medium content..What Are Your Leaks?

    Low contend?
Ok, I know people don't like giving out this kind of info but if one or two do I might learn something.

I've started playing Hold em about 18 months ago (been a draw player all my existence, I've the pennies in a jar to prove it.) I don't have a great deal of spare time to play but I've done 'relatively' well, in that I normally just play (donk) tournaments and have more than (comfortably) covered my costs related to same and I think I can hold my own with a lot of the players on this site, (IMHO)

Since the start of this year I've been marking down each week 'NEW' things I have learned about myself and the game to see if I'm making progress at all ....Well I've now got some stuff written down and I can see where a few (quite a few) of my leaks where/are.

My questions. (PICK what you want from these)
My biggest Question....What are YOUR major leaks?
Does anyone keep records/notes like this on THEMSELVES?
Have they found them to be useful?
What tips/techniques do you use to spot your leaks whilst in play and how do you plug them?

    One or two leaks.
    * One of my leaks was that I lose focus/dicipline during games when I engage in banter and lose the killer instinct as a result. I forget the opponent is the enemy and sometimes will let people off the hook (this one bothers me a little as I enjoy the banter with some) ....I don't do IPODs.....I like to keep my poker and my music separate..
    * Another leak is when I'm pot committed I can't seem to find a fold. I'll take the gamble because of the odds. (this has cost my one or two good sized victories I reckon)

There are a few more leaks but I'll keep these ones to myself for now..:-)

I found that I used to check call alot, an awful lot. I worked hard on getting the calling station hat removed, but every now and then it lurks it's ugly head.

I also find the middle part of tournaments difficult, I feel that I get involved in to many races at this stage of tournaments, or else I have a cunning plan that goes horribly wrong.

I find listening to my ipod helps me concentrate more on the game, rather than chit chat with anyone who will listen to me.........

My biggest leak is that I am a bad player.

    tilt, not close

I'm in a similar situation to the OP (albeit online rather than what appears to be live play in the OP). I have been very tempted to ask for some advice here but there seems to be a sea-change over low content here ATM so I held off (although did register with 2+2 to see if a sub forum might be a good place to start). To sum up, having got PT recently I discovered that as I suspected I was being far to tight and passive preflop and although a break even player on FT (and nice ROI on ipoker/tribeca) I have decided that enough is enough and I need to try an plug this leak (i.e move towards TAA, or even sLAA over my TPA right now). Thing is, boards is a great resource for stand alone HH analysis but my leak stems from something other than 'how did I play this' and is more a fundamental starting hand issue (on an aside, I am aware of position and use PT + GT to have an idea of my opponents so the basic answer of 'open your starting hand requirements in later positions' is perhaps overly simplified)

Don't want to hijack OP post ;) so will leave it at that but perhaps if a mod could indicate if a post requesting advice from players who perhaps had similar problems would be suitable I could prepare a thread outlining my particular concerns?

My biggest leak is that my bluffs dont get respected and when I have the goods they always find a fold, in conclusion I think when I play live (and when im not hungover/not giving a damn) I must be a big tell box.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 722 ✭✭✭busted flush

my biggest leak is loosing interest in a game. i find after about 2/3 hours of playing i start to get bored ,go for more cig brakes ,order food , engage in idel chit chat. i should learn to get up and go home when this happens as im usually in good shape by this time. i dont however and i fritter away what ive won:mad:

"izi" from the SE ftw!! and you prmised me Cheesums would be OUR business... screw you and you're KJ!!!!

biggest leak was: limp folding... but think i'm getting rid of that... but sadly i have replaced it with..
biggest leak is: giving my opponent credit for the ability to find a fold...

well lloyd you know how i am more a stay in the shadow and lurk kinda guy. Some people call it stalking including Sergant fitzpatrick of pearse street garda station but i figure knowing were dealers live and what kinda background they have is an important aspect of getting every piece of information necessary to help my poker game. I dont want to lose because i didnt know it was the dealers birthday and my tip size did not take it into account forcing her to deal The chief aces to teach my cheese loving Axx a lesson.

On a more serious note any ideas how to overcome that betting problem i have?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

anto... you fear the reaper.. in this case tournament life syndrome... even take last friday you were on the starting stack during the 8th level trying to limp into the money. you check when u think ur ahead/call "just in case" you're beat. be freddy deeb... bet when you're ahead, if your hand improves on the turn or river, bet more... if you think you're ahead.. BET...

say you play 10 €50 games, and in each of them you BET BET BET when you think you;re ahead... 7-8 times you'll get it right i figure (for some reason im gonna give you credit for knowing whats going on) and 2-3 times you'll go busto. the 7-8 times you bet and win your stack will be big enough for u to do damage in a tourney, the 2-3 times u get it wrong u'll be out the door early. might as well go bust in the first level if you;re gonna blind to be the bubble... SHIP IT IN!!!

