Optimising diet for long sessions where concentration is important

This thread on the poker forum raises an interesting question regarding diet.

So we are going to be sitting on our arse playing poker for say 12 hours. Let's say a break is possible every 2-3 hours with an hour long break in the middle and the other breaks of about 15 minutes.

What would be the best structure for a diet in order to maximise concentration, stave off tiredness and of course not need to hit the loo between breaks?

I'm guessing it's be the usual advice given here: Regular smallish meals (every 3-4 hours), not many starchy carbs, low sugar and reasonable amounts of water.
Opinions on this and any ideas regarding specific foods that would help would be appreciated!

Well I would bring food with me to the table if possible. Oats before-hand, wholegrain bread for lunch - basically keep it to slow-release carbs and don't have alot of them. A tub of grapes beside you that you can pick at is perfect for just getting a small sugar hit if you ever feel like you need it.

If you really want to get into it I'd be looking at specific aminos, vitamins and nootropics, but foodwise I'd go with ^^^.

That's exactly what an ex-colleague used to do in long meetings/negotiations. It was a standing joke. In long meetings everyone else would be wilting after a while and losing their concentration while this chap would nibble on a banana/choc bar/sandwich and remain sharp throughout. He usually left the meeting with all his objectives achieved having drained everyone else of the will to live.

    Regards,
    Liam
