Ive never even heard of thing on a string before this thread.
Hoppin Mad was the closest thing i played to it.
Simple idea, you control 4 balls bouncing and must bring them over colourful landscapes without bursting them off enemies!
Sounds like a simpletons game but its fierce addictive.

The first version was called Cataball.

    You can download it here:
    ftp://arnold.c64.org/pub/games/h/Hoppin_Mad.Elite.+3hp-3532.zip

There seems to be no vids online.

Lads out of interest, what C64 emulators do ye use?

Ive being using CCS64 for years for some reason, never parted with it.

Vice seems to be the emulator of choice, going to give it a bash again.

I started out using CCS64 from 1998-1999/2000... but then I switched over to winvice from 1.16 (currently 1.21)... it's the best of the lot so far. Vice is also available under linux.

did c64 have space hawks, used to play it on the amstrad, great game

Those are my top too right there.
THe last ninja 2 is one of the most imaginative games ive ever played.
Some of the tracks have the most spine tingling synths ive ever heard on the C64, real phat basslines.
Has to be my favourite game of all time.

Another game that was as addictive as sex, was Wonderboy.

My old man went through at least 3 joysticks trying to clear that game, no exaggeration.
I remember he beat it one night and i wasnt there, so he cleared a 2nd time just to show me the ending.
That was the last game he ever played, boy the memories i have of it.
Wonderboy on the 64 was good , but its real home was the SMS to be honest. The sega port was amazing. The sequals are even better , Wonderboy3- the dragons trap was probably the highlight of the series (IV on the meg was good , but really just an updated II...er if you follow me)

    Hey guys!

Don't know if ya know about this site or not I found it last night after seeing a South Park episode that reminded me of an old C64 game called Aztec Challenge. You need a flash player to play the titles and some are extremely buggy.

Hope you get some enjoyment from them :)

I found a website that lets you play java-based C64 games online last night.

    http://www.jac64.com/games/special-10.html

    Seems to work really well.
Its obviously just some web java emulator thingy but its the job.

Controls are Crsr Arrows & Left Ctrl or sometimes Right Ctrl. :p
Runstop = Esc, to get you out of the trainers.

Make sure you click the game screen to activate controls.
If theres still no response just click Joystick 2.

Parallax by Sensible Software... there's a game with a 13min sid tune starting out - a real funky tune. :D

Seriously though - anyone get far into this SHMUP back then?

I was a Speccy owner, but much later I got a C64 and loved Wizball, Uridium and Sanxion.

Yeah, Wizball was great - remembering the review didn't excite me much - but I started playing it - and collecting the paint droplets - it was an excellent idea - especially when you could go between levels...
and those lovely hectic shmup bonus levels. The C64 sid guitar tune was amazing!

Speccy version just wasn't the same!

The Way of the Exploding Fist was pretty good, although IK+ kinda kicked its ass, I used to love Bruce Lee on the C64, pretty good.

Overall though, and I know this is off thread, I preferred my Spectrum, all of Ultimates best stuff was here, and Quazatron was sooo much better than Paradroid!

Klax was solid. Fiendish Freddie's circus was pretty good too, so was that Fido's Quest game. But Fiendish Freddie's was the best :)

Trevor (Smila) Storey has done some fantastic remakes of C64 games. The multiplayer Jet Set Willy is hilarious to play, not to mention Paradroid which has to be one of the best C64 games imho.

Lemon64 is also a fantastic site for anything C64 related.

And KWED for all the sid remixes, especially recommend Cirdans awesome cover of Last Ninja which is an all time favourite! :D

    Ah the C64GS cartridge!
Used always play that on my friends 64.

Came with a soccer game on it as well as those 3.

I only downloaded it recently to have a game of fiendish freddys!

Anyone come close to finishing any of the Freescape games - Driller, Darkside, Total Eclipse or Castle Master? Darkside was the easiest and quickest to complete.

