    Hi All,
I'm thinking of investing in weights to bulk up instead of getting a gym membership. I'm a complete novice when it comes to weight training though. Since I dont have a a bench or indeed space for a bench should I only get dumbbells? Or what other equipment? Would they be enough to work with for the first few months anyway? If so what brand/weight/type? Sorry for all the questions!
    Thanks for you help.

There are some excellent weights in the Argus catalogue. I bought some weights there last year. I would give you a link but the argus site is down.

But remember its not the buying but the using that allows one to gain benefit. Too many individuals buy fitness equipment, use it a couple of times then it gathers dust. This is attested to by the huge amount of unused items available in the buy and sell. Oh theres an idea. Check some of these out:

Shame there is no pictures. Either way best of luck with your purchase.

Get the cast iron york 50kg set in argos, or second hand. The plastic vinyl weights are poor- bulky and break down, and have low resale value.

As you get stronger you can buy additional weights in argos cheaply.

I don't mean to drag the thread off topic but could anyone advise where I could get a medicine ball, preferably covered or even a selction of medicine balls.

They could also be used as weights for beginner ;) so not THAAAT OT

These are the exact ones i got. They are very good and I'd agree with your statement on the plastic vinyl weights. 50 kg is good for a beginner but in time you' ll have to get some extra weight and this can be bought cheaply enough from argus too.

I was in a similar position to you a while ago. I searched and searched for medicine balls. I went to places like Elverys and the prices here are extreme to say the least.
I finally tracked down a great place to get medicine balls. That is the Martial arts shop on the corner of were mary street and capel street intersect. Its called mullens or something like that.
I got a 5kg leather med ball for 33 euro.
they stock other sizes e.g. 3kg, 10 kg.
The price may seem a lot but believe me its not. Good quality and well worth the investment.
