So if i catch him tonight then i win? Are they actually any good musically or do they just give free passes to anyone with a camera?

By the way how did you change your username?

The music is actually quite good and you dont need a pass to take the pics but that also depends on the venue so check with them first. Duke doesnt have any issues about people taking pics during his events but doesnt want flash used if possible (the standard for all gigs). I didnt even take mine with me last night.

PM Rymus re the name change as I think he is the only one who can do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

Actually rymus cant facilitate a name change... that would be board admins only!!!

re the music, Im not event going to try and promote it. tbh if you are not curious enough to check it out yourself then im not going to pimp it. there is a reason he sells out and why people come back two nights in a row.

and yeah... Bandon here I come woooohooooooo!! rymus if you are planning on shooting... keep to yer own side of the stage eh ;) lol

and there are no free passes. everytime I have shot at a DS gig I have paid for a ticket and shot from the crowd. I have never had a pass. so smart comments are kinda null and void for this one!

Wouldn't agree with that, I got my press pass and shot from in front of the crowd at the Vicar St gig.

FreeAnd.. It's a gig well worth going to. Great musicians.

Edit: Had that email ready to reply to ye, but might aswell say here: Nice work, very good for your first gig.

After 4 years, I was sick of sinecurea, so I fancied a change. Subscribers can change their name, by request.

I know Duke, I look after his myspace with him and his website, the forum etc.
Most of the venues he's been playing recently in Ireland don't give a crap about photographers. Some do - just check with the venue first. Nicest guy you'll ever meet, by the way.

    S.

I feel he has become the statue of liberty of gig goers, I’ve seen him from nearly every angle and backdrop now. But in saying that, I kick myself for not bringing my camera to his last Liverpool gig a few months ago. There was standing room at the side of the stage which would have produced some lovely photos with him on the piano and yer man chip bailey beating some kitchen ware on the drums in the background.
Well worth the money even if you leave your camera at home.
Cant wait to see him at Glastonbury this year, i think i'll leave my camera at home for his.

I simply said that I BUY my tickets and shoot from the crowd. making the point that DS promoters are not handing out press passes for the laugh like it was suggested.

It just happens that the tour crowd are decent and will allow you to shoot at the gig without a pass. That, as Steve said, is largely down to the venue, and then the tour crew.

I was just pointing out that the suggestion that just because you have a fancy camera you get a pass for DS gigs is crap.

Mike didnt have a pass. I bought the tickets and he came along, just the same as any other member of the audience.

Because you said there are no press passes. There are press passes - Al was saying that there are press passes. He is correct.

touchy, i think it was obvious they are not giving out passes hence the music must be good...maybe its just that almost everyone here not only shares a passion for photography but also have the same taste in music...this guy definitely gets the prize of most photographed..maybe that could be the next photochallenge?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭FreeAnd..

and i have to agree with Fajitas, Oriel - you did say there are no free passes...

By the way thanks for the details on changing the name, too much hassle even for a friday...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

The point I was making was not that there ARE NO passes, of course there are, there are for every event. I just made the point that they are not handed out to just anyone with a camera, which was the suggestion earlier in the thread.

Obviously there are press passes, Im hardly going to try and claim that wouldnt be the case. I just worded it badly, (tired and late) sorry Al, but in fairness I was hardly suggesting there are NO passes at all.

I guess that was just the point I was trying to defend. I was just in from the gig and reading posts where people were suggesting that any random photographer would just be given a pass to come in and have a go just pissed me off.

    Absolutly.

We were doing an interview a few hours before the show, walked into the dressing rooms, and without even asking who we were or what we were there for, we were being offered food, drink, anything. They had all the time in the world for us, which makes a big change.

Katie, I'm not starting an argument, but you said there was no passes, and I corrected you. I never said I went along with a fancy camera and got a pass - It was work for me. That's all! :)

I never said you said that Al.
    Fajitas! wrote:

I'm not arguing with anyone. No interest tbh. Simply defending an incorrect comment, albeit a bad defence.

I don't make a habit of coming on here and making points like this, I did last night because the comment annoyed me. Simple as that.

As for Mr Special being the nicest guy in the world, I dont think anyone could attempt to dispute that. Certainly not if you saw what I saw last night. You could not meet nicer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Ah, screw the 'I'm not having an argument' :p:D

    It's Friday after all :p

But seriously, it was just a question about getting the passes (Not an incorrect comment), nothing to get worked up or pissed off over - and considering that at least 4 of us here on Boards have shot one of his gigs, it was a bit understandable.

I thought I loaded that post with enough smilies so as not to get a reply like this.

    Oh well.

ah would you look at what i started...people need to lighten up, it was hardly realistic that this guy gives out free passes to anyone with a camera...my round about point was that this guy must be good because almost everyone here has been to see him...no need to be so sensitive and dont be upset that you had to pay while Al got in for free...next time just ask if they'll give you a pass..its suprisingly easy..(just arrange it in advance)...

Did someone ask where B0rg was recently? I miss that goofy ball of fun...

not to start another argument, but if you like Brian Kennedy's music, you'll like Duke Special. I can't believe how much hype this guy is getting, he's nothing special (excuse the pun!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

you should get a site ban for comparing duke special with brian kennedy. A site ban and a bloody good whipping :p

Just been to two this week for free (cos was working for them). I pay for tickets to support a decent act, pass or no pass. Al was working there is a difference.

Please do not presume that I am that petty.

ahh petty presumptions, now isnt that what got us here in the first place? You dont need to be so defensive on the issue, do you really still pay for tickets when you have a pass? Seems a bit odd to me but each to their own i suppose...either way i still think this guy must be the hardest worker in the business..his PR people are doing a good job too, i had never heard of him a few weeks back now he is everywhere i look..i even come here for a bit of peace and he seems to find me...if it wasnt friday..i'd cry

In the case of Duke Special, yeah I do. I am a musician and I support fellow musicians, especially when they do as good a job as he does, simple as that. Nothing odd about it at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,150 ✭✭✭FreeAnd..

but if he sells out all his shows does not mean that you are preventing one poor sole from obtaining a ticket...one day that could be me, probably not though..any curosity i had to see him has now been crushed..i believe he's changed, gone too commercial these days...its all about the money now...

and it does still seem odd to me..maybe not to you but it does to me..

Not that it is anyone's business, but I buy my tickets when they first come out. This week for instance I subsequently got guest passes. I then GAVE AWAY the tickets I paid for for free. So I didn't prevent any poor sole from seeing him thank you very much, quite the opposite in fact.

do you know his music? old and new? can you back up that statement?

actually, I dont really care/mind if you do or not. But I think that if you were familiar with his work you wouldnt say that, it is NOT about the money, any change in his music is for other reasons.

Ah now thats different, what happens though if you get a guest pass first? do you still buy a ticket after to support the music and then give this ticket away?

And as Al said, i was joking - if you got any of my earlier points you might find i had never heard of him a few weeks back (but a few weeks can be enough time for a person to change - if they truly believe)..

Mike - lovely shots. I love the.. jesus I can't remember which one now after reading all that - the one of the violinist (singer? I've had a few!) in the foreground and him in the background. Very nice. They all are.

And for the record - I think he's bland. Same as 99% of performers here. Lovely as I'm sure he is. Scuttles off into corner...
