friend.

React angrily to any accusation you are trying to steal a car.

I have seen some of the websites offering DVD'S etc to prepare me for the assessment centre so I will purchase them aswel but im sure it would be best if i just do and say what comes naturally to me in the assessment centre.

its campaign 14... and you will not be given anything like that example you have shown there during the assesment centre. Psni isnt the same as other police forces

Im pretty sure I may be presented with something like that as I downloaded this from the PSNI support team website and it was attached as the job description for a role-player.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

Job descritption for a role player....

I think this may be on about getting the job of being an actual role player at the assesments, where you need to have good acting skills

The assesment will require you to handle various situations but it will be non policing situations. it tests your communication, team building, leadership, self belief and ability to carry out decisions etc. Not seeing how well you can steal cars.

    It states on the website:
The requirement is for ‘real people’ to role play ‘real life’ scenarios that will enable the student Police Officers to prepare for situations they will face following their training. Scenarios based on day-to-day police work include Stop & Search; Road Traffic Collision; Disorderly Behaviour; Entry Search.
The pay is £10 per/hour and you can apply on-line so if anyone wants to apply or knows anyone who may want to apply for this position they should visit the PSNI Support Team website.

Anyway my point was I would need to practice my response as the police officer to this scenario and not practice acting the stated situation out because obviously that is not what I would be required to do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

ahhh ok i see what you mean now

However, the situation you get will still be a non policing one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

actually what you are looking at is the description of what the role players will need to do when acting in the police college.

But for the assessment centre you do to get into the police, the situational role play is non police related.

Ah wel thats good to know then. This particular position must only be far the police college.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

I suspect it is. They explain to you in the letter before the test that it will not require you to have any knowledge of policing or expect you to act as a police officer.

hi wondering does anyone know if after the medical, if succesful, will they send out a letter to say u r medically fit? and if they do how long does it usually take?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 CooperCop

    Hey Colt

I got my medical letter and was passed medically fit within 4-5 days!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 660 ✭✭✭JVB

Hi colt, I received my letter after 2 days but was told at the med it could take 2 weeks. I think that just gives them breathing space to process paperwork when thay are busy.

    Good luck!

Got letter stating that in the merit List plus results of Assessments. This is all very good, but it also said that I may have to undergo a medical. I have passed my medical ages ago.
    Whats it all about?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 CooperCop

Must be a standard letter issued to all for this stage of the campaign. If you have passed the medical then you should really have a separate letter from OH stating that you’re FIT FOR SERVICE.

    Phone them to confirm.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 721 ✭✭✭goodcopbadcop

yeah It must be just a standard letter for everyone still in it. It does apply to some people though, I got it two weeks ago and got vetting on saturday so it did apply to me but there are loads of people who have already done vetting medical etc

quick question about the vetting forms.

Who did you all use as referees, they are quite strict about who you use for it, im struggling to think of people i could use.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 144 ✭✭jim2008

Dont think they are strict about who you use, they didnt contact mine.Just make sure it is someone responsible just in case, Did you say you were 19 in an earlier post? if so you must have a teacher you could use??

    Goodcopbadcop,

AFAIK they don't normally contact the referees.

Do you have any friends, whose parents are in responsible positions?

    Hey all,

    Just read up on the application requirements for campaign 14 out of interest (I've just had my med for campaign 13.) There are a couple of interesting changes to the policies for recruitment. Mainly, the drugs policy, as outlined in the quote below from Consensia website;

'As a result (of the growing problem of substance misuse) PSNI is introducing a substance misuse policy which includes testing of biological material for history of use of substances listed under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Therefore, all successful applicants will be required to undergo a drug-screening test prior to being offered an appointment as a police trainee with PSNI. The biological material to be sampled as part of the pre-appointment process will usually be hair. Those who return a positive result will not be offered an appointment with the PSNI. This will not prevent applicants from applying for future recruitment programmes for PSNI when advertised.'

An interesting addition to the already time consuming process. I don't know if this will be automatically done at meds or if it is a seperate process altogether. I currently work for recruitment in the forces and we're relaxing our standards all the time. Drug misuse whilst serving is still zero tolerance but we're becoming more ambivalent to the importance of candidates using drugs prior to their application. It seems the police are going the other way.

Micky, would a social worker be acceptable to use?

    Goodcopbadcop,

Yes, I'm sure it would be fine.

Even a neighbour who has known you for years and could be described as 'responsible' would probably also be fine.

    Hi guys,

I have just read this thread with great interest and I have noticed some very beneficial information on it so firstly Thankyou to everyone who submitted it.

I have a few questions I hope some of you can answer. Im just finishing my law degree now at queens and, was wondering would there be an opportunity for me to put this degree to use after my 2 year probationary period, if I am successful in this campaign? Would there be an opportunity for me to train with or, play for the PSNI Gaelic team if I was successful? I understand a situational interview is part of the assessment centre procedure but what exactly does this include? Would I have an opportunity to talk about any charity work I have done or get a chance to mention any qualifications I have as this is not part of the application form?

    Cheers!

    Hi,
This might sound bad but I've had a bad year and went to my GP to discuss off, my own bat, in order to learn how to deal with stress. He wants this disclosed do you think I should forget it now? Let me know anyone in the same boat or anyone that knows the stance on this part of the medical.

The situational interview is not what you think it is. The assessment centre will be based around a senario you are playing, and you must remain in this senario throughout the role plays.

For each role play you get five minutes to prepare, this is time which you can write down questions or points you want to raise during the role play

The situational interview will be based around the same senario and they will basically read out a problem to you, and you then have to respond with how you would deal with the problem. It makes you think on the spot, and was in my opinion the hardest part of the whole test.

You dont get a chance to mention charity work etc at any part of the recrutiment, as far as i know it wont have impact on your chances of being recruited.

You can mention your degree in the application form, and im sure it will help you climb the ladder once in the Psni, but it wont help you get it as far as i know.