Darkside involved shooting orbs on poles that connected to a power grid back to a super weapon... once fully charged would blow up Eavth. It was a great incentive to find the best way to quickly cut as many lines as possible since you bought yourself time the slower weapon recharged. Still a great game.

Driller - was the first and the music was really atmospheric - a haunting halloween kind of track. Involved drilling for >50% gas to be released in each of the 16 sectors. Fun game - but over 3 hours play on the c64 version compared to 1 hour (faster screen updates) on the amiga.

Total eclipse - never got too far in that - Garnish Yellow and that loud buzz it would cause on that old tvs - remember that?

Castle Master - On the Amiga - got into the castle courtyard but I didn't go much further... the engine lost the magic by then I guess. The music was nice - but annoyed after repeating so soon.

Hmmm... best C64 games... Turrican, Turrican 2, Creatures 2. Flimbo's Quest was a good one too, though you only had about 20 mins to complete the entire game (or else spend all your money on extra time). I'm probably one of the few people who actually liked Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles... though I could never get any of the weapons!

Hmmm... what else... Sly Spy Secret Agent - just for the music... Oh yeah, Ace! I was amazed by the digitised speech! Midnight Resistance... Though I needed the infinite lives cheat to get any decent way into it, and it always seemed depressing at the end when you lose most of your keys and had to leave some of your family behind... X-out, Armalyte...

    Double Dragon 3!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭hamster

Ace was one of the earlier games that impressed me - I like the speech and the mid-air refuelling and how the play linked in with the map.

Creatures 2, easily one of my favourites! In fact I loved anything by the Rowland Bros although Mayhem was a bit of a let down.

God I'm all misty eyed remembering some of the aforementioned games from my wasted youth . A couple of others I'd add to the list of c64 greats are Lords of Midnight , Auf Wiedersehen Monty , Starquake & Cj's elephant antics (this was a great budget game). Emelyn Hughes Soccer was a decent soccer game. Armalyte , last ninja 2 & Green Beret have already been mentioned & these were as good as anything I can remember on the C64 .

Midnight Resistance: Absolutely loved that game. WTH was up with the end badguy, I remember him being an eyeball that shot worms at you... I also loved that at the end you could choose to save your family or buy more guns, I always bought more guns :D

    Other great ones:
    Pang
    Bubble Bobble
    Silkworm
    Live and Let die
    Zool

There was a few others which I can't remember the names of. One was a very addictive game when you played a kangaroo and you had to get a boomerang to a point on the map. As you turned the the boomerang turned

The other was a game where you had to drive along a rollercoaster course and land the jumps. I remember if you landed wrong you'd get these holes in your dash, if you got too many your car would be destroyed and you'd have to restart.

I believe that was called Stunt Car Racer if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah stuntcar racer, wireframe graphics, great game, saw a nicer looking version on the Amiga I think. Turrican 1 and 2 are still 2 of my favourite games on any system, I must have cleared them 25 times each, way ahead of their time and great music in them too. The only games with better graphics were maybe the Creatures series. Last Ninjas as already mentioned were way ahead of their time. Someone mentioned Vendetta, really wanted that because you have driving and on foot sections but I recall it being dissappoint. I think that it was a "System 3" game, just like Myth and the last Ninjas. Loved Myths title music too, used to load it up just to hear it.

Exploding fist was brill, the sequel was confusing as hell, anyone remember it, you wandered around some samey environments for hours apparently going in loops... I had a soft spot for the goonies, it was only 8 screens I think and I could only get to the 3rd one !

Microprose Soccer was the soccer game of choice, action replays and banana shots ! Top class. Honorable mention to Emilyn Hughes soccer. Tracksuit Manager was my management game of choice. Leaderboard was ahead of its time too for a sports game.

Ghosts and Goblins was everybodies favourite and I had a soft spot for the Dizzy games, completed Dizzy, TreasureIsland Dizzy, Magicland Dizzy and Fantasyland Dizzy. Again way ahead of their time. Codemasters by then just did some pretty shabby budget games but they hit gold with Dizzy, I also liked CJ's Elephant Antics with its infamous cheat.

