Flying to London tomorrow and just wanted to make sure I'm clear.

No liquids more than 100ml(or is it 200ml?). This includes hair gel, creams, make up, drinks & toiletries (or does it?). Are they strict on this ?

All of the above if less than 100ml have to be placed in a bag (can I bring a bag myself or do I have to use their one?). I fly alot but for some reason I cant remember...when you are walking through the metal detector do you have to remove everything from your pockets (notes, paper, plastic) or is it just metal & electronic things ?

If I have toiletries that are more than 100/200ml and I put them in a smaller container so taht they are less than 100/200ml is that ok?

Fekkin terrorists make things so complex.

    http://www.dublinairport.com/at-airport/airport-security/EU_Liquids_Regulations.html

anything in a container over 100ml will be taken off you. all liquids, gels, pastes, etc must be in a clear bag, no more then 20cm x 20cm. London airports are very strict.

Do they search through the bag & does lip balm count ?

what i find more disturbing here, is that you cant go a simple flight without lip balm :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,713 ✭✭✭✭jor el

Lip balm is included, I've eh, heard. You also can't bring any drinks, or opened bottles, through the security check. You can however bring anything you buy at the other side on to the plane. You can put whatever you want into checked baggage though.

As far as I know, liquids will show up on the scanner, so if you have any hidden in your carry-on bag then they will stop you. You may have it simply taken away, or they might hold you for questioning, especially in London.

Yup, madness! It might not count though, I just want to make sure my luggage doesnt get searched because I accidently left lip blam in it.

Important thing to remember as said above is that this only applies to carry on hand luggage. Your checked baggage does is not subject to these rules. So if you do have a suitcase, put all your toiletries and such in there, and just keep stuff you need for the flight or upon landing in your hand luggage.

What i do is keep a few of the ziplocked 20cm x 20cm bags in the laptop bag, as spares, and then have one which lives in the laptop bag permanently, with a 100ml tube of toothpaste, a packet of paracetamol tablets and a couple of 100ml bottles of shower gel and shampoo. This bag can be taken out with the laptop for x-ray screening, and it's a very painless process.

If I'm going for longer than an overnight, or with someone, then the extra stuff goes into the suitcase, but I've still got the hand luggage stuff 'just in case'.

I left for London last Saturday from Knock and the girl I was with had lip balm and an aerosol in her bag leaving knock and brought on the plane without realising.

On the way back leaving London there were so many more checkpoints and she had to put her lip balm and other things in a plastic bag. She had to dump her lighter and there was a huge container with 1000's of them in it (strangely all I could think about was how big the explosion would be).

Even leaving knock I could leave my runners on but leaving the London airport I had to take them off and they frisked every fifth person.
Also you can buy the plastic bags in the airport, I think it was 4 for 1 pound.

Yeah, 'cos there's been so many planes blown up recently by Terrorists. Why, just last week I heard about one using a bottle of water and a packet of crisps to make a bomb.

(I seriously don't understand this recent terrorism paranoia, what exactly caused the new restrictions in the past couple of years?*)

(I mean post 9/11, the restrictions came a long time after that)

Everytime I have been through Gatwick Airport, there were people giving out the clear plastic bags as you were in the queue for security. I was there about 3 weeks ago and they were still giving them out.
Just to be on the safe side lip balm and other cosmetics should be put in the bag. Its no big deal really especially when you are given the bags.

Basically put everything possible into your check in luggage....everything else has to go into a clear bag as was said above!

I dream of the day when you can be treated like an adult in an airport and on a plane, and not subject to millions of regulations. To veer slightly off topic, the most baffling and ridiculous one has to be the one where all window blinds have to be open for takeoff and landing. What is that about? If someone can enlighten me as to the official reason I would be grateful.

Because they foiled an attempt to blow up a plane (least year) I think. They had brought liquids onto the plane to make a liquid explosive. It was after that that the restrcitions were brought in.

I think I heard before somewhere that its a safety precaution in case the plane crashes ... that way rescue crews can have an idea whats going on inside the plane and similarly people escaping can see if there's fire outside. I'm not certain thats true though because I can't remember who told me, they may have been blowing sh1te.

I was in Dublin airport last week in the queue for security and everyone was dumping their water and soft drink bottles everywhere before they went in. It looked a mess. This lady had just bought loads of **** (make-up over 100ml prob.) in Brown Thomas and she completely forgot about the whole liquids thing - she had to rejoin her check-in queue. She was....upset to say the least. :D

I was completely confused about the shoe removal - some people took belts and shoes off and others left shoes on and belts off. I just had sandals on so I took them off no probs.

I think it was a case that the UK Police uncovered a plot to smuggle liquid explosives on board planes, though I don't think anyone was actually arrested in connection and no actual evidence (other than someone suggesting it could be possible) was ever found.

The goal was to create a media storm and stir up panic in people so they'd once again support the war in Iraq. Worked for a while there. Also of course it was a great excuse for the thevin' bastids in customs to confiscate your duty free so they could bring it home themselves

Eh you're duty free is purchased after the security checks so its ok to take on board. mow of course you may encounter difficulty say traveling via the UK to some place else whee you buy it in Dublin and get it taken off you in the UK. So there's a lesson for ya all.

Wasn't the liquid thing in response to someone Allegedly being found with a liquid explosive in a bottle or something?

I know the shoe thing was about yer man that had a bomb in the sole of his shoe and tried to light it but the matches wouldn't light.

I've flown about 4 times in the last 6 months to various European destinations and London. Each time I had a lighter in my hand luggage and on no occasion did the security searchers (here or abroad) say anything..

I think that most of these security measures go too far. The disruption caused shows that the terrorists have already won.

As I've said before, diabetics can get their sharps and what is effectively poison on without ever being asked for their letter from the hospital, and in most cases, without the stuff even being noticed.

Add a digital watch, wire and marzipan (denser) instead of sausages.

A lot of people with diabetes use pens with needles less than 10mm long - not a threat.

Last time I travelled thru Leeds Bradford airport (terrible airport btw) lipstick, lighters, liquids and chewing gum were banned from handluggage completely! Although when you got to the one and only departure lounge you could buy as much gum, water and cosmetics as you liked..... Conspiracy, anyone?

What I heard was that the liquids had some vague possibility of being made into an explosive but it would have taken a few hours, on a flight that was much much shorter

After reading this thread, I don't think I'll ever fly anywhere again
    what a load of rubbish

Isn't there some sort of chemical scanner thing invented yet that they could use? Or, a sniffer dog.
It's not as if bombs made from liquids are exactly a new thing like.

A lot of the security checks are excessive,

How many terrorists have they foiled in the last 12 months due to these stringent practices?

    None.

And how many people have been inconvenienced / missed flights?

    Loads.

That particular plan was unworkable, however there are other possibilities and they are mitigating those possibilities.

does anyone get suspicious of the amount of terrorist plots which are supposedly foiled in the uk?

there seems to be one every week or two, despite there only being one serious attack in London in the last couple of years

are these police just brilliant at their jobs? why dont they stop all other crimes before they happen
