Lentils, beans, etc. should also work, and are quite a bit cheaper.

I make my porridge with oat bran instead of normal oatflakes- it's fluffier and it's 15% protein and 15% fiber. Sometimes I put seeds in too.

Soya beans are lovely if you cook them in stock and with cloves of garlic. I eat them cooled with chopped peppers and spring onions through it. I like cheese too.

You have to eat lots of different protein foods to get all the amino acids you need because few foods other than meat have them all.
Even though meat has a higher percentage protein against weight, veggie foods often have a higher percentage of calories from protein because they don't have as much fat. So basically you can get as much protein with fewer calories if you know what you're doing.

If you're a woman be careful about iron too.

Not a bit of it.No plant source is a complete protein, either combine with dairy products or supllement with amino acids.

Yeah, but quorn doesn't exactly taste great, tried the Holland and Barrett soya protein chunks.....again not the nicest. Currently courting Protein bars as a supplement....not sure if they're really up to much though!

Get some good whey powder if you feel protein is lacking.

My younger (veggie) sister has started stealing mine.

I'm going to sound like a complete moron saying this. But to take on the protean after a work out I eat a 100g of peanuts and wash it all down with a pint of supermilk. Good Idea, Bad Idea

If they are JUST peanuts it's a great idea. If they are salted/roasted peanuts, still great for protein, but not so good in other ways ;)

Go for sources that are as unmodified as possible. Refinement of any food type just depletes the nutritional value of it.

I avoid dairy about 90% of the time because I find it creates quite the mucous build up within minutes of taking any. That's just a recent thing. Started to notice that about a year after I stopped eating meat. Anyone else experience that at all?

I'm vegan so I eat lentils, beans, tofu, green veg such as cabbage, broccoli and spinach, couscous, and soya milk in my porridge and cereal. Thats where the bulk of my protein comes from.

There is also a vegetarian forum if you need to know anything else about how vegetarians get x or get y etc

Eight essential amino acids are needed to make a complete protein.Dairy products, eggs and soya products(tofu, tempeh, soya drinks and desserts)all provide complete protein in themselves.
    Combining whole grains(unrefined wheat,rye,millet,barlet,spelt,rice,quinoa)
with pulses(beans, peas, lentils)and supplementing with small amounts of nuts and seeds also provides plenty of protein. All the essential amino acids are found in combinations such as beans on toast, lentil curry with brown rice, musli with milk, hummus made from chickpeas and sesame tahini, peanut butter sandwiches made from wholemeal bread. It isn't even necessary
to combine different food types at the samee meal since our bodies can store amino acids for later use.

would any of the vegetarians here be eating 300 grams of protein a day?

It is a direct quote from a pamphlet from the the Irish health organisation. If they are wrong, they are wrong. I thought they were right though, and it is just excess amino acids that the human body can't store for later use, in which case they are right. It also sounds right.