I got a demo of a game called Rubicon once, never got the game, but the demo was great, always wanted it. Loved the original star wars too, plus of course yie ar kung fu. Salamander was my favourite shooter along with Cabal which was kind of different. My C64 was the Nightmoves / Mindbender pack, so I had sly spy, midnight resistance etc... funnily enough though I really liked Nightbreed and I don't know why. Still have the box for the machine plus the machine itself along with 3rd party disk drive and actionreplay4 up in the attic. My box of 500 or so games appears to have vanished though.

One of the first games I got was softaid, a compilation of mostly b-lister games, but there were a few a liked, Gumshoe and FRED which only had 3 levels but I could never complete the last one, always fell into quicksand that I couldn't jump over right at the very end.

No-one has mentioned one of the games I spent most of my time with yet though. Jumpman. Anyone else play that ? The other I spent a ton of time on that no-one has mentioned is "Rick Dangerous" kind of Indiana Jones / Prince of Persia type thing. I also like multiplayer on "Realms of Impossibility".

I still yearn for a fancy version of ace where you have to take off and land to complete your mission but still have some arcade action in the middle...

Any game that make me sit down and watch SOMEONE ELSE play it from start to finish has to be a contender for THE best game ever made.

Oh boy! :) Jumpman - I got this on disk and I sure do remember it. Collecting those bombs (collecting sound: diiiing) was easy enough if it was not for those pesky white dots (shotgun sound) that would come in from the edge of the screen.
What I loved about this game was the special themed levels like "Bombs Away" - a series of raining red bombs.... or that special level where you could shoot down UFOs (cue screaming downed craft! :p) - or that level with the bats or the disappearing platforms. God that was class wasn't it?

Oh let me load it up...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭hamster

Wow - that was a real commie rush just there. Whoosh! :o Thanks for reminding me of Jumpman again - and perfect with the keys.

    Some cool things about Jumpman.

    1. Cool Fun Introduction from Jumpman himself (or herself!) -Note the year 1983. An absolute fab game for it's time.
    jumpman1.png

    2. The groovy loading screen for Jumpman - quite short disk load.
    jumpman2.png

    3. One of my favorite levels called Vampire! where 3 bats start out asleep roosting on the top of the screen - but once you start collecting those bombs - the critters stir awake and start zoning in on your ass.
    jumpman3.png

    4. Jumping blocks. Those flashing blocks are larger that the white bullets that kill - these guys speed in and cause you to jump in a random direction... usually to your death. Used to drive me nuts. :D
    jumpman4.png

    5. Robots I. One of the first featured levels (this one has a sequel level later on under Advanced I think). This is easy enough just avoid the bots who don't even chase you but can cause problems if you are unlucky to collect the bombs in a bad order.
    jumpman5.png

    6. Every level has a cool title... one of my fave levels...
    jumpman6.png
Avoiding the raining red bombs that explode on the bottom of the screen or get you on the way down. (2 on the left)
    jumpman7.png

    7. Invasion. This is got to be one of the easiest level. Collect 1 bomb on the bottom right. But you get to shoot UFOs on the way down. Fun to collect some points... but you could lose a life here if you get hit at the start (at the top of the screen) when one of those critters come rushing in from the edge of the screen.
    jumpman8.png

    8. Several more levels like Builder where you collect pieces of ladders in exchange for collecting bombs adds variety to the game. But soon enough you get to the end of the beginner section (oops lost count - must be 10 levels). You can then do intermediate or Advanced or the whole lot or Randomizer.
    Cool end sequence!
    jumpman9.png

The best part of the disk game is that you get to save your highscores. I am amazed my old disk never went corrupt. I mean, how many seconds would you trust a floppy for these days? :)
    jumpman99.png

Gawd! We should have a Compo here - just as an excuse to play! :o
