idea for a sticky?

it's kinda been visited before, in the "your favourite place to photograph" thread, but it might be an idea for people to list places in their area to photograph; it was prompted by me being turned away from the gates at grangegorman, and wondering where else i could wander in the phibsboro area with the camera.

so far, i've been to (within walking distance of my house) the botanic gardens, glasnevin cemetery, broadstone park and blessington basin, the phoenix park, and along the canal.

    anywhere else?

Another idea for a sticky would be - Photographic events coming up. Things worth attending and photographing.

As for things around for you to photograph, I think you've done the main ones in that area.

I think it's a vaild idea alright, if we could get a format, say Dublin: and the above, and add to it.

There's enough of us around the country to get a pretty decent list up, like, if I went to Cork city (God help me) I wouldn't have a clue where to go.

You should be so lucky.. beyotch..

It's a good idea, but may lead to a horribly cluttered thread. May be better to do a month by month one, sticky it for the month and then after the month unsticky it and sticky the next month's thread... But hey, anything seems like a good idea after a night in the pub.

well i think you should look inside your house!
look at gardens, plants, even your old toys!

    thanks

What about a sub forum, with a thread per county/city? Has the advantage that it'd be easy to find the location you're looking for, but the disadvantage that it's less visible, and might not get much traffic

I don't think the 'not much traffic' would matter, it's a forum that would be used at the end of the day,

And there's no stopping it in Ireland, we all take plenty of holidays.

I wonder would the admin mind giving us another Sub Forum? :D

How about Rymus starts the thread, everyone posts and Rymus occasionally updates the original post with a list.

I think mods don't have an edit time limit do they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

    no thankfully :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

What about links to a flickr map? I know it's horribly orientated towards the flickr people - but the functionality is hugely useful - you can show a map with all the shot from a particular group pool in it: http://www.flickr.com/groups/boards_ie/pool/map?mode=group (the boards group map)

So we could have a 'what to shoot' group, and if all the pics are geotagged, you just go to the map for that group and you can browse around your intended area and see what's to shoot there... we can back it up with suggestions in a thread/sub-forum...

sounds like a project that you'd like to say... work on to stave off boredom on a Friday? I really like the idea of the flickr map, now that the mapping on there has gotten so much more detailed.

Hope you have better luck than I had, with this thread. :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

I could tentatively agree to taking up some sort of administrative role... only problem is, you can only geotag your own photos so people would have to do that themselves (it's a simple case of dragging and dropping onto the map, in case you haven't tried it), and submit them to the pool... either that or we just use the boards pool as it is already... I dunno. Maybe the organising needs odne more at the thread/post end rather than the flickr end, with explanations of the locations on the map...?

it'd also be an idea that if the suggested site is serviced by public transport, that the relevant buses, etc., are specified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

I think what we need is an established format, and everyone picks a location or two and sticks to the format, something like this:

(yes, it's friday afternoon and I am bored)

    Powerscourt house & gardens

    Map link

    Transport/directions
Follow signs from N11 just south of city, same exit as Enniskerry.
Dart to Bray & 185 to Enniskerry, 44C from Dublin City Centre (Townsend Street) to Enniskerry Village.

    Admission details/prices
    House & Garden:
    • Adults €9.00, Student/OAP €7.50
    • Child (U16) €5.00, Child (U5) Free

    Waterfall:
    • Adults €5.00, Student/OAP €4.50
    • Child (U16) €3.50, Children (U5) €3.50

Good for: Flowers & plants – macros, trees, some landscape views, waterfall

    Example shots

    Botanic Gardens, Dublin

    Map link

    Transport/directions
Buses 83, 19, and 4 go very close to the entrance. For driving, follow signs for N2 from city, then Glasnevin, and turn off to the right after the bridal shop, then left and left again onto Botanics Rd. €2 for parking.

    Admission details/prices
    No entry fee

Good for: Flowers, plants, squirrels – on a rainy day you can hide in the glasshouses. Look for the Japanese maple in the rockery area!

    Example shots

    Sally Gap/Glendalough

    Map link

    Transport/directions
You can get one of the day trips to Glendalough with the St Kevin’s Bus or just follow the map route if you’re driving

    Admission details/prices
No cost except transport and munchies! The car park further down is €4 and you need exact change, though.

Good for: Landscape, moderate hills/mountains – huge waterfall at Glenmacnass on the way down but you can’t get close to it. Valley at Glenmacnass good with a telephoto to pick out details. Nice little river, moorland (very peaty and heather in the summer) and some lonely trees just before the Sally Gap crossroads. At Glendalough itself you’ll find lakes, forest, an old old graveyard with celtic crosses and one of those round towers, and a ruined church.

    Example shots

    Dublin Zoo, Phoenix Park, Dublin

    Map link

    Transport/directions
Buses: 10 to Phoenix Park. For driving, look for the big park on the map. :-)

    Admission details/prices
    €14 for adults
    €11.50 student
    €11.00 OAP (Danny???)

    Good for: Animals

    Example shots

Jazus Julie Friday really is your day isn't it :D?

