Garda Open Day - 2007 Competition

I decided to open a new thread, I thought that maybe we were cramping the other thread. Competition 2007 will get under way in September - October 2007 and maybe the people who undertake this recruitment program can discuss here.

Attended today myself, A really good day and well worth the four hour round trip. the tour was really appetising and all students and instructors were really helpful and friendly. I had to ask the question of our two student Gardai.

Would it be worth applying to the Garda reserve as an indication to your commitment to serve and as a potiential experiance in later rounds of the competition, both student Gardai had varient views of this, and I can see either point but isn't it something to consider.

Yeah. went to templemore myself yesterday (2 hours drive there, 2 hours back). Nice place. i was told the recruiting might be starting in august. The sooner the better.

Hey folks, was meant to make the trip up myself but Mr.Sickness kicked in and hampered my trip up. Did many turn up on the day?!
Hoping to go for the next competition myself, pending my Leaving cert results!

I think there's another open day in September. The competition will probably be advertised in august and get underway some time after that.

Q for those that attended the Open Day...
I teach a Roma boy who is just starting 5th Year - he is very keen to apply to join the guards (and will not need any exemption on the Irish as he has better Irish than many in his class) - I was hoping to bring him down to Templemore for the September Open Day - were most of the attendees older than early fifth year - do you think it would be beneficial for him even at this early stage?

Hi. There where children there from primary school. Now obviously they where just getting a tour while the older people where getting information. but other than them. the majority of the people where 6th year and people finishing college. So i'd say bring him on down to the open day in september. he'll enjoy it as it was a good day and its a very nice campus.

How may of you guys are doing leaving cert or are in the age bracket 18/19???
I was just wonderin. I'm considering the Gardaí myself. I've just completed 1st year in college. I know there are benefits to finishing college and then joining the Gardaí (such as better pay and a degree to fall back on) but its a 4 year course and if i really want to join theres no point finishing it.

    What do ye think??
I've also heard that 18/19 is too young really to join because people are too immature at that age etc.

Hey Whassupp, im 18 in the leaving! will be 19 by december.

If you want you could apply anyway and see how far you get in the competition, if you make it you can decide, if you dont then college it is!
18 is the ''minimum'' age so your not too young, But at that age i suppose in an interview they would be looking to see maturity!:D

To the peolple thinking of joining the gardai at 18 or 19 or straight after school,Would they not consider getting some life experience first and then considering their career path.A lot of work in the Gardai is community related and is dealt with by experience and maturity of the local gardai. a 19 year old turning up to help deal with a family dispute just wouldn't inspire confidence.
I've seen young gardai from Store St and Pearse St Stations thrown into the deep end in Dublin at night having to deal with difficult situations because when these young recruits arrive that means the older Gardai can take up transfers to their preferred postings in local stations leaving recruits to patrol areas like Temple Bar with ZERO experience.

I would have to agree with Collied here. Having said that some young people are more mature than others. I'm a Student garda at the moment and I see alot of the younger people could have problems when we are become guards next week. I have some life experience behind at the tender age of 31. I have witnessed some distressing scenes when working at the training station. I got alot of abuse or people crying their hearts out to me. You will be faced with some very difficult situations and you have to be able to deal with them.

Im 23 and just finished a degree which involves a lot of law enforcment so I reckon this will stand to me.

The only thing is, i have a really dodgy knee which makes it difficult to run fast or for long periods, would i fail the medical/fitnes test cos of this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I've heard the vision requirements are very strict. If you're short-sighted should you basically not even bother?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

A friend got laser treatment and got in no bother..

What about if you have a really dodgy knee, but are still physically fit and able to run a bit?

Hey everyone! So who's applying now this month/Sept?? Can't wait for the advertisements to come out!!:D

Pretty good advice there. Joining the Gardai is a big commitment, and I personally think that 18 or 19 is a bit young. That said, I actually got advice about joining from a young Garda, about 23 years old and he probably joined at 19, but he struck me as being far more clued in than his years suggested. Everyone is different, you're going to get mature 18 year olds and immature 27 year olds. Being a 'mature' latter, I don't think I would have been ready for the Gardai even four years ago.
whassupp2, I wanted to quit my course after 1st year in college. I'm now glad I didn't. If you're really unhappy with it then speak to someone in your college about changing but don't make any rushed decisions. You may be glad of your degree in years to come.
Would like to hear from any 'oldies' thinking of joining! For example, what brought you to this decision?

    • When are the Open Days?
    • And do you just turn up and go in?
    • Or get put in a group and get a tour?
    • And, would they want you wearing a suit or what? Lol.

    Hey all!
Recruitment coming up any week now, very latest will be mid Sept! Keep your eye on publicjobs.ie!
Open day was on 24th May & there's another one on the 20th of Sept, would definately recommend it Chatmaster! I dropped them a quick line to confirm i'd be there in May but there's no need to I found out afterwards from the college! Just go down in comfortable clothes & it's on from 10 am until 3 pm.
It's great, you get to see everything & talk to the students down there at the moment!
What you guys fail on last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Dub22

Just checked the garda website and you need two languages in the leaving cert to be considered. How fúcking retarded is this country????? Because i didn't do a second language in my leaving cert SIX years ago i can't even be considered for a position!

    Joke!

I'm sure you did Irish. And you're using English now. And there are English exams in all leaving certs.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

Well, you need one language other than English and Irish. Plus i didn't do Irish.

english and irish count as two languages, but as u said u didnt do irish so yeah ure in a bit of trouble there alright.
how many other people i wonder only hanve english and irish as their two languages i wonder. this is what comes from the website it says....
A qualifying grade in two languages, one of which must be English or Irish, as follows:

English: a grade not lower that D3 at Ordinary Level,

Irish : a grade not lower than C3 at Foundation Level or D3 at another level,

Other language : a grade not lower than D3 at Ordinary Level,

They told me English and Irish were fine. And nothing was said at the interview about it, which is where they're checked...

I am not sure of the fitness tests but seriously, have you seen some of the lardos garda grads?? They would not be able to run 100 meters they are so hefty. Chief Wigam would be proud of them.

What a had thing to do. It's hard filling out this form. It's really putting me down. I'm 27 years of age and never felt as pathetic in all my life
    • Preparing to reach high standards
    • Making balanced decisions
    • Working with others
    • Pesuading others and taking charge.

Fair enough categories but I'm really struggling to put it all together. A nightmare. Painful.