    PS:
roland de wolfe > freddy deeb

EDIT: you'll experience a higher varience... trust me! but its fun.. and it makes lloyd giggle like a school girl!

    folding AA preflop.

Just one thing, you realise it's not a leak to call if you are pot committed. It's a leak to fold when you are pot committed. The possible leak is getting into situations when you have pot committed yourself with marginal holdings, just trying to be helpful.

Some of my biggest leaks are tilt, not playing enough, boredom and making too many "Hero" calls with TPTK and Over pairs when I have a good feeling I'm beaten.

My leaks include but are not limited to the following:

Playing hands blind [not a good idea], tilt, roulette , Chinese poker, Blackjack, the white choclate game, pitch and toss.

In seriousness i get bored in tournies very easily and do very silly things and i steam quiet a lot

Not being able to make the right call between instinct and logic a lot of the time.
    Example.
A few people call my bb and i check with A9.
flop comes 972, I bet 50, a call, and an all-in for 350, I can't put the limper that went all-in on a hand that beats me in his limping range, as I have only seen him play connectors or high Aces. My logic tells me he couldn't have a hand that could beat me, after playing with him for so long, my instinct says he knows how I play and would only go all-in with a hand that is beating me, I call and he turns over 97, bust.

Also, sometimes I am so intent on te other play and putting him on a hand that I bet out of turn by accident and it causes me the hand.

    .

I agree with you...it's on me word doc. Also what I mean here is you pot comitted yourself via overaggression eg semi bluff, and get called, you then committ yourself on the river as you have too much in the middle.

You are correcti n your paragraph. It's all related and is a big leak...(got the hammer out)

    leaks -

not concentrating on opponents play when im not in a hand.

when i've a very tight decision to make for alot of my stack, i tend to ignore my instincts and do what the book says.

when i tilt i'm convinced everyone is bluffing me

my bankroll management sucks - being worked on as no.1 priority

edit - also playing drunk, hungover or tired.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭jbravado

Playing drunk-house games-taxis-and of course tilt.
The ability to limit yourself to a small losing session is pretty underrated imo.
I also play too many hands up front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

mt biggest leak is bankroll management mainly due to horses and football betting. I lost a good % of my online roll on the setanta cup final.

another leak is trying to make people fold that havent got the abilty to do so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,533 ✭✭✭ollyk1

    In poker tournies

Not being nearly as good as I'd like to be

    Not concentrating enough

Being nice to people and having a good time

Too aggressive at times, other times too passive

    Being a tell box

    In cash games

Not being nearly as good as I'd like to be

    Not concentrating enough

Being nice to people and having a good time

3 betting with 7-2o and the like a bit too often

Wanting to make moves against the better players all the time

Slowly turning into a station and bleeding away money as the night wears on and I'm in the hole....

    Being a tell box

    In life in general

Being a bit too cautious with investments. Basically verging on paralysis by analysis in respect of investments and work....

Not living in the moment enough

Being a bit of a tight arse

So when do we get the solution to solve all our problems?? ;)

Oh yeah one of my faults as opposed to leaks is sometimes I am overcome with the urge to 'fun punch' the guy who has read the super duper series of No Sht Jack holdem poker by Doyle Brunson , just when you have been dogged in a 70/30 pot....eh I would have just called preflop and re-assessed, why commit yerself with KK when a A could easily hit on the flop...BOP....FUN PUNCH....tilt gone....I never do it but the urge overcomes me and so instead I curse at pedestrians...(are there no workhouses)

So your problem is you are too nice....Hmmm. The film scrooged comes to mind. ( with Bill Murray)

You dress too casually in the Fitz and too formally in the SE. If you reverse this you will get more respect preflop.

I'm not kidding. Not winning all the money that you can win is a leak. We've all eased up at times or not cared enough. The only one who cares enough is Lloyd and he gets lambasted for it.

I don't ever want respect preflop! I dress informally in both places you just caught me on a very rare occasion in a suit in the SE I believe. :p It has happened once or twice in the Fitz on occasion too (I believe DocFarrell posted a picture from the SSF game).

How come every thread leads to Lloyd. You've just opened the door and now the haters will come with mops and whistles .
Oh yeah him, that lucksack, then lloyd will get upset, I'll get upset , the mods will get upset and BCB will just laugh at us all crying, like the bully that he is. Let's not speak of him no more. (He is nice though and almost pert)

It's the Six degrees of LLoyd game (like the six degress of Kevin Bacon game).

In 6 links or less, you can always get to LLoyd.

My leaks are very similiar to Olly methinks, apart from the urge to 3 bet 'teh hammer', I eliminated that a while back, unless I am playing Olly for some reason???

In my Omaha game I think I am not aggressive enough. I have almost certainly improved recently, but considering the low base I was starting from that probably isn't much of a boast.
