    Hey

Me and my dad used to have a model plane. It was a glider, with the long wing span and white plastic(?) body, with an electric motor and prop.

Anyway we left our new one in the States and I want to get him a new one for his birthday. Where in Ireland can one purchase these model airplanes for good prices. Any help would be great. Sorry for lack of information, in a hurry.

Thanks guys, have you guys used any of these websites before?

Also do you have any recommendations?

Received a pm from a boards user regarding www.islandmodels.ie and he suggested the easyglider electric.

Also, I dont know if this sounds stupid as it is a glider, but is it possible to add wheels to the model easily? Hehe I have a bit of tarmac outside the house which would be pretty cool to take off from.:)

Not many trainer type gliders will be designed for carrying wheels. This is because wheels hang in the wind and act as airbrakes, slowing the model. But gliders are designed to slip through the wind with the minimum of resistance, keeping their airspeed up as much as possible.
If you would like an undercarraige to take off tarmac take a look at these pre-built ARFs at www.greenhobbymodel.com all of which have wheels:
Magister, Mini Mag, Skeeto. Look in the electric planes section.
You can see a video of the Mini Mag flying too.

Alternatively, if you are happy making your plane from a kit, using the wood, glue, etc there is a model by Aeronaut called Elektro Cat
    Here is a pic:
    diytra4.jpg
Elektro Cat from Green Hobby & Model, Dublin flying in Dublin Mountains
This model (kit) comes in two versions, one with wheels and a motor, and the other version is a pure glider (no wheels or motor). Since they are essentially the same, it is easy to convert it from one to the other, whichever version you get started with.
That is in the DIY kit section of the GHM website.
But you would be building your E Cat, since it is not a "pre-made".
The other ones I mentioned above are ARF, pre-built, where you do final assembly only.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, do you have any recommendations otherwise? Also is the plane I referred to in my last post any good?

And regarding the gliders without propellers, do alot of people buy these, id imagine quite a drop would be needed.

I mentioned 4 interesting ones, based specifically on what you said in post #1, taking into account what you added in post#4.

Do you want other suitable model suggestions, which have good flying characteristics?

    Here you are ....
    Eligo
    Easy Star
    Daisy

    shortys94 wrote:

Yes. But , like Eligo, you will grow out of it very quickly, as they are both basic trainers, most suited for someone who never tried it before.
    shortys94 wrote:

No drop is needed at all.
When flying from a flat field, and we happen to choose a propellerless model, a 30 - 100 metre bungee catapult fires them up to shocking heights. :)
But most of the time, if it is a flat field, we prefer to choose a power model with a folding propeller, like Daisy. The Easy Glider you mentioned above is a lightweight power glider of similar shape but made from elapor foam.

I'm going to have to try one of the 'easy to fly' power gliders soon ....

I'm getting fed up with the boat .... :p

How much are the models you mentioned coolwings?
The daisy seems to be suitable, also do thses models come with the controller included?

You would have to call GHM ... 4928776
    shortys94 wrote:

Yes. If you ask for a plane that includes all necessary items, then the controller will be included.

But all of those models are also available as a airframe only, for occasions when you already have the "innards" from a previous model, and all you want is a new plane to put them into.

Airframes get used up over time and bashing, but the innards live on going from airframe to airframe.

Yea I know what you mean, but the gliders are easy to patch up, I mean along the wingspan, lots of tweaking though. Thats what I dont want, one that is so sensitive that it is difficult to even get the thing into the air.

Did you look at the video of the 'Multiplex Easy Star' .....

    one on Coolwings list .....

    http://www.greenhobbymodel.com/

about half way down the pics & videos link page ....

Any views? ..... I just wonder if a Boatman (me) could fly that ? ...... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

    Pretty cool alright

I ment to give Green Hobby a call today about the price for everything all in for the Eligo or the Multiplex easystar + If they come in a kit form.

Here's another video .... notice the prop stops well before landing and it glides in to land ......

I do like the idea of a prop well away from the ground (for a Boatman! ) ....

    http://www.hobby-lobby.com/easystar.htm

coolwings .... what do you think of the EasyStar Combo in the link above, for a learner flyer? ...

(if I decide to go ahead I would try and buy locally)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,401 ✭✭✭shortys94

Does it not look to beginnerish?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 3,455 Mod ✭✭✭✭coolwings

The Easy Star will do what it says it will do. That is more than many so called budget model planes, which are ok only in a dead calm.
But a three channel radio ... ugh ! It would be not much use for flying later models.

Comparison between Easy Star and Eligo ...

I would think Easy Star is a shade stronger which is a plus for it.

Eligo has the conventional prop in the nose configuration, and that would be it's strength I would think.
Eligo is a bit dearer, but I would think a sale deal would be able to eliminate that difference.

Both are in the "capable of teaching yourself with this plane" league, but of course an experienced helper would make the learning far quicker, and fewer bumps on the way!