Great idea, the layout. A subforum, with a seperate, locked thread for each province plus Dublin where a mod for each thread can be PM'd with data. They can keep it updated and tidy. Not too much work once it is up and running. It could turn into a mighty resource and even a bloomin' book(let).....maybe??? It might even incentivise me to get off my shaggin ar$e more often and take a trip.................

HOLD on a minute.......wait until something gets set up properly or it'll be all over the shop ;)

PS: I just noticed the OAP bit...........LOL. I'll race ye up a hill anyday. It would probably kill though...

Julie - fair play. Brilliant work, and great format.

Now, just to get it setup, and properly administered, before I start getting in to a giddy Friday mood. :D I just have some new lenses to play with this weekend.

ach if anyone feels like getting stuck in and putting it up here, we can copy 'n' paste it into a new home, if we get one organised.

You can just link directly to Yahoo maps, which is what Flickr is using anyway. Here's Glendalough for example

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

Yep, but what I meant was for the sake of adding them to a flickr group pool, and when you view the map you can then see all the shots in the pool marked on it, rather than a separate link for each person's pictures.

Is the Yahoo map like the google one where you can mark paths and placemarks, and save it?

Danny, was that a post-pub bump, then? ;)

Hey ... great idea ... if you need a hand setting it up I'd be more than happy to pitch in ...

I'd also like to see either a separate sub forum on events and meet ups etc or combination of the the two ... I missed a few this weekend because I was not on the ball watching the main thread ...

Though I'm not sure we need too many subforums ... one of the things I like in boards is the lack of excessive structure ... :p ... everything is nicely contained in a few, rather than many places ...

Nope! I'm off it at the moment. What made you think that? Was I out of tune? :D;)

thought maybe a sticky might be nice.

What's the general concensus, then, in terms of structuring this? Subforum/sticky? We don't want too many of either because they tend to get in the way/lost/ignored, but at the same time, as leinsterman said stuff gets lost in the general melee (sp?) that is the main forum. We could do with somewhere to point people for locations to shoot - and also, I'm been mulling over the idea of a shared calendar (google has them) for upcoming events so you can see them all at a glance. It'd be easier with a couple of people administering that, and then anyone with a suggestion could pm them to have it added in.

I'd prefer a subforum ... to keep it out of the way of the main forum ... but I'm sure this would increase Ryan's job ... in terms of moving threads ... the nice thing about a sub-forum is you can have sticky thread within it too ...

If you want a show of hands you could post a poll ... but perhaps the best thing to do is make and executive decision and just try it out for a while ... if it doesn't work then you can always chage it later ...

I also like the shared calendar ... perhaps this could be suggested to flickr ... it would be a great idea for group forums in flickr ... and then we can sticky the link to it within the new sub-forum ...

yes to the shared calendar idea.. Very handy indeed.

I'd be for either subforum or sticky.. Problem with pinning all your ideas on a subforum though is the application process.. It can get turned down and you're left with a poorly thought out Plan B.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,966 ✭✭✭elven

    How's this look?

(best if you switch to 'month' view)

Is it worth applying for the sub-forum, and see if it gets approved, or just doing a sticky?

Well I'd suggest we apply ... and if refused well then we go for a sticky instead ...

What would you call the Sub-forum ? how about something like "Events, Forum Meet-ups and Great Photographic Locations" ?

Can you give me access to the calendar ?

I want to add the Guy Gowan event ...

move away from the idea of "Events" for the purposes of naming I'd say. Lest we forget there's already a general events board under Sys.

Calendar looks good, presumably the creation and editing of events will be carried out by a number of people?

Yeah if this is the case then Jools will need to send out the password to a select group ...

Alternatively ... you can set up an event in your own google calendar and invite the shared calendar ... in this way the calendar admins can accept the invite ... and anyone with gmail can put something into it via the invite system ... or evan via any outlook client ...

I was thinking of just giving access to a couple of people that could be pm'd for submissions, save spam/duplication etc. Looks like yourself and simon have just volunteered :D

If you have a gmail addy I can add that, otherwise just give you the login for the account itself...

Simon I just gave your gmail account permission, can you see if you can amend it now?

At the risk of repeating myself. Would it work? There could be other threads for days out and stuff but the above would be the stickies which can be updated as needed???

The calander looks like a great idea. I hadn't used it before. Can I add something to it? If so do I need to be admitted to the inner sanctum? There is a haymaking festival on here next weekend I'd like to stick in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,381 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

    Haymaking? Sounds interesting.

Next weekend is also the Street Performance World Championship, being held around Dublin. (www.spwc.ie)

Through these boards, I'm finding more and more things to attend and photograph. I'm finding it hard to find a weekend when there is nothing on, so I can edit/post the images I've taken recently. :D

Mind you, this idea of linking all the events together is great. If I can help, let me know.

Hey Rymus what ever happened to this ?

Did it just die a death or are we in the middle of a application process ?

I'd like the see the shoot location/meets calendar in either a sticky or a sub forum (this would be me preference) ...
