I don't want to be too critical of something that isn't even out, but I've no confidence in Will Smith making a good Neville.
However, I'll make my peace with him as long as they're faithful to the book. (Although from the trailer I don't expect it
.....the panic scene where what looks like a missile hits the bridge, looks like the book wasn't flash enough
    )

Is this pretty much the same story as Omega Man?

They're both based on th book by Richard Matheson.

The book is one of my favourites, its fantastic and I advise anyone to give it a read before the movie comes out. I think they have gone down completely wrong path though. It shouldnt be a mega blockbuster with Will Smith starring...

I just hope they stay as close to the original story as possible. The Omega man was a joke.

I can't see this being any good. As a fan of the book, this looks terrible. But maybe it'll be a good film in itself although I doubt it. Will Smith can unfortunately only play one character; Will Smith, and like an above user said, they're going with the flashy flashy look. I expect a few cheap suspense moments. Smith screaming 'Thats RIGHT!' while he beats somebody up and I wouldn't be surprised if they changed the damn ending...

I'll give it a fair chance all the same.

i hope they dont waste this excellent product placement opportunity.
    i can see it now,
150 minutes of will smith going thoruhg different vacant department stores.
trying on cons, listening to ipods, playing xbox.
maybe he can even browse the dvd section for a while so i know what movies are avialble to rent locally...

Not a bad teaser trailer, distinct 28 days later in New York kinda vibe to it.
And by the looks of it I would say many millions have been blown creating that empty New York ;)

I'm going to give the film a chance. No use writing it off before it's even released. The trailer, especially the bridge scene had a very War of the Worlds feel to it.

Too bad it doesn't have an I am Legend feel to it. Y'know, the book it's actually based on? Ah, ignore me. I 'm feeling bitter today.

    I Am Legend.

All the shots in the film of New York packed full of people and the bridge etc are added in and werent in the book if I remember. They HAVE to stay true to the original ending though. If they dont I'll cry.

Well were was the section where he had flashbacks to when it all started happening, but yeah, none of that bridge stuff/packed NY stuff was in it to my memory

Ditto, but it wouldn't surprise me either if they do change it. I'm preparing myself for the worst!

The Charlton Heston one? I actually really enjoyed that.

As for this, the trailer looks a bit too "blockbuster that didnt quite make it" shame.

Book was fantastic, teaser looks allright too!

Book was great, and while the film seems to take a lot of liberties with it, it also looks decent.

Ahhh, so this one of those read-the-book-first things :)

I dunno, I think it might be better to not read the book and have a general feeling of apathy toward the film, rather than fall in love with the book and tear your hair out in the cinema when Will Smith starts cracking one-liners at the vampires :)

Arrrghhh Omega Man is one of my favourite films and Will Smith is one of my most hated actors. Will be avoiding this one for definate. I though Nicholas Cage was pencilled in for this!!!

ok, not sure if I'm remembering this right, but I saw the vincent price film years ago and was wondering if someone can clear this up. At the end
is Price killed by the other survivors as he's trying to explain that he has the cure?
or am I thinking of a different film?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,480 ✭✭✭projectmayhem

honestly i never saw omega man (was told it was rubbish, and it looks rubbish), and didn't know much about the book. didn't even know this film was being made, but the trailer impressed me quite a bit. maybe it's because i didn't read the book, but i'll rectify that as soon as i finish neuromancer :)

Just bought it on play.com. Reading a brief synopsis it seems different to what I thought it would be from the trailer. Can't wait to read the book now.

You're going to love it, its brilliant. Let us know what you think! Eh, also, Im pretty sure the book isnt set in New York city...maybe some one can correct me on this ?

Yeah from what I remember it was Los Angeles..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

    It was indeed LA.

It's funny, adaptions of 30 Days of Night and I Am Legend, my two favourite vampire stories, are coming out near the same time and I have completely contrasting expectations. I hope this shocks me and kicks ass.

I haven't read the book so this is my initial response to the trailer having no preconceptions. It looks interesting. A very good teaser trailer, giving lots of suspense but revealing nothing.
Unfortunately that picture of a book with vampires on the cover may well have revealed something...

So how did Omega Man compare to the Book, I actually enjoyed the movie as it had some nice creepy moments in it. Must read some of Richards books this summer, although think I'll have to buy them off Amazon as never seen them in Easons.

Well watched the trailer looks visually impressive, Francis Lawrence, the bloke who directed Constantine is the director so it should look good visually, Will Smith is the wrong person for this roll.

you can find them pretty cheap in the fantasy/sci-fi section of waterstones.

If I remember, it was quite different to the book. It used mutants instead of vampires for one.

anyone else read the write up on I am Legend in this month's empire mag? Looks like we wont get to see any clips of the vampires until the film is released. The director said that they arent really vampires or zombies either..

He did say the shot of the missiles hitting the bridges were for the flashback scenes. Also smith commented that it's hard work playing so many scenes on your own.

Is it possible the film will be as close to the book as we would like?

I only scanned over the article but the parts I read gave me hope

I don't think so - for one thing there'd be a real lack of dialogue with Will Smith on his own, so there might be more of an emphasis on flashbacks.

A move of 'I Am Legend' does interest me greatly, but a remake of 'The Omega Man' does not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 891 ✭✭✭rejkin

as far as i know its not vampires because its mainly based on the omega man story line so its mutants, which is really annoying cause the books story line was brilliant with the vampires in it :(

Yeah, I've just ordered it from play, god knows I could do with reading a book for once instead of staring at screens all day...