Coolwings - Could you say if this would be worth buying: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3Ch-RC-EP-1-6M-Wind-Surfer-EPII-RTF-Fiberglass-Glider_W0QQitemZ300123209108QQihZ020QQcategoryZ19164QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Upgrade to a 400 motor. Fly till it dies then is possible reuse some of the components?
Or how much roughly would an easystar or eligo with 3ch Radio electrics and battery come all in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,338 ✭✭✭hobie

    shortys94 wrote:

    yep !!!! ......
    Specifications

    All-up weight Approx 680g
    Wing Area 24dm2
    Motor Permax 400 (included)
    Channels 3 (Throttle, Elevator, Rudder)

that would suit me ok .... :p

CW ..... I'll talk to Green hobby next week and see what they can offer me (with a 4 ch. radio)

I have 'gota' get out of these $$$$$$$ boats .... ;)

That video is very blurry and indistinct. The fact they put such a video up to show it off would make me cautious. I would not evaluate the model based on what I saw.... it might be great - or it might be rubbish.
The photos of it look nice, but looks don't fly a plane as you have guessed by now.
Did you notice? It gives no indication on whether the Hong Kong radio is on a legal or illegal frequency. It just says "Futaba type radio"
Now I think I will get into my "Lamborghini type car" (it has 4 wheels just like one) and head off home .... c ya :-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭g5hn710m4xpdwy

Heh, Good point. I saw the "Futaba type radio" and smiled. Im sure its to help find matchs or to sell it better. How ever the shiny face plate for teh radio does look nice:D

Well .... talking to the Boss of our local RCC today and explaining it would be my first a/c he said ...... go for it .... ;) .... there are a number of them already in use in the club and I rem he did stress that Multiplex have a great reputation .... they do what it says on the box ....... :)

The plane is really the cheap part of the project ..... I can always get a more sophisticated one later .... the real money is the radio and his advice (and coolwings as I rem) is get a computer radio and take it with you through all the planes I might have in the future ..... I need a elevator/tail/motor control craft to get me going ...... that's all .....

ps. he said even if I don't get a plane get a FUTABA computer radio ..... :D
    (with Buddy compatibility)

pps. rem it has a 4 1/2 foot wing span so if you hit anyone with it it wont feel anything like a toy ....

    another quote ..... 445.00 total

here's where the money is going ......

    lipo battery 45.00

    charger 30.00

computer radio 220.00 (inc 4 decent servo's that come with it)

so you can see 295.00 is long term use for future a/c .....

it would be great if you already had a charger/suitable radio but I don't :(

What about the conventional radio? How much?

I know a computer radio is the way to go, but I dont mind really as I dont plan to be buying lots of models.

    Hey guys

I just stumbled across this thread......

    My advice is: DON'T!

DO NOT under any circumstances consider buying any of this RC stuff!

If you find these start-up prices a bit too much for you, I can predict severe misery for you in the future if you do go ahead! I know, I've been there, I thought I'd just buy one cheap plane for fooling around with. Now, a year or so on, I've got an incurable addiction that has taken over my budget, my thoughts, my time, and my house!

(I am however, very, very happy, and its worth every cent!)

    :) Chris

Well I ordered my Easystar this morning ..... inc. Futaba radio and 1800 Lipo/charger ....

It's costing a small fortune with the radio spec and Lipo but I don't mind ....

    after all ....

    it was Coolwings $$$$$$ idea !!!!!! ...... :D

ps. delivery tba .... they keep selling out !!!!

pps. They flew a 2 engine Multiplex Twinstar in a firm breeze, while I was there ..... I must say I was quite impressed ..... :)

Popped down to the local RC club on Sunday to see some of the action ......

I suspect my 'Easy' is going to look fairly tame when compared to some of the fabulous aircraft on show ..... :(

but, the guys said don't worry about it .... we all have to start somewhere .... :)

was talking away to a guy when in the distance a very loud thud !!!! ...

..... this is going to be bad, he said .......... a few minutes later some of the guys returned with a hundred pieces and a total write-off .....

a/c went nose down under power with no control from the pilot possible .... ..... brand new a/c .... only 4 flights ..... very experienced pilot .... I saw it b/4 it went off ..... looked like a Piper Cub style (high wing) .... approx 6 foot wingspan and very smart model ..... practically nothing left except perhaps the engine ... :(

Sure hope that doesn't happen to Easy Star's ....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭g5hn710m4xpdwy

How much did your Easy come all in and delivered?
I cant see myself going to aircraft clubs anytime soon so I would be teaching myself more or less

    550.00 ....... :(

but the computer radio .... Lipo batt .... Lipo charger .... upgrade on the ESC to suit the Lipo .... was a major part of it .....

ps. oh and the radio comes with 4 servo's that can be used on the next a/c
